And one has to note, this thread is somewhat misleadingly titled. Its not a mandatory "thai culture course for foreigners", Its a mandatory thai culture course for foreign teachers" (for a given value of "teacher").

What i find funny and though irreleavnt as my comments are this man has extended to us that he is an idiot!!!!!!!!

He has shown us in great detail, that through his apparent time and effort, and living here for 5 years he cant really speak or read thai and thus proves he's moaning about spending his own money.....boohoo!

In the uk british people want non british lving there to learn about culture and speak english as im sure most other countries do, why here is it so different?

oh yes because everyone moans about insignificant things to do with hoe terrible it is here but still stay here because they know its better then home, and so frustrate themsleves by expelling theri gasious ramblings on here(maybe like ive just dont now...hmmmmm)!

anyway suck it up and get on with it........youve got a wife and kid and a job, whats wrong?

I did something similar to this back in 2005.

The course lasted 2 days & was free. Dancing was not a part of this course. Representitives from the Ministry of Culture (Ministry of Stupidity) were in attendance.

Everyone who attended this course was issued a little red book. This book highlighted certain "important" facets of Thai Culture. Basically, the book was a complete joke. In my opinion, it was written by a group of "control freaks" who had no understanding of normal human behaviour.

I no longer have the little red book but a friend in BKK does. If I get the chance, I will copy the book & let everybody know how ridiculous it is. Most foreigners laugh their guts out when they read this stupid book.

If this little red book was released in another country, I'm sure it would have a negative effect upon tourism.
Oh for fucks sake! Get a life & stop trying to fuck mine up!

urm yes, but the only difference is they'd do it so they can apply for citizenship, not just to continue doing a mickey mouse job.

I think it's different because most Thais would prefer it if we didn't speak Thai, as that way we're not 'too clever'.

Actually they have to do something like that in Germany.
    Probably isn't that hard.......
Same in Denmark, and yes it is because the test is in Danish so you have to speak/write the language quite well.

I have seen a number of announcements for professor positions in both Europe and South America that require applicants to be able to teach in the local language within three years time. So, while this requirement in Thailand seems stupid, it is mild compared to the requirements of other jobs in other foreign countries.

    Yes/No.

    One of the two.

The Thai admin probably won't get that far with all your visa/WP/TL things anyway. So just give it a 'mai bpen rai', laugh at how retarded they all are, crack open a beer and sit and relax (at a BJ bar)... it's all good son.

Yes, but it is only the 3 day Culture course, I found it made a good intro into Thailand.

The teaching methology was rubbish, but you get few free meals.

When I signed a contract to teach in the San Juan School District, I made and agreement that I would get my CLAD certificate in two years at a cost of $2,400--four classes at $600 each on my own time and with my own money. The semester before I got my tenure they called me in and said I had to do the course or no job. I took the class online (made by a ESL teacher in my school) she got part of the money and got fat, very fat. I got my cert and kept my job...until fall and I left...giving them a middle finger handshake...for a teaching job that paid $20,000 year more.
So, it's not only in Thailand where you have to kiss butt to keep your job and put the money in the big guys pockets. BTW the new District Super will make $240,000yr plus a car to drive (Cad Escalade) and $700 a month pocket money. What does she do? I don't really know.

True, but the training/in-service you complete back home at least has some value, depending on how you can spin the experience to current/potential employers. In other words, the training may have indeed been crap, but you can claim it on your resume and try to spin it to your advantage.

On the other hand, the Thai culture course was complete crap from beginning to end, nothing more than a simple money grab and tragic waste of time.

For me, it felt like the world's longest mugging. The "presenters" could barely keep the smirks off their faces. I felt pretty nuetral and resigned to it going in, but after I felt like "FU Thai people & FU Thailand."
Here's a cultural quiz: ask anyone, any place in the world to say the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Thailand.

I took the 4 x 3 unit course for $1200 American. I took it because there was a gun to my head. Take the course or lose the job. Latest scam here: Fingerprinting. You must get fingerprinted for every school district job you apply for. cost 40 to 60 dollars. The State of California must have at least 15 sets of my fingerprints. They know it's a scam. The DMV has a set of prints from everyone who has a driver's license, only one is really needed.
Q What do you think of Thailand>beautiful place
    A Hookerland in SE Asia.
    B Pickpocket zoo.
Q What do Thais think of Americans? Nut cases.
    A. All rich I am compared to most of them
    B. Fat true obesity is a problem here. But I'm 5'7" and weigh 143 no fat
