    What has your country done...

As so many folks here find great pleasure in bashing the USA, please enlighten us on what your home country is doing to improve the world. Aid to somewhere other than the homeland? Troops to keep peace somewhere (I don't think five troopers really counts)? Decisive action to stop genocide and/or starvation? Actual feats rather than years of debate, such as whether Darfur needs help? Come on, I'm sure there's so much to tell us.

i am an aussie and we have seen to it that at least one countryman has died in each war so that we get invited to all the postwar memorials. it has been difficult at times but we are a persistent breed.

Well the Aussies did free the East Timorese from the Indonesian insurgents.

Then we took control of their massive under-sea gas fields that should have fallen under East Timorese territorial waters. But what the hell. Spoils of war, and anyway we did let them keep some. Wouldn't want to be accused of stealing their natural resources :-).

And of course we did help Bush protect the world from weapons of mass destruction by invading Iraq. That one could be a real bonanza except for those pesky Muslims.

We also assisted Rio Tinto and the corrupt Papua New Guinea government in exploiting the copper resources of Bouganville by imposing repressive laws on the native people and providing helicopter gunships to straff protesting villagers. Oh, nearly forgot. We also imposed a blockade on the people of Bouganville which prevented medical supplies reaching the thousands of men women and kids who died as a result.

I love freedom and democracy! Iran is looking good too. Just waiting for GW to give the word. Opps, sorry. New government in OZ now, so maybe it will not be on.

Its all for their own good you know.

Finland has provided the world with Santa Claus, Koskenkorva vodka, quality saunas and the world's best mobile phones for a long time.

I feel that's all we are required to do, given the small size of our country.

Well, with the good comes the bad.
And when intervening military in a foreign country, for good.
    By your country standards.
Usually results in more bad than good.
    By any standards.

The United Nations Security Council issued Resolution 502, calling on Argentina to withdraw forces from the Islands and for both parties to seek a diplomatic solution.[22] International reaction ranged from support in the Latin American countries (with the exception of Chile), to opposition in Europe (with the exception of Spain), the Commonwealth, and eventually the United States. The British sent an expeditionary force to retake the islands, leading to the Falklands War. After short but fierce naval and air battles, the British landed at San Carlos Water on 21 May, and a land campaign followed until the Argentine forces surrendered on 14 June.

^ Rarely in history will you see an attacking force less than one fifth the size of the defending force take them out so efficiently. Mistakes were made (always) but it was a well fought campaign.

I hope the message is don't try treading on our patch. No Argie Bargie. Napoleon and Hitler got the message too, eventually. Ditto the Spaniards. The UK has done many things for the World- not all good. Same many of it's ex-colonies. That does not mean we were always right of course.

So the UK invaded the Falklands 26 years ago and Sir Ed built a few schools and hospitals for the Nepalese 40 years ago.

Aside from that, it seems not a much.

Don't be so harsh on our 'cousins' there, Tex.
Recall the map of the World was almost completely red with their colonies at one time?
