Bin Laden said in one of his 1990s speeches that AQ will continue to fight until the USA as a nation converts to Islam. I understand it's rethoric and I understand he may have changed his stance since then. But I think we should take him seriously. How do you know they aren't arguing about what percentage of the construction contracts are given to women, what percentage to gays and what percentage are given to blacks? I bet not all the bureaucrats who have their fingers in the memorial money pie are republicans and they are the ones who grant the contracts, not the pres, congress, governor or mayor.

I was watching a film/docu on the box last night, I think it was called the path to 9/11. At the end of this when the credits were rolled it commented on a 'Post 9/11 Committee' which had made 47 recommendations. These had now been graded and only one received an 'A'. I think 19 of the others had been graded 'E' or below. If this is true ie the report is not fictional and had not been an idea of the film/docu makers, it seems the USA has not followed up very well on the recommendations that were made.

Good question. Most Americans, especially Bush supporters, are extremely intelligent. For the most part the term "terrorism" creeped into our consciousness back in the late 70s/early 80s. You're right to assume we didn't pay much attention back when fool Limeys were killing each other and we didn't pay much attention when Muslims killed each. Hell, for that matter we didn't even pay much attention when our beloved Israelis were the victims of terrorists. Then OBL fucked up and brought the game to CONUS ... stupid fuckin' move that was with the great GWB in office.

Except that we had a huge moral opportunity and squandered it by wasting our time in Iraq. Because of that Afghanistan is in shambles and could become a problem again, and, we have been ignoring more important threats such as NK and Iran. Now the world is going to question our motives every time we act and had we not gone into Iraq we might be very high up on the moral pedestal right now.

I worded that wrong. I wanted to express the opinion that these terrorist groups seem to get a degree of sympathy in some parts of the world.

I think if the terrorists start spreading out all over the world and start hitting places that haven't been targets ... then even the sympathizer nations will start to wake up.

I don't think it's so much terror sympathisers SK as much as it's a total disgust of US foreign policy and the great GWB in particular.

The terrorists get a degree of sympathy because of actions like what we do in Iraq.

I'm telling you, we should have created special death squads whose sole mission in life was to seek out, infiltrate, and render these groups impotent. Nothing would destroy them quicker than being destroyed from the inside because lack of trust would prevent the groups from growing as members got killed. 500 or 1000 John Clarks would put shivers up the spines of every terrorist in the world (see if you know who I am referring to ;) ).

Fight fire with fire. No country in the world would have opposed such an idea.

Now that the insurgents have bogged us down it simply makes it easier for more to come along and bog us down even more. They know the public has no appetite for high casualty rates. That's why using the general military was a major blunder. We just assumed it would be a cakewalk. The problem is that if the general population doesn't want democracy it becomes a waste of time, resources, and money.

Can you imagine how much better off we'd be security-wise if we'd invested the $400 billion being spent on Iraq to improve border security, airline baggage checking, etc?

Who benefits from the actions taken after 9/11.


These actions have caused 1. antipathy towards the U.S. by many nationalities. 2. These post 9-11 actions (Iraq in particular) have led to increased recruitment.

Personally I don't think terror groups give two shits about "US Foreigh Policy" other than where it impacts their fundamentalists beliefs. And unfortunately that collision was inevitable sooner or later as the world got smaller and smaller.
