Visa for wifey to work in the UK

Im considering going back to the UK as Thailand is shite . All being well I should be taking the wife as well. Rather than let her sit around getting fat I'd like to see her pull her weight and get a job.
What visa's can you apply for that would allow her to work while we're there?

Many years since I did this but when I got a settlement visa for my wife she was not allowed to work.
Permission to work came later when she was granted her ILR.

Laws may have changed so check first

Oh dear, here we go. So there no other way than to get a settlement visa? I was only planning for a year there, 2 maximum.

Maximum stay with any other visa is 6 months, so settlement visa is best even for a year.

As said above. Settlement is your only choice Melv.
£700 might sound a lot, but that will be paid back in less than a month, if your wife is working.

Depending on what she does, plenty of jobs pay cash-in-hand.

Its the length of time that we could be there thats going to be the issue it seems, no good going on a tourist visa for 6 months doing cash in hand work when we might be there a year or 2.

Then I believe that she can get a National Insurance number just by asking for one.

The tax office don't care if you're illegal or not as long as you pay taxes.

    I read it somewhere.

    ^ Me

    Checklist looks about right.

Pretty much anything you have to prove proof of relationship, finances, accomodation

How long does it take from start to finish? I might end up going back and leaving her to do it if its a while.

Depends if she is deemed to need an interview, by the little hitlers in the embassy. Waiting times can vary, but i guess the average is about six weeks. I suppose if youve been married quite some time, then it could be much quicker. Maybe done and dusted in a week.

    Yes.

Proof of money and accommodation are the main two. Stick some photos of wedding etc... just in case.

I went to England with my son first and they sorted it in a week.

If you follow the link to T-UK posted above, on the visa sub-forum there are a load of sticky's that tell you in detail how to put a folder together. Worked for me. When applying for a NiNo for the wife, its best to have some evidence that she has been looking for work, responses to job applications, rejection letters, that sort of thing. Things really have tightened up.

Edit: I should point out that by law, your missus is entitled to a NiNo, but somehow that message hasn't filtered down to the DWP clerks!

National insurance number is as easy as calling up, getting the form sent, completing it and sending the marriage and visa evidence

    Nothing more complicated than that.

Accomodation wise for a start we would be at my parents house, as for cash if I had bucketloads I wouldn't be going there in the first place. My fathers quite happy to act as sponsor and provide evidence of funds.

Just wanted to say good luck to you if you're definetely going back Melvbot. i understand the 'Thailand is shite' comment even if it was a bit tongue in cheek, but England's grim too. Alright for a visit, but going back permanently might just remind you of why you left. I was back there last month, and after a week couldn't wait to come back here.
Don't want to put a spanner in your plans but these are my thoughts, and if your reasoning is purely financial, I do understand.

On the positive front your kids will speak English well within 6 months, so I hear. Nick might elaborate on that. cheers

Then your folks write you a formal and informal letter of invitation to stay. Also get them to include a copy of the deeds or land register. Some photos of the house and so on.

The money required is somewhere arou 10,720 quid for the two year visa now. or an equivalant to this amount.

From what I gather that is what two years worth of Jobs Seekers looks like.

We were back there 2 or so years ago and with the wife and 1 kid at the time it was quite enjoyable, if I were going alone I'd agree with the shite part. Its not a definite plan or a forever thing, 2 years or so if we do go back. Im quite happy anywhere as long as the kids and mrs are OK.

You can be sponsored for accommodation, include all the stuff squirrel put.

You cannot be sponsored financially, you need to show money or a job offer in your name.
