The Americans say it will take 60 days to build the pier. It's not clear if that 60 days start after they arrive in Gaza. So hungry Palestinians will have to wait at least 2 months for the food. Charities have said those suffering in Gaza cannot wait that long.

Meanwhile, an aid ship laden with some 200 tonnes of food is expected to set sail from a port in Larnaca, Cyprus on Sunday afternoon, Cypriot media report. The ship, Open Arms, belongs to the Spanish charity of the same name, and the food on board has been provided by US charity World Central Kitchen.

It is unclear how any aid delivered by sea would get safely to shore before the US pier is built. Gaza has no functioning port and its surrounding waters are too shallow for large vessels.

However Oscar Camps, the founder of Open Arms, told the Associated Press that at the destination point - which remains a secret - a team from the World Central Kitchen has been building a pier to receive the aid.

There will be far fewer waiting in 60+ days. Biden's political move to build a pier was a very weak attempt to pacify those demanding an immediate Isreali cease fire.

First, in a telling moment, a camera captures the US president immediately after his State of the Union speech in the House of Representatives almost whispering to a Democratic politician that it's time for a "come-to-Jesus meeting" with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When Joe Biden realizes that a camera microphone is picking up his words, he stops but also says, 'Good, good!'

Only a week later, Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader of the Senate, rises in the second chamber of Congress and thunders at the Israeli leader. In his speech, he also criticized Israel's warfare in Gaza and its right-wing government. He called on Israel to hold elections to replace Netanyahu as leader.

The two incidents are the latest – and clearest – examples of the ever-growing crisis in the normally close relationship between the United States and Israel. A relationship that successive US presidents have called "unbreakable".




Both Joe Biden and Chuck Schumer are lifelong supporters of Israel.

It's part of Joe Biden's political DNA, and Chuck Schumer is the highest-ranking Jewish politician in the United States. To see him criticize the Israeli government in this way is, as one commentator wrote, like watching "an elephant fly." Joe Biden subsequently calls the speech 'good'

Has been Israel's most loyal ally


During his visit to Israel immediately after Hamas's October 7 terror attacks, Joe Biden pledged his rock-solid support for Israel. He described himself as a "Zionist" and embraced Netanyahu, with whom he has otherwise had a complicated relationship.

He understood the shock, pain and anger of Israelis, he said, but warned Netanyahu and Israelis not to be swallowed up by the anger.

Since then, the Biden administration has been Israel's most loyal ally.

It has supported Israel's war against Hamas with emergency shipments of weapons, prevented criticism of Israel in the UN Security Council, and set the stage for an additional $100 billion in aid (in addition to the small $24 billion the U.S. already gives to Israel annually, which normally covers a quarter of the country's defense budget).

Biden's difficult balancing act


But with the rising civilian death toll and the growing humanitarian disaster in Gaza, Biden has seen his warning and other U.S. advice and calls ignored by Benjamin Netanyahu and the Israeli government.

He has seen frustration and anger at Israel's actions in Gaza and his own seemingly unwavering support spread, especially among young people and minorities, but also in his democratic base.

In a critical election year, he has been interrupted during speeches. He has been met by protesters, by protest votes during several primaries, and by internal criticism from employees of his own administration.

Biden's unwavering support has cost him dearly. Yet Netanyahu has played high stakes -- and continued not to listen.

And slowly, according to critics far too slowly, Joe Biden's embrace of Benjamin Netanyahu has stiffened. In an interview with MSNBC a few days after his "come-to-Jesus" remark, Joe Biden said outright that Netanyahu "hurt Israel."

Rarely, as the Wall Street Journal writes, has there been a moment when an American president has been more closely linked to Israel and at the same time in such deep conflict with its leader.

But that is precisely Biden's new strategy: on the one hand, to distance himself from Benjamin Netanyahu and his actions in Gaza and, on the other, to continue supporting Israel in its war against Hamas. A difficult balancing act.

Benjamin Netanyahu, for his part, has strongly criticized both Joe Biden's and Chuck Schumer's statements. He has called Schumer's call for Israeli elections an inappropriate interference in the internal affairs of another democratic country.

On Monday, Joe Biden and Benjamin Netanyahu spoke for the first time in a month, and Axios reports that Joe Biden told the Israeli prime minister that he was not trying to undermine him politically. The conversation should have cleared the air slightly.

But more clashes lie ahead, and as the war in Gaza drags on, the gap between the governments in Washington and Jerusalem only seems to deepen.

On Monday, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. And according to Ole Waever, professor of international politics, the Security Council's decision requires that the West is prepared to enforce the resolution.

- In other international contexts, we would like to be able to use arguments about the rules-based order with which we have to hit other people over the head when international rules are not complied with. Therefore, it will be a boomerang against the authority of the West if we do not put pressure on Israel.

The United States did not vote for the resolution, yet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu criticized the Americans for turning their backs on their consistent line on Israel. The United States chose not to exercise its right of veto in the Security Council and has thus allowed the resolution to be voted through. And that is an obligation on the Americans, Waever said.

The United States is also committed to taking the next step.

Two Palestinians, who the Israeli military said posed a “threat” to its soldiers, were killed by an air strike in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Authority said early Thursday.

“During the operation, an aircraft struck two terrorists who posed an immediate threat to the forces,” the Israeli army said in a brief message.

The Palestinian Authority’s health ministry also said two people had been killed by Israeli fire in the Nur Shams camp and that their bodies had been transferred to a hospital in Tulkarm.

On Wednesday, three Palestinians, including an Islamic Jihad commander, were killed in an Israeli strike on a car in Jenin, a stronghold of Palestinian armed factions in the northern West Bank.

Violence intensifies in West Bank
Several hundred people, including young men firing automatic rifles into the air, took part in the funerals of the three men in a refugee camp next to Jenin on Wednesday evening, according to AFP journalists.

Violence has intensified in the West Bank, occupied by Israel since 1967, since the start of the war in Gaza that was triggered by the unprecedented Hamas attacks on Israel on Oct 7.

According to the Palestinian Authority, at least 430 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers or settlers in the West Bank since the war began and thousands more have been arrested.
