Two teachers killed, set ablaze in Thailand's Muslim south

YALA - Suspected Islamic militants shot dead two Buddhist teachers and then set their bodies ablaze early Friday near a school in Thailand's restive Muslim south, police said.

The charred remains of their bodies were found 100 metres (yards) from the school, near the still-smoldering wreckage of the pickup truck that they were driving when the militants attacked, police said.

One of the victims, Chamnong Koopathanaphong, 59, was the principal of the elementary school in Yala province, police said. The second man, 52-year-old Manoo Sornkaew, was a teacher at the school.

Police said they believed the two were dead before their bodies were set on fire.

The deaths of the teachers followed another killing late Thursday in neighboring Narathiwat province, where a 24-year-old Muslim man who belonged to government's volunteer defence forces was killed in a drive-by shooting.

The region along the Malaysian border was an independent sultanate until it was annexed by mainly Buddhist Thailand in 1902.

    Insurgents kill, burn Buddhist teachers

    (Bangkokpost.com)

Southern violence continues, as two teachers were gunned down by insurgents in Yala while a village defense guard was killed in Narathiwat.

Extremists shot two male teachers in Muang district Friday morning as they were travelling to their school to teach. After shooting the two men, the insurgents dragged their bodies out of the pick-up and set them on fire. As the last act before fleeing, they set fire to the vehicle.

The victims were identified as Amnuay Chuphatpong, director of Ban Ba-doe school, and Manu Suankaew, a teacher at the same school.

Ban Ba-doe school is announced to temporarily close today after the killing of its director and teacher.

In Natathiwat's Sungai Padi district, at least five insurgents shot dead a defence guard as he was returning home from work early Friday.

Police said Por-heam Yakoh, 46, was shot many times in the head and torso. His gun was missing, and was believed to have been taken by the killers.

Por-heam's body was taken to Sungai Padi Hospital for an autopsy.

No eyewitness in killings of Yala teachers

The wife of a teacher who was shot dead and set on fire by suspected militants accused local villagers on Friday of doing nothing while her husband and his colleague were set ablaze.

On Thursday, suspected militants shot dead Chamnong Chupatpong, the director of the Ban Bado elementary school, and a teacher, Manoe Sonkaew, and set their bodies alight on a road just 100 metres away from the village school at which they worked in Yala's Tambon Yupo.

Kawin Chupatpong said the attack on her husband and his colleague had taken place in front of the villagers, who remained inside their homes instead of coming out to help the two victims.

"My husband has been helping them and educating their children for the past decade, and the differences in our religious beliefs was never an obstacle. But this shows that our good deeds were not reciprocated," Kawin said.

"My father and his school helped raised money for the construction of the local mosque, so the children could have a place to pray. He even used his own money," said the couple's daughter Monthida, a senior at Kasetsart University.

Police Major General Phaitoon Choochaiya, commander of the Yala Provincial Police, told reporters yesterday that the absence of eyewitnesses has made his work much more difficult.

He said the brutal attack had sent a chilling message to the entire community, thus the refusal of the villagers to come forward with information.

Yala's deputy governor, Nathaphon Wicheanpert, said the level of brutality was part of a strategy by the militants to test their recruits to see how far they were willing to go.

More than 1,900 people, mostly Muslims of Malay ethnicity, have been killed in the Malayspeaking South since January 2004.

Authorities said a new generation of militants have effectively shattered the fabric of the local community by singling out monks and teachers, along with security officials and their informants.

Somart Suwanthawi, deputy director of Education District One in Yala, described the incident as "unthinkable".

"We have to accept the fact that the villagers are very scared. This has forced them to stay away from these kinds of incidents," Somart said.

Colonel Shinawatra Mandej, commander of Yala's Task Force 1, said security units were looking to come up with a new strategy to better protect teachers.

Chamnong and Manoe were armed with handguns but apparently were no match for the militants.

The murderers are killing their own people and yet the MUSLIM public does nothing to stop the slaughter. I gotta say that at least ONE person was speaking out but then was he a RELIGIOUS leader or a POLICTICAL leader? With this RESPECTED leader being killed, does ANYONE say ANYTHING about who these people are?

NOT a muslim soul knows who any of these vermin are? Got to be something wrong with that way of thinking. They are klilling MOSTLY (by this report) their OWN people, so why don't the muslims themselves stop this? OH MIGHTY ALLAH, GOD or whatever does it take to stop this?

DD, I think if you read the thread and what I was commenting about is the leader down south in THAILAND.

    Muslim leader gunned down

    (Bangkokpost.com from Agencies)

A prominent local Muslim leader known for his tough stance against extremism has been shot dead in Narathiwat, police said Wednesday.

Kawee Prachumkayohmas, 55, was shot four times in an ambush late Tuesday as he left a cemetery where had been praying.

He was the leader of Bacho village in Narathiwat and was known for his strong opposition to the separatist insurgency, which flared up three years ago.

    Funny old world isn't it.

I reckon it's a drug/smuggling/land grab going on, very little to do with separatist autonomy on a patriotic level. Not much pubication of political rhetoric in any press from the "insurgents", but lots of vengeful speach mixed with quasi-religeous babble coming from a mix of imams and gunslingers. Doesn't sound like a cohesive movement to me, especially after the latest Muslim teacher lady getting shot.

Exactly - if it is Muslim insurgents behind all the mayhem down there, how come most of the casualties are Muslim? It is a well-known fact that there is plenty of tension between the army and the police, fuel and drug smuggling is big business in the south, and plenty of parties want in on the action. Add to this the past (and present) discrimination against the ethnic Malay population, add a few religious hot heads and some separatists and the total lack of accountability and respect for justice in the police and armed forces and I think you will have an idea of what goes on in the south. Lot of personal issues probably being settled as well.

Blaming it all on one party is naive and counter-productive. Unfortunately the local press seem disinterested, possibly incompetent, or maybe they have come to the conclusion that it is not in their own interest to dig too deeply into what actually goes on down there.
Any error in tact, fact or spelling is purely due to transmissional errors...

    Whiteshiva,
    Thanks for expanding on that.

If what you indicate is correct, it is entirely possible that the corrupt police/army factions involved in the south are pushing the envelope a little by bombing Bkk or the north "lightly", just making sure that their own more northern relatives are as safe as possible first, by issuing warnings before detonation.
