    Overstaying on a tourist Visa

My family and I will be in Thailand for about a month in August.

Theris a strong possibility that we may over stay our 30 day tourist visa (myself and my 20 month and 2 month olds) by a few days.

Will it be a problem or do we just pay a fine at the airport? How much is the fine?

How hard if we decide to stay another week or so is it for us to get a visa extension? Can I go by myself to immi or do I have to take my kids as well?
News is what someone, somewhere is trying to suppress - everything else is just advertising.

500 baht per day per person, counter at airport.

but if u get picked up before then (routine traffic check etc) could mean time in da slammer....

    500 baht a day x 3 people = 1,500 per day = ouch.

I wonder if that would throw a 2 month old in the slammer for overstaying?

Just pop across the nearest border, make a day trip of it, and get a new 30 day entrance stamp when you come back in. KW's right - if you get picked up with an expired visa they'll stick you in the pokey until everything's sorted out. (yes, they would put a 2 month old in the slammer until daddy pays up ). Don't bother with immi, just head to Cambodia, Burma, or Malaysia briefly.

    Don't do it!
If you have any kind of traffic accident, or, anything at all involving the authorities, you will be classed as an illegal immigrant. You will have to pay all expences for accidents, then you will be thrown into IDC for a minimum of three weeks before being deported.

    *gulp*

Zorin says that kids under 2 are exempt which makes me think that at only 500 baht a day I would be sweet but then Sir Burr put the wind up me big time!

Okay so looks like it isn't worth it at all.

Nearing the end of our stay I should only be about a 2 hour drive away from the Chong Mek border in Ubon Ratchatani.

Would I be able get an extension at that border? If so, will I need to take my kids with me as well?

^means a 60 day visa as opposed to the 30 day visa exemption you get on arrival.

Dr Bob, thanks for explaining that.

I assume you'd have to get it at your nearest outback Thai consulate.

You can also extend the 60 day tourist visa for another 30 days giving you a total of 90 days. Visas must be obtained outside of Thailand.

better, ask for one week extenstion from the Immigration. Go alone, don't involve the kids, and when you leave, they might or might not fine your kids, but if exempt, problem solved.

    Thanks for all the help.

If I can find out if Chong Mek can do it then i might just leave it at that as I will not be sure if we need to overstay until close to the end of the trip.

If not then I guess it will be easiest to send our passports and money to the thai embassy in Perth.

Anyone every gone through chong mek?

Nope,if you extend, then all is ok as long as you don't overstay the extension.Personally.I would have thought that shagging around in BKK for an extension would be a pain in the arse.Plus I think they carge THB1700 each???

Getting your visa by post in Oz, seems easier to me.

Getting a visa by post is easypeasy.(google up your local consulate and follow instructions) Best to avoid overstay issues if possible.

I guess your missus has a Thai passport and your children are registered in it since they don't have their own.
So it's basically only you that can come in question for overstay.
As someone else mentioned, get a 7 day extension from an immigration office at the last day of your 30.
1900 Baht and you'll be sorted.

^Get the kids a Thai passport, it'll only cost 1,000 baht and lasts 5 years.
