Who said I find all the English tolerable? Those northerners are just as bad as the Yanks. And as for that lot from the Midlands!

So the end of the sentence "but" is a clever device to reserve praise or judgement.

"Yeah-nah, good game, played alright but...

In the Western USA, which is less formal than, say the Northeast, it's perfectly OK to use "got" per your original post in casual conversation. But you wouldn't generally write it other than a forum post or text message. And in formal conversations like a job interview, not so much either.

^ that's a fair post. It's all related to genre/mode and other localized cultural elements such as dialect.

So is yours. See post 65 - there should be no comma after and.

A native speaker would know that.

    Isn't that lazy English?

Shouldn't it be: I beg, on bended knee, your pardon Sir?

Why are so many English language snobs? I can't say I've come across it in any other nation. The beer not good enough to keep you occupied?

Any truth that the Irish have been downgraded as non native speakers? I pissed myself when I heard that.

Of course I use it, and it seems nowadays everyone uses it, it's all over the media and no doubt probably creeping into English teaching resources.
It seems also that 'got' covers a multitude of meanings, so what does it really mean and is it ok to use it if you are trying to help others to speak English correctly?

    For example:
    I've got - I have
Have you got? - do you have?
    Got it - I understand
When he got there - when he arrived

and how about 'get' instead of fetch, take, arrive, understand etc..?
As a learner, ' got ' is past and past participle of ' get ' and there are tenses in English. My understanding is that you can use different forms or tenses to mean the same thing. I agree that that ' get and got ' are frequently used - maybe it is easy to remember.
