Canadian PM revokes Iraq war support

Canadian PM revokes Iraq war support

    Posted 20 minutes ago

Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper has suddenly reversed his once fierce support for the US invasion of Iraq, saying it is "absolutely an error".
"Let's be clear. It was absolutely an error," Mr Harper said under fire from rivals in a televised political debate ahead of October 14 elections.
"It's obviously clear the evaluation of weapons of mass destruction proved not to be correct," he said.
"That's why we're not sending anybody to Iraq."
In March 2003 Mr Harper, then in opposition, delivered a speech in Parliament in support of the US-led Iraq war.
He became embroiled this week in a row about plagiarism after his former speech writer admitted to copying almost half of it from a speech delivered by former Australian prime minister John Howard two days earlier.
In 2003, Canada's then Liberal government refused President George W Bush's request to support its Iraq invasion, but supported the US incursion in Afghanistan.
Canadians have not been surveyed on the Iraq war of late, but most were opposed to the Iraq invasion at the time.

Think we need some input from Jettie and Pickle. I'm sure as Canadians they will agree.

Harper is under attack and this is but another example of politicians flip flopping to save their political asses.

Fek, missed the Canuck PM English debate to watch Palin. Well, our troops are in Afghanistan and always have been, so what's the fekin problem changing an opinion on Iraq? I'm still voting Harper. Who's the alternative? Liberal Dion (kinda cute but a Quebecois who wants more gov power and social programs) or New Democrat Layton (fekin wants to restore unions to create more jobs -- ya, unions create jobs). FO. I'm voting for Harper. Taxes are still too high here tho, but I rack that up to the provincial and civic schmucks.

    hmmmm....... harper the plagiarist?

Prime Minister Stephen Harper's re-election campaign took a hit this week when it was revealed that Harper plagiarized a 2003 pro-Iraq War speech by former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

"This is the ultimate nightmare which the world must take decisive and effective steps to prevent," parroted Harper, in one of many word-for-word rip-offs of Howard's speech.
    Political plagiarism

needless to say, that's interesting that you are supporting haper, especially considering how you've attacked biden on the very same issue...

^ Hey, I watched part of the French debate. Very civilised.

Poor, ray, you picked up on the "plagiarism" point but missed the whole story: Harper's speechwriter admitted he included that as an idea and meant to rewrite it and did not. He resigned. Pretty basic string of words anyway, and not like he said he was from a coal-mining family, like Biden did -- you'd think he of all people would know what kinda job his dad did. Try again, little ray. You better stick to trying to figure out the US election; trying to figure out another country's election debates would really fry your brain, n'est-ce pas?

Me too, well, parts of it . . . Let's face it, though, the US VP Q&A was NOT a debate.

Ah, you have seen the error of your ways . . . yes, you should stick to your own country's election . . . one sees the results of not doing so.

    N'est pas?!
