Currently living in Oman - ditto. People here are mostly rather orthodox Muslims, but are very pragmatic and friendly. Have never felt safer in my whole life. (Have never felt more bored in my life either, but that is another story......:) )
I agree that many Muslim nations have problems, but have met too many genuinely nice people of the Muslim faith in my life to ever jump on the Muslim-bashing bandwagon. My guess is that you have never visited a Muslim or middle-eastern country, and probably have had bad experiences with Muslims in the past. Remember, there are good and bad people of all religions, which is why it is so dangerous to generalize.
My parents and grandparents had a few years with rather unpleasant encounters with your fellow countrymen (both my grandfathers spent time in prison camps during WW2), yet when I grew up I never heard them say anything negative about Germany or Germans. My guess is that it was because they knew that the average German suffered as much, if not more than we did ourselves during that time.
Perhaps there is a lesson there for yourself.....
