Are long-term "ajarns" in Thailand all arrogant & insane?

On this thread Are you a monkey? - Ajarn Forum - Living and Teaching In Thailand we have a longterm ajarn member venting his frustrations at the way he is treated by Thai men, and says he is leaving Thailand. Now, right or wrong in his opinion, this thread turns into a shit-throwing fight with dickhead mod zehner wading in with the packhunters trying to see this guy off for daring to call thai men monkeys.

The vast majority of farangs never try living abroad, some because they don't feel the need to (happy already hence the idea is never considered) and some because they lack the motivation or guts to try it. Hence only a minority of farangs ever try living abroad. Of this minority, the majority stay abroad only temporarily, for a few months or a year or three and then prefer to head back to their roots, for various reasons. Therefore, it is a minority of a minority of farangs who emigrate permanently. The majority of these go to other developed countries, and only a minority choose somewhere like Thailand to emigrate to. So, long-term farangs in Thailand are a minority of a minority of a minority, and are the type who like being an ethnic minority transcultural (cultural equivalent of a transexual) in a developing country. That is fine per-se, everyone has individual preferences, but when you see people like aging one talking down to the OP in this way is so pathetic.

Numbnuts you said what is quoted there. Nothing is taken out of context. Simply accept that you are a racist and that every person who has read this thread thinks the same thing.
You posted racist comments backing up a guy who couldnt make it here. Keep your mouth shut mate.
Why is it that this minority of a minority of a minority think they are so great, acting in a way that suggests they think their lifestyle is supreme? Understand this transculturals, just because you emigrated to a developing country thus your wealth stands out among your peasant hosts and you can use your developed world eduction to lord it over the locals and create a relative middle-class lifestyle, living in an estate house and employing a maid/nanny, you are highly conceited and delusional if this results in you thinking that you are one of the world's success stories and thus have a right to pontificate to people who don't want to do things your way.

I have noticed that most of this type of people have thailike qualities, either forced or subconciously assimilated, especially a lack of ability to deal with criticism. The funny thing is that they seem to consider that they are now thai, perhaps due to their immigrant status having been mentally overwritten as part of their desperation to be accepted, hence have to protect thai reputation against farangs who criticise Thais.

    End of pontification!

And a smart one at that, having rented out his house in the uk whilst staying here.
Not sure about his op, Thai men are largley irrelavent to me here, limited contact with them and I dont ever remember being stared at by one? anybody else?
Its the first time I've seen anyone state Thai men as a reason for leaving, well other than the ones that suddedly manifest as a bit more than their tilac's "brother"

I'd guess that most of the minority of the minority are attached in some way - a wife, SO - or are trapped here by the lack of future potential in their own countries. The older, retired set, are an entirely different group, who have made a lifestyle choice on their retirement home.

I feel sorry for the older, retired men who have come to Thailand for a 'Thai bride' & have spent most of their retirement savings on the teelak - so much so that they could never consider going back home, since they have little of substance left. Their annual visa renewal seems to be a living hell, in many cases.

As for the majority of Thai men I've come across, they are, imho, the laziest, most deceitful, inept, thick, lying, smarmy SOB's I've ever had the misfortune of coming across.

Most posters (?teachers?) on Shill's forum have very similar traits to those outlined in the paragraph above. In my time in Thailand I really cannot remember coming across a 'teacher' who really impressed me with their credentials.

People become irritable at after too long anywhere; fine, as long as you can continue on. But many men start families in Thailand, and would be capable of returning to their home countries with them, but rarely bother, yet continue bitching.

this does seem to be a recurring theme, is it just the guys we meet that are like that??

i must admit to being pleasantly surprised with meeting Indo guys over here, I now have male and female friends in Indo, something I never really had while living in Thailand.

They're teachers. And by and large, they're English teachers.

Where I come from, that's lower-middle class. Certainly below carpenters and plumbers. Not saying they aren't useful or necessary, but they're just teachers.

Uni professor is a few rungs higher in the West, a few rungs lower here. Will never understand how that works.

^ agree, most English teachers here are scums, or boring twats, or stupid hippies,

Those who retire here, I can respect that.

Yes, Thai are monkeys, but they are nice monkeys so we should be grateful. Are they annoying ? sure they are, and it's frustrating, but we are guests here and it's their country, so we have to live with that.

Never mind Thai men, most farang men are the biggest foking monkeys in this country. Scruffy, alcoholic, dirty old men in the most. "Nana pensioners"

So who are the real monkeys here?

    Hey, I'll wade in.

I'm in my mid 20s. I'm neither rich or poor (closer to rich thank fuck), I spent most of my adult life in other countries ( about 30-ish countries) I first came to Los at 18, I moved out here when I was 19 and lived here for 3 1/2 years, I went back home last year for a while, moved to china for about 6 months than moved back here.

After about my first 3 months of living here it was blindingly obvious that at least 1, if not 2, but probably all 3 are correct:

    Thais are

    a)monkeys
    b)spastics
    C)imbeciles

Nothing has happened in my following 4 years living here to suggest otherwise.

They are primates, it's just another factor which makes living here so much fun.

    Can you clarify b please?

Spastics in what way? How they drive ... dance ... hop around when they hammer their thumb ... eat a spoonful of grubs and fail to notice the 2-inch chili at the bottom of the spoon?

Something that is very clear to me is that just as there is a requirement to have ThB 800,000 deposited with a bank in Thailand in order to obtain a retirement visa, for those who have reached 50, there is also an industry designed to try and relieve these guys of their visa money.

I have met seveeral men who have been the subject of emotional blackmail centred around buying tee-rak a car. Not just any old wreck but something worth, well, at least ThB 800,000. Those poor souls who do buy the car soon find tee-rak no longer loves them and the car sale pays for a house in Isan for the family.

Some teelaks are in for the fast bucks, but the wily ones seem to progressively pluck the golden falang goose over a period of a few years until it moves the vast bulk of its assets over to LOS - most invariably in teelak's name.

By the time the falang goose becomes wise, it is generally too late. They are stuck in the trap. For some of these men fast approaching their geriatric years, it must be a very frightening thought.

I'm certainly no transcultural! I'm happy with the culture I grew up in and will return to, and glad that I've been able to live in another culture. Living abroad is an interesting aspect of life, but for me, not the most interesting. Things I did before I came to Thailand gain that award, as I hope those I plan to do will to. Thailand hasn't and won't overwhelm my life in the way it does some people. I've enjoyed my time in Thailand and I'm looking forward to my future back in my homeland.

I didn't know it before I lived in Thailand, but now I know that I was lucky to be born and educated in the UK. I also feel lucky that I feel like I do about Thai people, because it means I could never get addicted to the place and commit virtual suicide in my homeland by never returning. To me, it is a sad and sorry person who has nothing worth returning to. Stuff like this....

make me realise that some people are in that boat, both because they see making it in Thailand as crucial, and because they ridicule anyone who doesn't feel the same way as having failed.

Who wears the pants in 'old one's' home? Are his assets in his, or his wife's name? Could he make a go of it back home... The answers to those questions would help Smeg decide where he fits into the greater scheme of things.

I believe being called a buffalo is much more offensive than being called a monkey in Thailand! Well at least in Isaan anyway.
