Why do some people think that "staying on to do a bit of teaching" is hippy-ish?

The amount of scruffy loser looking types I see scribbling into some A5 sized exercise book, making notes in some crappy food court in urban Bangkok who can't even get themselves a decent shirt and never mind getting a necktie, or a pair of decent looking strides, these rich part time hippies can't even ask mummy or daddy to wire them funds to find themselves any shoes to suit the oversized trousers they have found being held around their waist with the shite belt they paid 49 Baht for.

But the more scuffed and scruffy these imbeciles seem to look the more they seem to think they look the part, stating, when asked, that they want to do it for zero profit and want to 'put some good back into the country' by teaching the children and future generation to understand western culture, which is why they have decided to stay around an extra few months "to do a bit of teaching".

Sad oh sad thing is that places like ECC, English First, Siam Computer, Callan Institute, and Nava can't wait to take these folks on nor can the Government schools and from whet I keep on hearing they don't last 3 months into their years contracts and end up going on to China then in most cases, Luang Prubang, to "see those ancient stones".

maybe I should stop making conversations with such people.

I just have a problem with unqualified people and people with no interest in teaching, teaching kids. A teaching degree is a 4 year comitment in the UK not some stupid 6 week course for sex tourists as a way to enable them to stay in Thailand.

Don't tell me "some" foreign teachers (and most local ones by the way) in Thailand do not have the right qualification...

Don't know what Thai schools you deal with, but the ones I know expect the Thai person to have a degree or to be taking a degree course.

I qualified as a teacher back in the late 70s early 80s but never registered as a teacher or worked as one. Instead I joined the BBC and worked as a cameraman ever since.

When I sort of retired here, out of boredom I took on a teaching job in a well known bi-lingual school but to be honest I was shit at it, and gave it up after a few months.

Some of the other teachers at this school were good and they took a lot of time to explain things to the class spent a lot of time in getting the kids to learn.

To my surprise some of these guys were not qualified or did they posses any university degree but they could teach English which I couldn’t.

One guy had been a teacher in Thailand for 11 years, he is happy and enjoying the work. He left school at the age of 16, worked for a printing company before working as a taxi driver.

But sadly it does not really matter if the teacher is qualified or not – Thai children cannot fail in their tests or the school will look bad.

I send my kids to an international school where the teachers are qualified. The cost though is a lot of baht.

Qualification and degree are 2 different matters.
    Especially in Thailand.
And well, it does not apply to foreigners only...

I've worked in the Thai school system. No way would I allow any child of mine to go to a Thai school full stop. The Thai teachers were constantly hitting the children and the two other foreign teachers at my school were only interested in the next excursion to Sukhumvit.

I had the task of checking one of the new teacher's paperwork and it was found he had a fake degree, when I went to the Thai school head she said never mind and to keep the information to myself.

My son went to a Thai school, the teachers hit him, same as they did to me when I went to school as a child, aint nothing wrong with that, he is now enrolled in the Thai Austrian college here in Pattaya and will be 16 at the end of the year, he won second place in the Thai national art competition this year, he is in demand to play in bands at music shows, ie alcazar and stuff like that, yeah I admit Thai education is shite for thick people, but the brighter ones seem to do ok.
How many of you were in college at 15?

Interesting OP. Because I think it's the Lonely Planet that advises them that they can do this no problems and stay on a bit longer.

Which is wrong. That Joe Cummings should bloody well know better than to encourage fake teachers into a system already crawling with scumbags and fakes who stink of booze in the mornings.

I think there is more fake teachers with work permits than qualified.

All these checks they say they are doing are on NEW teachers only who apply for a work permit and teacher's licence, those in the system already just renew their Non-B and licence every year.

I personally know three teachers who cannot leave their jobs because they submitted fake degrees for the work permit years ago. If they change their jobs now, that means new work permits which then means new application and their documents checked.

One of these teachers has been in LOS for nine years and has totally burnt his bridges in his home country. He is royally fxxxed!

Teachers, you get what you pay for.

The the economics lesson is - Pay shit Get shit.

I look at the thread running on Thai Visa and I see some knob head losing his cool, as it is unfair to put someone into a rural school who does not have a degree. Yet the school can't afford a person with a degree. Which bloody qualified Western teacher is going to teach for under $800 a month.

Thailand attracts many of these knob head Westerners who reason with their bloody colons.

The fact that there is an ample supply of whitey willing to work for 30K per month here and teach the lingo is an interesting aspect of Thailand.

My folks are coming back from Phoenix again today after going on their usual spring shopping trip. The oldman has sent back two boxes of shirts because he bought too many.

Sales with stupid things like 80% off plus offering scratch cards to get more money off.

In order to get a full time teaching position in a Thai Uni my wife has to have or get a PHD .
She has 2 university degrees (attained in canada) and did teach part time for a while. We might go back when the New University on Samui opens.

Why would a qualified teacher want to work for such low wages anyways?

I'd like to throw it out there: I just accepted a new teaching postition at an international school. 1 year and 8 months of living in the 'kok and I'm pretty much at the top (for my age / experience range).

I wouldn't be here if I didn't work my ass off though.

But I'll be perfectly honest, despite my qualifications I bet there are some TEFL teachers who are maybe more effective and maybe even smell nicer than me.

But all the same, if you chose to go into a profession, be a goddamn professional and get certified.
