But now a battle for Baghdad is well under way between the two major Muslim sects. Death squads are slaughtering people daily, and an estimated 160,000 Iraqis have fled their homes — mostly here in the capital.
The process ultimately could leave a legacy of bitterness and poison Iraqi society for generations. Each sect has legitimate claims to territory on both sides of the river that they won’t emotionally abandon. And no national Iraqi government can truly function if sectarian “no go” zones are scattered all over the capital.
Baghdad, Iraq’s largest city with a population of more than 6 million, is still a long way from that stark sectarian divide. There are many religiously mixed neighborhoods, and Shiite and Sunni enclaves remain on both sides of the river

If genocide and ethnic cleaning are the result of the war would it make the United States guilty of war crimes?

They are remarkable individuals, each one prepared to risk his or her life in the line of duty, and in the belief that they are making a positive difference to lives of others. Men and women who put their life on the line for this cause are heroes.

I'll never stoop to your level and wish for death even on the enemy. I wish a peaceful solution could be found. I don't enjoy reading about the deaths of innocent civilians. I don't applaud the deaths of terrorists. It's a total waste.

Don't worry though ... God loves the underachieving shirkers and despicable people of the world also. Jesus will forgive you of your sins Milkman ... all you have to do ask.

God has a place in heaven for people like me too ... those poor souls who don't believe in turning the other cheek.

You must have been beside yourself with joy on 9/11/01.

    Definitely not "top shelf"!
More like bottom of the barrel consciousness.

Rejoicing in the murder of people by fanatic terrorists is low in most civilized regions of the planet.

Someone needs to! Clearly your ethical criteria can be considered cloudy with a strong chance of precipitation.

I was very sad and angry about 9/11. It was a terrible and horrific act.

You are doing what many from America are still doing: falsely equating 9/11 with the unprovoked American attack on Iraq.

The two are NOT related, in any way, shape or form.

Rejoicing in the murder of people by fanatic terrorists is low in most civilized regions of the planet.
The deaths of Americans in Iraq are not from terrorists, but enemy combatants.

"The story goes on to note that the leadership of Iraq inherited a body politic warped by decades of tyranny - in other words, even without Baathists, al-Qaeda terrorists and Iranian intelligence agents, Iraq would not be experiencing smooth sailing in the transition from tyranny to liberty. Its a messy process - but millions of Iraqis have voted, and hundreds of thousands of Iraqis have volunteered for the army and police. The Iraqis have told us by their actions what they want - and the Iraqi leaders are wondering if, after all the expenditure of blood and treasure, America will cut and run, just as we did regarding South Vietnam.

President Bush won't; President Bush's supporters will never advocate it - but we'll have to see what the majority of Americans say about it, and we'll find that out in November. My bet is that after all the shouting, it will be found that the American people have returned to power a Republican Party committed to absolute victory."

Speaker: Iraq has only months to avoid collapse

Deadly sectarian violence around Baghdad persists as parliament meets

    Updated: 7:47 a.m. ET Sept. 6, 2006

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Iraq’s leaders have just months to mend their differences or see their country collapse, the speaker of parliament told wrangling deputies on Wednesday after a car bomb caused dozens of casualties at the morning rush hour.
Ethnic Kurds in the chamber demanded a new national flag to end a row over the Saddam-era version that has raised talk of Kurdish secession. But some members complained parliament’s agenda, on its first full session after a summer recess, failed to address urgent issues that may affect the nation’s survival.
Silencing one angry dissenter, Speaker Mahmoud al-Mashhadani told the assembly: “Let’s start talking the same language.

“We have three to four months to reconcile with each other,” Mashhadani, a Sunni Arab, said of a national reconciliation aimed at averting ethnic and sectarian civil war.
“If the country doesn’t survive this, it will go under.”

the bush white house will NEVER admit it, but the civil war began months ago.

even when the helicopters are on top the embassy like they were in saigon, they'll still be calling it 'secterian strife'.

    The Cold War lasted decades.
This war on terror will certainly last as long or longer.
