The different tiers of international schools

What sort of criteria do people use when working out the different tiers of international school?

Is it solely on the wages paid, the facilities, the amount of time in existence?

I am just trying to work out who the better schools are to aim towards and who to try to use as a stepping stone onto bigger and better things

Accrediation is the key. WES or WASC.

    Mid-level schools will pay B50,000-80,000.

The top schools like MtD mentioned will pay much better.

surely that's the lowest level schools. no int. school would pay less than 50K... surely...

That pay bracket seems to be more the mid to higher level private schools.

I think you'll find there is a blurred line between where the private language schools finish and the international schools start.

Fair nuff. I meant the private school sector that includes the likes of Assumption and the other christian schools etc that pay around that much.

Generally, and this is a guess... the difference is that the Int'l schools teach either the UK or US curriculum, and the privates are still stuck on the Thai one... isn't it? (I could be wrong mind).

Thanks dirtydog but I am not looking for a job in thailand just yet. I am hoping to move in the summer of 2010. i am just lookin to get as much information on the international schools as I can so i know which ones to aim for and which ones to steer clear of. Obviously I have looked on each school website but as we all know websites can be particularly biased so I was asking for more independent advice.

no my BSc is in Computer Studies. My PGCE will give me a post graduate certificate of education to be able to teach ICT. Similar to a person with a history degree teaching history and thus gaining more knowledge about their subject before specialising in the teaching of said subject

Yes, we do know what it is.

I looked on ISB and they start on 137,000. That's quite a nice figure to start with! Now i just need to be that person that is in the right place at the right time!!
Without a B.Ed, or BA without any educational fields... or experience... with just a pgce...

I feel the 'right place and right time' you speak of being in is... in the director's bedroom with a gun pointed at his wife's head. You ain't gonna get a job at a top Int. school with just a PGCE and no experience.

I could be wrong... but I doubt it (KW etc. know a lot more than me on the topic).

With a PGCE I'd hazard a guess that you'd walk into the 70K positions without any trouble, and maybe get lucky with 80-90K.

Sorry to burst your bubble a bit, but simply having a PGCE isn't gonna get you hired (at 137K) when the other applicants have BA's or MA's of Ed.

Which they will, with a few years experience to boot.

You say you've checked out all their websites, don't they have a list of the teachers and their qualifications?

ah but that is the thing. i am not going to come straight out with a PGCE I am going to stay around and get a little bit of experience. Plus i dont realistically expect to get a job in a top school straight off the bat. Like i said in my first post i expect to start at a lower school and work my way up, my comment about getting a job there was more wishing than anything.

Sorry if my previous post outlining my pgce was a bit obvious, i was expecting a whole barrage of abuse stating that I wasn't much better than a tefler as i didnt have a ba in education. you know how it is around these parts for teachers, always on the defensive.

This twat has no idea what he is on about. You need a BA (or BSc) before you can get a PGCE, and a PGCE is the equivalent of a BEd. With a PGCE and a couple of years experience, the world will be your oyster.

Fair enough, well, except for this part (You need a BA (or BSc) before you can get a PGCE)... No shit!

    as I said:

I could be wrong... but I doubt it (KW etc. know a lot more than me on the topic).
I obviously am wrong. I haven't experienced seeing a PGCE being seen as an equivalent to a B.Ed.

I had heard that the Cert of Ed. (PGCE) is seen as that, the certificate that comes before the Dip. of Ed. which comes before the BA of Ed. And is seen accordingly should the other applicants hold a B.Ed.

    Thanks for correcting me.

Like I already stated, Wall Street or similar beckons whatever their teaching / whoring aspirations.

Is this part actually true? The (post grad) Certificate of Education isn't seen as a Certificate of Education...

It's seen as equivalent to a Bachelor of Education.

Really, that's true? I must say I'm slightly surprised.

Or was when I read it. Thanks Smeg.

Yes, it's true. PGCE is a one-year course taken after a Bachelor's; B.Ed is a 4 year degree. I think it'd be closer to the truth to say that they are both seen as routes to getting QTS, along with a couple of other ways - GTP and (when I did my PGCE) some other course that had an acronym beginning with S.
