    "Vegas", the place or the word, is iconic, and used that way in the culture, if not the world. The icon stands for, among other things, gambling. "Hollywood" is another icon. "Wall Street", "Detroit". They're all over. I can see how this Vegas canard makes Stick-For-The-Day for the right wing talkers to spank Obama with, (and make themselves look silly in the process, but what else is new?) Goodman has milked his little moment in the sun, too.

    I dont know if Goodman is a Jew or not.
    But it is notable that the Jewish criminal gangs known as the Jewish Mafia were predominantly responsible for building Las Vegas and making it what it is today.

    "Las Vegas has long been a hotbed of underworld influence and a worldwide attraction for gambling and prostitution. The Italian Mafia has also, from the conception of Las Vegas as a leisure Mecca, held great sway in the city, but its most famous underworld personages have always been Jewish mobsters Bugsy Siegel and Meyer Lansky. The great scope of Jewish contribution to the creation, and dubious ethics, of Las Vegas may be measured by the words of professor Allen Balboni. Here he discusses the development of the desert city as a gambling resort area:"

    Las Vegas Jews, Jewish Las Vegas

    Farther down in the same source it has this to say.

    The Las Vegas mayor, Oscar Goodman, elected in 1999, is the former president of Temple Beth Sholom. He also has a reputation as a "mob lawyer," defending, among others, Jewish mobster Meyer Lansky and Frank Rosenthal. Rosenthal, notes the Las Vegas Review-Journal, "is credited by some with founding the modern day Las Vegas sports book but was repeatedly denied a gambling license because of association with organized crime members." [ZAPLER, p. 1A]
    http://www.jewishtribalreview.org/lasvegas.htm

    The question remains: what does it have to do with anything?

    Read Panda's post above. I figure Panda is getting an extra kick out of criticizing Goodman and his city. He's got a hard-on for Jewish people. He thinks they are at the head of a conspiracy. It has something to do with banks and such. You can ask him about it.

    Obama knocking Las Vegas has got nothing to do with right-wing bloggers, afaic. There was no need to name Las Vegas specifically. It's bad politics.

    Actually, it was you who brought the Jewish question into the discussion.
    As stated earlier I had no idea what Goodmans religious affiliations were.
    These discussions do tend to motivate one to research topics and further ones appreciation of the wider picture.

    What you figure Panda thinks really has nothing at all to do with the topic at hand. Once you start attacking the debater based on only personal opinions it becomes clear that you have nothing of substance to add.

    Is this field-hand self-obsessed or what??? No matter the subject, in the end it's always about him. Obama has turned his self-reference into a joke and this is ridiculous. A supporter dies of breast cancer, and the punch line is...well, you'll see:

    Note the crowd's uneasy reaction. They're Obama fans, but this is too weird even for them...

    How thick (or sick) do some people have to be to miss the point in the edited 50 second clip above. This poor woman couldn't afford health insurance and may or may not have died as a result. Early detection of most cancers including breast cancer dramatically increases survival rates. My wife gets her breasts scanned every year for free. Well, not really for free, we pay for it in our Medicare tax levy same as every other tax payer in Aus. I recently went for my annual check up with a private doctor. Did the whole thing. Blood tests, urine, physical inspection for skin cancers etc, plus the dreaded finger up the bum for prostate check. Blood tests came back indicating a rise in PSA (which is an early indicator of prostate cancer). So the government flew me down to the nearest city with ultrasound facilities for further investigations as I live in a small isolated town. Again at a private medical facility. Didn't cost me a cent apart from food and accommodation.
    It aint over yet, but things are looking pretty good re the possibility of prostate cancer. The point here is that the government was actually spending MY money that I have paid into the national health insurance scheme (Medicare) over the years to look after my health. And just why would they bother to do that? Well, pretty simple really. Its in interests of the governments health care insurance scheme (Medicare) to keep me fit and well, working and paying taxes including the Medicare levy, rather than to have me sick and off work with a cancer that could be treated if found early. It all makes perfect economic sense when you have a medical system combined with a compulsory insurance scheme which has their primary motive in keeping you well and in good health. I never have to worry about the insurance company pulling the cover if I get really sick even if I live to 100 and am no longer contributing to the scheme.

    That poor lady who couldn't afford medical insurance and died of breast cancer may well be still alive and well if she was born in Australia or indeed a USA with a universal health care scheme that works for the people rather than corporate profits. THAT, is the point in what Obama was saying in the edited clip above. And the fact that she reportedly wanted to be buried in an Obama T-shirt pays testimony that she believed her country could and should do better for its citizens re health care. To try and turn this womans plight, as recounted by Obama, around and make out it is nothing but self praise from the President is extremely superficial and shallow. I am sure this poor woman would be turning in her grave if she could hear how the likes of Jet and Booners have so lightly regarded her possibly unnecessary death simply to take some cheap shots and make political mileage of it. Shame on you both! People are dieing for corporate profits and you show no compassion.

    What has he done for America in the past year? I don't give a toss about his credentials anymore; he has not done his job and even members of his own party are verbalising that fact. Weak and ineffectual leader who just spouts pretty words and charms fallible folks.

    Oh, and thanks mods, for deleting my post on the breast cancer lady.

    Does the "etc" include doubling the deficit, increasing unemployment, creating total unease among investors and businesses, making a laughing stock outta America with his bowing and scraping and girly talk, making America look weak to China, N Korea, Iran, Al Qaeda? Losing control and the respect even of his own libbie party? Stuff like that? Then I agree with the "etc"

    laughing stock to whom? bitter canadians? america's reputation and standing in the world has increased significantly since obama took office

    and btw, who kept america safe longer?

    bush: 9 months. on planes that originated in the US

    obama: on a flight that originated abroad, some guy tried to blow up his underwear in obama's 12th month in office.

    You are right. I made two errors. Sorry ...bamboy quadrupled the debt not the deficit.

    President Barack Obama has repeatedly claimed that his budget would cut the deficit by half by the end of his term. But as Heritage analyst Brian Riedl has pointed out, given that Obama has already helped quadruple the deficit with his stimulus package, pledging to halve it by 2013 is hardly ambitious. The Washington Post has a great graphic which helps put President Obama’s budget deficits in context of President Bush’s.

    Oops, debt numbers are less important than deficit? He has also increased the deficit. What's his budget? $3.8 tril, with a deficit of $1.6 tril?
    What's unemployment at now, reach around?

    laughing stock of the world:

    Here's a compilation for ya, ray:

    The European printed tide seems to have turned against Obama when he was given The Nobel Prize for Peace. This prompted a Scandinavian news agency to run a commentary entitled "The End of Obamamania? Europe's Tepid Reaction to Obama's Nobel." ....(enough of that old news)
    Negative hardly seems a strong enough description of the headlines out of France in the last few days. Less than a week after an earthquake leveled the former French colony of Haiti, French President Sarkozy accused Obama of having imperialist tendencies and a desire to occupy the destroyed half of the island of Hispaniola. Of course, these two have been on the outs for some time now.

    Sarkozy was the first European leader to turn on President Obama in 2009, describing him in an interview as "naïve." He had good reason to feel that way. Early in his Presidency, Obama had sent a letter to the French President going on about how well he envisioned them working together. Alas, the letter was sent to the former French President, Jacques Chirac — not Sarkozy.... Needless to say, the French media are no longer dazzled by the American President and they think even less of Michelle Obama's fashion sense.

    Yes, safe to say, this week's first anniversary clippings from the British papers are not likely to be pasted into the Obama family scrapbook. Just look at the headlines. The Financial Times: "The real missed opportunity in Obama's first year." The Independent: "So, one year on, has Obama delivered?" Also from The Independent: "On Human Rights, Obama's first year has disappointed." The London Times: "Barack Obama floundering a year on after wave of goodwill crashes."

    But Nile Gardiner of the Telegraph will surely have to gate crash his way into the White House from now on after penning his opus:

    "10 Reasons why George W. Bush was a smarter world leader than Barack Obama." Since David Letterman is unlikely to read this top ten list, we've printed them here for your convenience:
    1) Bush never apologized for his country;
    2) Bush identified and confronted evil;
    3) Bush made the advance of freedom a key component of his agenda; (
    4) Bush defended national sovereignty;
    5) Bush believed in the Special Relationship (with Britain);
    6) Bush cultivated key allies;
    7) Bush understood the importance of missile defense;
    8) Bush believed in fighting a global war;
    9) Bush did not compromise U.S. security: and
    10) Bush did not send mixed messages in the face of the enemy.
