A huge 8.8 earthquake has hit just off the coast of Chile according to CNN. They say its one thousand times more powerful than the one that just hit Haiti. In addition there is now a tsuami watch that for all the south American Countries, Central American, and now South Pacific and Hawaii. Seems heavy duty to me, but its just fresh breaking news.

A devastating earthquake measuring 8.8 on the Richter scale has hit Chile, triggering a tsunami warning for Chile and Peru and a tsunami watch for Ecuador, Colombia, Panama, Costa Rica and Antarctica. Early reports said six people were killed in the quake. Later ones suggested dozens had died and the death toll is expected to rise sharply. Telephone and power lines are down in the capital and there has been damage in the historic centre of Santiago, 200 miles north of the epicentre.

After the main quake, which lasted around 30 seconds and could be felt in neighbouring Argentina, people poured onto the streets, hugging each other and crying. The country was shaken by several aftershocks for around two hours after the quake struck.

The website of Crónica newspaper in Concepción, at the epicentre of the quake, and Santiago’s El Mercurio were both down this morning.
