US Passport for My Son and Visa for His Mother

I will be making an appointment at the Chiang Mai US consulate to see about obtaining a US passport for my son. Besides all the paperwork, the Consulate may want my son and I to take a DNA test to prove that I am his natural father. Does anyone know where I can have a DNA test done in Chiang Mai? I prefer to do the mouth swab rather than blood test, if possible. I know I can have it done in Bangkok, but prefer not to make that trip. Any help would be appreciated.

I will also be looking into a visa for his mother who is a Thai national. My name is on my son's birth certificate, as is his mother's. His mother and I have been legally married in Thailand and I believe it was already registered with the US Consulate. Any information on this process would also be appreciated. I know I can go on the internet and look, but it is always good to hear from individuals who have already gone through this, or a similar process.

I emailed the US Consulate in Chiang Mai and they were very quick with this response:

"A DNA test is not always required. You should make your appointment to come in for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and passport for your son. Be sure to prepare all the documents in advance. We suggest you also bring with you photos, and other information that establishes your relationship to your son.

We will let you know at the time whether a DNA test is requested, and if so, will give you all the information you need at that time.

We hope this answers your questions. But again, take this a step at a time, and make your appointment for the CRBA and passport first."

If so as I imagine you have , I,m sure because of past history it will be a stroll in the park .

Sorry I cant help you as I have only been through all the UK hoops + hurdles with my wife , and I know what a bloody rigmarole that lot was !

Actually Nige, I have never gone thru the process to obtain a visa for my wife. All I heard was negatives because of our age difference and she really had no desire to come to the US. She has changed a little since we had our son and says she would like him to go to school in the States. I told her to look before she decides, so now she wants to come for a visit.

I would think obtaining a passport for my son should not be too complicated. Once he has one, obtaining a visa for her, since she is the mother of a US citizen, should be much easier.

I will go thru the process that seems reasonable compared to some of the hoops I have jumped thru to get a Thai visa in the past.

I thought all visa's/passports are done online these days, with no need to apply at the consulate?

I think you have to prove that a child qualifies to obtain a US passport the first time and that may include a DNA test. Take a look at the Consulate website. If you see I can do this all online, let me know.

Correct. Lot's of paperwork for you to bring to appointment. Make sure you have it all. If you have all the paperwork and your son "appears" to be your son should be no need for DNA test. If one required will be via saliva swab.

Once all is done, you will receive a Consular Report of Birth Abroad of a Citizen of the United States of America (CRBA) with passport soon to follow. The CRBA can be used at any US Embassy to prove your son is a US citizen.
