Gaga brouhaha proves that ‘hard-line groups’ run this country: Muslim scholar
    Wed, 05/16/2012

The US pop diva Lady Gaga’s scheduled concert fiasco proves that certain hard-line groups have been successfully pushing local authorities to meet their demands, indirectly controlling the nation, a Muslim scholar says.

Rector of the Syarif Hidayatullah Islamic State University Komaruddin Hidayat told The Jakarta Post that certain groups within society had successfully influenced the government to intervene against Indonesian’s freedom of expression, adding that authorities should have protected it.

“This is a setback and a pathetic situation in which we find the public sphere where Indonesians should be able to express themselves without restraint in fact faces intervention from one community that has become a powerful force in this nation,” he said Wednesday morning.

He added that while hard-liner groups had pressured the authorities, several members of the government apparently had relented to their demands, saying that it was a “politically correct” move to do.

“This situation proves that there are fraudulent officials that have been using the hard-liner groups to further their own political interests,” he said.

Komaruddin was responding to the National Police’s refusal to issue permits to Lady Gaga’s Jakarta concert.

The Police claimed that the eccentric singer “does not resemble the country’s local culture.”

Lady Gaga is slated to perform at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta on June 3.

The singer, known for her pop songs such as “Poker Face” and “Bad Romance”, has sparked strong opposition from groups such as the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), Islam Defenders Front (FPI), United Development Party (PPP) and the Islamic People’s Forum (FUI).

MUI and FUI sent a letter to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono requesting him to consider rejecting the concert’s permit.

In 2007, American R&B diva Beyonce was scheduled to perform in Malaysia, a predominantly Muslim country, but the concert was cancelled because the sexy songster refused to abide by the nation’s so-called “decent” dress-code for women.

The Kuala Lumpur concert’s cancellation turned out to be Jakarta’s gain, because the diva decided to stop in the capital of the biggest Southeast Asian economy instead.

In 2012, however, it was Indonesia’s law enforcement agencies that denied issuing a permit for Gaga’s concert in Jakarta.

Komaruddin refused to comment on the changing situation but affirmed that the hard-liner groups were better off “fighting corruption practices” than disrupting Indonesians’ freedom of expression.

Filipino Christians want Gaga to cancel
    Friday, May 18, 2012

Christian youths in the Philippines have chanted 'Stop the Lady Gaga concerts' at a protest rally.

About 70 Christian youths in the Philippines have chanted 'Stop the Lady Gaga concerts' at a rally calling for the singer's shows in Manila next week to be cancelled.

Members of a group called Biblemode Youth Philippines said on Friday that they are offended by Lady Gaga's music and videos - in particular her song Judas, which they say mocks Jesus Christ.

Protest leader and former Philippine congressman Ben Abante says his group plans to file a case against Lady Gaga and concert organisers if she sings Judas at her Manila gigs on Monday and Tuesday.

Former Manila mayor Jose Atienza says the singer and organisers can be punished for offending race or religion.

Lady Gaga scrapped a concert in Indonesia following protests there by conservative Muslims.

Philippine rally demands Lady Gaga ban

    • From: AFP
    • May 19, 2012 8:31PM

HUNDREDS of protesters marched in the Philippine capital today to demand a ban on pop phenomenon Lady Gaga's upcoming concerts, claiming her lyrics were anti-Christian.

About 50 riot police blocked a major Manila intersection to stop the marchers from reaching the shopping mall complex where the American singer is due to perform on May 21-22.
Lady Gaga has already faced opposition elsewhere on the Asia leg of her tour, including in Indonesia where police denied her show a permit amid threats from Islamic hardliners.
The Philippines is a deeply-religious Catholic majority country and many of the demonstrators were from the group Biblemode International, whose founder said Lady Gaga's lyrics were blasphemous.
Baptist preacher Benny Abante, a former member of the Philippine parliament said the song "Judas" mocked Jesus Christ.

Simple solution. Change the song name to Budas for the P.I., Jewdas for Indonesia, and Screwdis for Thailand.

Lady Gaga arrives in Philippines amid protests

POP singer Lady Gaga arrived in the Philippines on Saturday to cheers from fans and protests from young Christians calling for the cancellation of her upcoming concerts.

About 200 Christian young people marched in Manila for a second straight day, holding placards urging the singer to “respect our faith, stop the blasphemy.”

The Biblemode Youth Philippines members plan to hold a vigil starting Sunday near the concert venue. They said they are offended by Lady Gaga’s music, particularly her song “Judas,” which they said mocks Jesus Christ.

But throngs of shrieking, camera-toting fans mobbed her, seeking her autograph as she walked into her hotel surrounded by bodyguards. She arrived in Manila late Saturday on a private jet.

Authorities in the conservative, majority Roman Catholic country approved the concerts, set for Monday and Tuesday, but said they won’t allow nudity or lewd acts.

Sold-out crowds and angry protests have followed Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” Asian tour.

Fans younger than 18 were banned from concerts in South Korea over complaints her lyrics and costumes were too provocative, and she was denied a concert permit in Indonesia by police under pressure from Islamic hard-liners.

Riot police stopped Saturday’s marchers about a kilometer (half a mile) away from the concert venue. Phalanxes of security guards stood on alert in front of the arena.

“She declared a distorted view toward Jesus Christ and for us Biblical Christians it is offensive,” said Ruben Abante, a protest leader. “Her music and everything about her is different from what our values are.”

Organizers from Ovation Productions said they respect the beliefs of critics but promised that the performances “will not pose a threat to their sense of morality and conduct.”

Under Philippine law, people who offend race or religion can be sentenced to up to six years in prison, although no one has been convicted recently.

Lawmaker demands police explanation over Gaga rejection
    Mon, 05/21/2012

House lawmaker Benny K. Harman from Commission III overseeing legal affairs and law demanded on Monday that the National Police provide the public an explanation as to why it decided to reject Lady Gaga’s permit for her planned June 3 concert at Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Central Jakarta.

Benny asserted that Gaga’s concert didn't have to be cancelled.
“[Her music] is a form of cultural expression. Why prohibit it? She has the right to freedom of expression,” Benny said on Monday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

Benny, a Democratic Party member, said that the National Police, which rejected Gaga’s permit last week after the Jakarta Police recommended it not be issued, should not discriminate in issuing permits for foreign artists to perform in Indonesia.

“Since [her performance] was prohibited, we want the National Police to provide their reasoning as to why they turned her down,” Benny said.
The National Police originally said that they would follow the Jakarta Police’s position on Gaga.
However, on Monday, it seemed the National Police would reconsider their original decision after they met with representatives from Big Daddy Entertainment, Gaga’s local concert promoter, saying that they would announce their “final decision this week”.

Over 50,000 tickets have been sold for Gaga’s concert, 12,000 of which were purchased by foreigners in places such as Australia and the Philippines.thejakartapost.com

Actually, I know the promoter, everyone will get their money back. Though last year a less than reputable promoter sold 50,000 or so tickets to a non existent Motley Crue concert, and when it was discovered to be a non event they happily refunded all the money, minus a 15% 'admin' fee, thus keeping it all legal despite the fact they never had any intention of holding the event.

Lady Gaga's Jakarta concert cancelled, promoters reveal
    May 27, 2012

Jakarta - A concert by US pop star Lady Gaga in Indonesia has been cancelled following protests by hardline Islamic groups, the show's promoters said Sunday.

"We would like to announce regretfully that Lady Gaga’s concert for June 3 cannot be held," Minola Sebayang, spokesman for concert promoter Big Daddy Entertainment, said.

Indonesian police earlier this month refused to issue a permit for the concert, citing objections from some Muslim groups who deemed Gaga’s stage show to be "pornographic" and incompatible with local culture.

The Islamic Defenders’ Front, a small group known for sometimes violent protests, has threatened to mobilize to block the show.

Sebayang said the cancellation was prompted by the controversy.

"Lady Gaga is very concerned and respects the people of Indonesia so she doesn’t want anyone to get hurt or fall victim in her show," hesaid.

About 50,000 tickets had been sold for the Jakarta concert at the Bung Karno stadium. The promoter said tickets would be refunded.

Gaga, whose real name is Stefani Germanotta, is known for her eccentric and risque outfits in videos and on stage.

Religious groups in South Korea, the Philippines and Indonesia protested against the concerts on her Born This Way Ball tour.

The shows in Seoul and Manila went ahead as scheduled.

The announcement in Jakarta came after Indonesian Security Minister Djoko Suyanto waded into the controversy last weekend and called for a compromise so that the concert could go ahead.

I object to the word 'sometimes'... violence is what they do, all the time. These are the blokes that smash restaurants and McDonlads during Ramadan, injure karaoke singers, kill and stab Christians and smashed in the heads of several Muslims because they are the wrong sort.

Lady Gaga Cancellation a Shock to Fans, 'Good News' Says FPI

After the announcement that pop diva Lady Gaga's Jakarta concert was off, thousands of her fans, who call themselves "little monsters," sent a flurry of Twitter messages to persuade her to go ahead with the concert.

The singer cancelled her June 3 concert early on Sunday, with promoters saying the security threat was too serious after Islamic hardliners promised "chaos" if she entered the Muslim nation.

The promoters had indicated that a deal was being hammered out to tone down the concert, but the US star's management had stood firm, vowing there would be no compromise to appease religious conservatives.

"Lady Gaga's management has considered the situation minute to minute, and with threats if the concert goes ahead, Lady Gaga's side is calling off the concert," Minola Sebayang, lawyer for promoters Big Daddy, told reporters. "This is not only about Lady Gaga's security, but extends to those who will be watching her."

The flamboyant performer, who has nearly 25 million followers on Twitter — the highest number on the social networking site — wrote just hours before the announcement was made: "There is nothing Holy about hatred."

Earlier this month Jakarta police refused approval for the show after the Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) threatened violence if Lady Gaga performed, calling her a "devil's messenger" who wears only a "bra and panties".

Big Daddy president director Michael Rusli said it was "unfortunate" that the show, part of Lady Gaga's tour of Asia that drew protests from Christian groups in the Philippines and South Korea, had to be called off.

"For the past few days we have communicated with the government and Lady Gaga's side. The government has given support, but this is not about the permit," he said. "The cancellation is really due to concerns over security."

More than 50,000 tickets had been sold for the event at the Bung Karno Stadium, but FPI Jakarta chairman Habib Salim Alatas said the cancellation was "good news" for Muslims in Indonesia.

"FPI is grateful that she has decided not to come. Indonesians will be protected from sin brought about by this Mother Monster, the destroyer of morals," he told AFP.

"Lady Gaga fans, stop complaining. Repent and stop worshipping the devil. Do you want your lives taken away by God as infidels?"

The FPI has about seven million followers and has been known to raid pubs and clubs.

Lady Gaga is scheduled to play three shows in Singapore this week. She was due to play in Jakarta after that, before flying to New Zealand and Australia, and then to Europe on her "Born This Way Ball" tour.

Indonesian fans had suggested that Big Daddy look for another venue outside the capital after Jakarta police refused to give approval, but Rusli said "this is a huge concert so it can't be moved elsewhere".

"Nowhere else in Indonesia can accommodate that many people", he said, insisting that the 26-year-old singer was "prepared to adapt to Asian culture".

The star's manager Troy Carter said in Singapore on Thursday that Lady Gaga would not tone down her concerts.

Disappointed student Agus Murdadi, 17, said he had been waiting for months to see his idol.

"I'm shocked. She's creative, not provocative. I bought a ticket because I want to see her dancing and singing Judas in front of me," he told AFP. "I'm going to tweet to her to tell her that she should just come and not worry. The police can take care of FPI. I hate the FPI."

Another fan, Muh Fadli Firdaus, tweeted on @FadliGermanotta: "Sorry for everything, we still love you."

I was drinking with some Emiratis on Walking Street one Ramadhan when some white-robed locals (well more likely Malaysians the way they looked) came wandering around badgering anyone who looked as if they might come from a Muslim country to go to the local mosque.

The lad I was drinking with, who had a penchant for vodka, made it quite clear that his relationship with Allah was his and his alone to decide, and that they might wish to consider their interest in copulation and travel instead.

    Most amusing.

Last ditch bid by Bali to get the Lady to perform there.

Governor Pastika, several local MPs and community leaders have sent a message to the promoter that, subject to the police guaranteeing the safety of concert goers, the Lady would be most welcome.

Venue is likely to be GWK cultural park, host to Iron Maiden last year. (Great concert I hear)

The locals are gagging for the lady and to stick it to the Muslim fanatics at the same time just makes it sweeter apparently.

It would make a welcome change to that awful House music they drunkenly play at 150dB from ramshackle speakers at New Year.
