I was pretty astonished by what they gave him, and the total lack of interest from the head teacher, who's command of English is hello and good morning

Most people there either won't be listening or won't understand it anyway. A minute or two later, your son will get a round of applause and it will all be over for him. No one will give a damn. Thai schools are all about going through the motions. Quality is not really important, even if they say otherwise. You just have to go with the flow. It's far better to help your son yourself than to rely on the school, especially for anything related to learning English.
