Americans don't seem to have a problem with internment as long as it isn't their own, selling souvenirs from concentration camps is just ridiculous. imagine the outrage if the Germans were selling tee shirts and mugs from Auschwitz.

I better get in first here before Boon Mee or Texpat, but the Germans are doing a booming trade in tourists visiting the old concentration camps now in much the same way the Cambodians are displaying the atrocities of more recent times.
However, its not done as some kind of a joke or taken lightly by anyone. They are certainly not proud of those past crimes against humanity.

The same is being done here, a centre opened yesterday here on an old battleground, but that is done to educate. Its very important that people know their history.

You can't take 5 years of someones life on a maybe
They can, and they do.

Like maybe they wernt guilty of anything at all and were held unlawfully without trial for years before being released. Guantanamo Bay makes a mockery of what the US government purports to be fighting for. And lets not forget extraordinary rendition. "Suspects" flown to prison camps in other countries like Egypt to be tortured so the USA could claim it wasn't them who did the crime. You should hang your head in shame Boon Mee for supporting such criminal acts.
someone recently wrote a book about his 5 years of imprisonment at guantanamo.Originally Posted by Panda

the only good news is that both mccain and obama have pledged to close guantanamo.

Wonder if you can order the GITMO souvineers online? I think they are quite lovely. Mind you spose I can always request a few from some of my mates down in that area.![]()

would you walk around in one of those tee shirts?
^Sure why not???

I think you have been in America for too long Brit, you are starting to think like them now. get yourself out of there before its too late
I quite like the 911 ones with Bin Laden, was a great success when they sold them here, wonder how successful they would be in that shop at Guatanamo

Then why do all the Brits on the board bash America?
Hey, Thailand has an amusement park near the River Kwai memorials, no? I bet there are Auschwitz T-shirts.
come on, they are making big bucks out of the atrocities. At least Gitmo is tongue in cheek.
Sure, in the weeks after 9/11, lots of the muslims on Koh Samui were driving around the island with Bin Laden tees on and their wife/sister on the back was fully burka-attired.
How much are those Gitmo coffee mugs?

All? I certainly haven't noticed that. Some do, certainly, but by no means can you claim all of us do.Originally Posted by Jet Gorgon

Yes, I do think some individual Americans are idiots and I do think the present US President is a very unfunny joke. I think the same of a lot of my own countrymen & my country's Govt as well. Or Thailand's PM & some Thai people. In fact, you could substitute quite a few countries there
That doesn't amount to America bashing, Thai bashing or Brit bashing, though. To do that, one needs to generalise a whole lot more.![]()

I'm not a Brit,Originally Posted by Jet Gorgon

Another over the top generalization by Jet. I am not a Brit either BTW. Or maybe its the nasty Euros she means?
It seems to be a common default setting for the more blood thirsty, war mongering Yanks and their supporters to resort to the role of victim when their ethical values are challenged. --- You hate America; -- You are jealous of our freedom; You are jealous of our prosperity; -- etc, etc ......
I guess they must actually believe their own excuses. A bit sad really that their minds are so closed they cant understand why the vast majority of other people around the world see them differently than they see themselves.
