There's undoubtably "American bashing" on this forum but by the same token there's "flag-waving", an over sensitiveness and defensiveness to legitimate criticism of US govt. policies, and those that shout-down, as well.

All a bit chicken and eggish.

As I give this more thought, it's interesting that most of the US bashers do not come from countries that have been negatively affected from or could have a legitimate beef with American policies. That would be understandable. Rather, they seem to come from a few W. European countries with a smattering of down under, down under.

Interesting. The US never did anything but good things for them.

Junior varsity players on the sidelines always criticize the first-stringers in the game. Even when they're on the same team.

    It's natural.

Yeah that's it, it's all jealousy...

One day I hope you will all 'get it', the difference between 'Bush bashing'- criticism of the Bush administration, or of longer term US government policies- and 'America bashing' - criticism of the US itself. Frankly the defensiveness of several of you to legitimate criticism of your governments policies is contributing to this very America bashing you decry.

Get something right- we do not owe any fealty or loyalty to your government of the day. And frankly, neither does a US citizen. The values that you owe your 'patriotism' too are embodied in such things as The Constitution, The Gettysburg Address and the Declaration of Independence, and ultimately safeguarded by The Judiciary. Not the PR spin of some government selling it's policies- soon there will be a new Presidency, and the same acid test will apply. Your government can be just as right or wrong as anybody elses- what makes you think that has any association with the size of your economy, military, WW2, the Cold 'War' or any of these other non-sequiturs you bring up?

Some of the sternest criticism of US government policy comes from US citizens, on this board and elsewhere- and I notice you 'Flag wavers' are particularly sensitive about that. Maybe you should stop, think and realise that this is a large of what made your country great in the first place.
    ... Or not.

Tell us what New Zealand has done to make the world a better place. Come on Ant.

You're good for bashing any and all other countries.

    What has NZ done?

Nothing Tex, absolutely nothing. All that I do and say is motivated by an inherent desire to be American and the resulting jealousy that I'm not. Go back to shouting down any criticism of the US.

and they just can't get over it.

Ant you're selling your country short. All Blacks have changed the way rugby is played, given the world Kiwi Fruit, added more than any other to the sport of sailing, provided leadership in conservation efforts, etc.

I'm being serious Ant. I'm sure the Kiwis have contributed something to the betterment of the world. But for some reason, you prefer to denigrate others when asked to list a few attributes of your countrymen. What's the problem?

let's take this sports metaphor a bit further...what type of person quits in middle of the game when their team is getting its ass kicked?

The 'problem', as I've stated several times, is that I don't think this thread serves any real or legitimate purpose. It's not sincere and strikes me as a pointless bit of internet dick-waving.

Why should I feel compelled to laud the achievments of my nation or list attributes of my countrymen just because some are apparently to precious to handle a bit of criticism.

As opposed to the other 42,000 threads on Teak Door? Unlike your 6,223 posts?

Bullshit. Your single-mindedness prohibits you from adding anything (like Norton did on your behalf) useful to this thread, and you slide directly into your comfortable slagging rut.

It's not "bullshit" actually. It's my honest opinion. Deal with it or don't, but don't pretend to tell me what I do or don't think. At least drop the irony of mentioning "single-mindedness" if you do.
