Israel has yet to provide evidence of Unrwa staff terrorist links, Colonna report says

Exclusive: Review finds government has yet to substantiate claims UN relief agency staff have ties to Hamas or Islamic Jihad

Israel has yet to provide supporting evidence of its claims that employees of the UN relief agency Unrwa are members of terrorist organisations, an independent review led by the former French foreign minister Catherine Colonna has said.

The Colonna report, which was commissioned by the UN in the wake of Israeli allegations, found that Unrwa had regularly supplied Israel with lists of its employees for vetting, and that “the Israeli government has not informed Unrwa of any concerns relating to any Unrwa staff based on these staff lists since 2011”.

Israeli allegations of the involvement of Unrwa staff in the 7 October Hamas attack on Israel led major donors in January to cut their funding to the agency, the main channel of humanitarian support not only to Palestinians in Gaza but to Palestinian refugee communities across the region.

    ELECTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES

The war in Gaza has moved into American universities: 'It's Joe Biden's headache'

Protesters block entrances, heckle and are arrested, while principals come under greater political pressure.

A large group of pro-Palestinian protesters have camped out at Columbia University in recent days

Krigen i Gaza er rykket ind pa de amerikanske universiteter: '''Det er Joe Bidens hovedpine''' | Valg i USA | DR

At Columbia University in New York, all in-person classes have been canceled and are now online.

And this time it's not a pandemic, but a war that has forced students to return to Zoom.

The war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas has led to so much harassment at the university that the management has been forced to cancel physical classes until the students go on vacation at the end of April.

And Columbia University is far from the only elite American university affected by the war.

Among parts of the American left, he has been nicknamed 'Genocide Joe' – and that says a lot about where the debate is right now.

BIRGITTE BORUP, CULTURE EDITOR AT BERLINGSKE.
On Monday, several students at New York University were arrested after massive protests on campus. Also at Yale University, at least 45 students were arrested Monday for the same reason.

Demonstrations and heated debates have spread like wildfire on American universities over the past six months. And right now, universities are experiencing another wave of pro-Palestinian demonstrations, with students blocking roads, entrances and lawns on campuses for days at a time.

At the same time, students on both sides say there has been an increase in both anti-Semitic and Islamophobic incidents on campuses.

In an American election year, the heated debate could be a major headache for Joe Biden, says Birgitte Borup, editorial director at Berlingske's cultural editorial office with in-depth knowledge of the United States.

Among parts of the American left, he has been nicknamed 'Genocide Joe' – and that says a lot about where the debate is right now.

The Israel-Palestine conflict as an identity marker

During Monday's protests -- which took place at several universities across the country -- students urged their universities to drop economic ties with Israel and its arms suppliers. At the same time, several US media reports that during Monday's protests there were anti-Semitic chants and that Jewish students feared for their safety.

Subsequently, several U.S. congressmen have called on Columbia University's president to resign, as they do not believe the president is able to create a safe environment at universities for Jewish students and educators.

"It's nothing new that young people are upset. We saw something similar during the Vietnam War, but the protests we are seeing right now are of a completely different nature. Partly because we see minorities being harassed, and partly because American citizens harass other American citizens over an international conflict, says Birgitte Borup.

The pro-Palestinian cause is what young people, more than anyone else, have chosen to engage in these years.

BIRGITTE BORUP, CULTURE EDITOR AT BERLINGSKE.

And this is not the first time that rectors of prestigious universities have been put under pressure and accused of failing to protect Jewish students over the past six months. Last December, three principals had to testify at a congressional hearing, which among other things led to the resignation of one of the principals. Shortly afterwards, another principal resigned, partly because of the hearing.

Conversely, the congressional hearing drew criticism from pro-Palestinian activists who argued that the hearing was an attempt to stifle criticism of Israel.

According to Birgitte Borup, the war in Gaza occupies so much space on American campuses because it has become a kind of identity marker in relation to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

    - It has almost become defining for what kind of person you are, she says.

She describes American universities as a hotbed of identity politics movements in the United States, and that they have now built a community around the cause:

The pro-Palestinian cause is what young people, more than anyone else, have chosen to engage in these years. Gen Z's commitment is not surprising, because American universities have a long history of fostering leftist beliefs in particular.

    ‘Genocide Joe’

Asked about the protests on campus on Monday, Joe Biden said he condemned "the anti-Semitic protests" as well as "those who don't understand what's going on with the Palestinians."

This isn't the first time Joe Biden has had to answer questions about large pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campuses and reports of anti-Semitic heckling -- and it's hardly the last time.

At Columbia University, protesters have set up camp on campus in protest and all in-person classes have now been rejected. (Photo: © Spencer Platt, Ritzau Scanpix)
There are elections in the United States in November, and if Joe Biden is to beat Donald Trump, he needs as many young voters as possible, Birgitte Borup said. But when some of them call him 'Genocide Joe', how is he going to succeed?

"It's a very difficult situation for Joe Biden to deal with, because he needs the young voters who are committed to the pro-Palestinian cause. But at the same time, Biden is pro-Israel at heart, and historically it has always been in the interest of the United States to support Israel, Borup said.

Both the war in Gaza and the war in Ukraine have raised the question of whether the United States should be the world's policeman or whether the United States should pack up and take care of itself.

BIRGITTE BORUP, CULTURE EDITOR AT BERLINGSKE.

February saw an example of how the war in Gaza has seeped into American politics. Here, about 13 percent of voters in the state of Michigan chose to vote blank in the Democratic primary. They did so in protest of U.S. support for Israel, and the warning came primarily from the Arab minority and young voters.

READ ALSO:The war in Gaza presents Biden with challenges both at home and abroad

Michigan is a swing state that "you have to win if you dream of becoming president," DR's USA correspondent said in February.

"It is clearly Joe Biden's headache to handle the issue without repelling the young voters he needs," Borup said.

Counter-protesters also showed up outside Columbia University on Monday. (Photo: © Spencer Platt, Ritzau Scanpix)

According to her, this is a much easier situation for Donald Trump, as he can continue to thunder against a group of voters on the left who would never vote for him anyway. Meanwhile, while Trump is in court, the demonstrations come on trial accused of paying hush-hush money to a former actor.

"It is absolutely good for Trump that there is something else that takes attention away from the trial," Birgitte Borup said.

She says that the Israel-Palestine conflict will play a part in the overall value struggle during the presidential election, which this year is more dominated by foreign policy:

Both the war in Gaza, but also the war in Ukraine, have raised the question of whether the United States should be the world's policeman or whether the United States should pack up and take care of itself.

Ciabatta is an Italian bread that was first produced back in 1982 by Arnaldo Cavallari. Cavallari was a miller and baker near Venice. During this time the French Baguettes were very popular and bakeries wanted to develop a product that would be able to compete with a baguette
