AP, always buy US dollars on the Thai side and pay the Visa for Lao in US, comes to less than 1,000 Baht.
You have a lot to lean grasshopper, but you will lean, just as I did. Jim
Very risky going to a border to exit when on overstay. If the border patrol nabs you before you get to the immigration then you're done for.
What's the border patrol, new one on me. Have police, Border soldiers and immigration police, same guys that you face at immigration on the border.
You are not going to do life in prison for a few days overstay, if you were they would arrest you at the border, instead of the 500 Baht fine. Jim
At lot of border crossing areas (ie.Mae Sot, Aranyaprathet, Ranong, Nong Khai etc.) have nearby border patrol checkpoints. Usually they're placed 10-15kms outside of the towns on the main routes into/from the town.
The only time I've had my passport checked by Border police is when I've gone by bus. Sometimes they just glance at it but occasionally they will flip through it looking for my exit stamp. They're mostly looking for Burmese, Cambos, Loatians etc., without or elapsed permits. no IDs etc.
Getting nabbed by the border police or any police official anywhere for that matter, BEFORE you reach an exiting point while on overstay, then you've got a serious problem on your hands. You can't pay them your overstay fine because they're not immigration officials, nor will they let you go, regardless of how near you are to the land crossing, because they don't know for 100% sure, if you'll actually make it there.
They'll have done their job and caught someone without a valid travel permit, visa, document or whatever whilst in Thailand.
Gaza, I live on the Lao / Cambodia land border, Emerald Triangle. We have road blocks, Border army, Forestry Police, Local Police and Royal Thai Immigration Police, never seen or heard of border police.
In 11 years I have never been asked for my passport, luckily as I never carry it, only ever needed to show my drivers license.
Never heard of anyone being arrested for a few days overstay, if anyone has or heard of a farang driving, being arrested for not carrying their passport, I'd like to know. Jim
Jim, I think Gaza is right. I ve spent quit some time in Nong Khai. They have frequent roadblocks a few km's outside NK on the motorway to and from Udon. Although my impression is that they are more after illegal Lao immigrants, coz usually they didnt pay much attention to me nor my passport.
But it must be said, in all my years in TH, I have been stopped maybe 15 times on roadblocks, the majority of that just outside NK.
Having said that, its also true that I know no one firsthand who has been arrested for not carrying their passport. But thats maybe I chose my friends careful

just did as long road trip from Mae Sot all the way along the Burmese border up to Fang and over to Chiang Khong,
went thru like 10 Border Patrol checkpoints, except for one was just waved thru.
BUT in the middle of nowhere we were stopped, As my Camboidan GF was with me ( she has a 1 year multi B visa) it took about 30 minutes an numerous phone calls for them to let us go. No idea why or if they were just bored> they were friendly but......if her passport had not been on order......
James; Border patrol=border Police (to some)?
May be different there, but I'm within walking distance of Lao [land border] we have illegal logging, drug smuggling, poachers. Police won't even come in here with out army back up and the main road has road blocks everyday, have to drive through one, when I take the kids to school. Even got stopped a few months ago by the Agriculture police, if you can believe it, some bird flue scare. Yet in all these years I have never been asked for my passport, could be that there are so few farangs out here the cops don't know what to do, if they bump into one. Jim
When I ve been stopped going through check points close to the border, They just looked at the passport photo and me and that was it.
You must be very lucky mate ,, I have only ever been a visitor to Thailand ( 14 times ) and I have been stopped more times than you.Originally Posted by Warrior
BTW been asked for my passport 3 times Int D licence every time ,, every time I offer up my passport behind my licence and nearly always except 3 times it was waved away, not interested.
Just as a point of interest the most times I got stopped was on the road 105 from Tak to Mae sot 4 times going and 5 times coming back. Nightmare of a road 4 shot dead behind us to .
I'm proud of my 38" waist , also proud I have never done drugs
If it is a police roadblock they will check all who pass through it.
I have never carried my passport and for quite some time in Nong Khai only had a U.K license which was always excepted.
I would agree with you that in that area they are mainly looking for Lao illegals and drug runners.
Yes, I reckognize that - they spend just a second looking at the passport, no way they can check the dates and possible overstay
I am a lucky man... or I just look innocent.
Wait... Can't be, coz you seem a lucky man too, and innocent as well.
In the early 90's I shared a townhouse with a guy who, 'long story cut short' was on overstay and got into a fracas with a BG on Patpong. He was arrested and held at Bang Rak police station for a couple of days before being transferred to the IDC. I only saw him briefly after he was released when he was grabbing his belongings from the house and was heading for Malaysia. He said he'll be staying somewhere else on his return. I never saw him again.Originally Posted by jamescollister
The only other account is from what I only read about, it was about 6-7 years ago in a news thread on here or Thai Visa about 8 guys getting caught on overstay when their Phuket to Ranong Visa Run minivan got pulled-up. This was a time when VOA's allowed 28 days stay and I assumed at the time that the guys were gambling on the 'one day grace' allowance on overstaying. What happened to them? I don't know. As with many news items on events here we often don't get to read about any outcomes after the original story is released.
Oh, and there was recently one guy in Phuket (news item on here a few weeks ago) that got paid a visit at his hotel by the immi's when they used their main computer to print-out all the overstayers in Phuket. But he was overstaying by months I think. I honestly don't know if there's a difference in penalties as to the lengths of overstay if you get caught. But, if I was on any length of overstay then I wouldn't want to risk it leaving at a border crossing.
OK, getting caught without a passport is different to getting caught with a passport with an expired visa or stamp. I've been stopped numerous times touring around Thailand (75 out 77 provinces) and mostly riding around the outskirts of this country by M/C and I've never had any problem just showing a licence as a form of ID. But more often than not I'm just waved through at checkpoints.
Only when I travel by bus (in particular Tak -Mae Sot) do I asked to show my PP. Most times they only glance at the PP that I hold out to them showing the photo page, but sometimes they take it and check for my exit stamp. Sometimes I think the official just wants to practice his limited use of the English language because they always ask where I'm going "You go Mae Sot?" "You go for make visa?" or "You go for make chop-chop?".
But, getting arrested for not having a passport? I've personally never heard or read of anyone, but then again, it's not a big deal and probably not newsworthy enough to make the papers or forums, except only to those who get caught that is. Same as individuals who get caught on overstay, no big deal, IDC are supposedly full of them.
When I'm on a bike, I carry my licence. When I'm doing a visa run I carry my passport. Any other time around my locale... nothing.
Gazza. think we are pretty safe then, cops just like photo ID, makes like they know what they are doing. I or none of my friends who live out here ever carry passports, Check in to a hotel show a Thai drivers license, get stopped by the cops, no matter which cops, have a picture ID and they are happy.
Overstay is a fine, don't know when overstay becomes being illegally in Thailand, but you have to front a Judge and don't think he would authorize detention if you can pay the fine and leave the country.
Never had a problem and anyone that has, there is probably more to the story. Jim
