And on a semi-related note, I see Gorgeous George has been busy rattling cages again.

Mr Galloway's first words after winning were addressed to the Labour leader.

"Keir Starmer," he said. "This is for Gaza."
"Keir Starmer and Rishi Sunak are two cheeks of the same backside," he said. "And they both got well and truly spanked tonight."

Israel Opts Out of Cease-Fire Talks as Hamas Delegation Arrives in Cairo

Israeli officials did not attend after Hamas was said to have refused a request from Israel to provide a list of the hostages who were still alive.

By Adam Rasgon reporting from Jerusalem

    March 3, 2024

"A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Sunday for talks aimed at achieving a cease-fire in the war in Gaza and an exchange of hostages held by militants there for Palestinian prisoners, according to an official in the group, Basem Naim. But a breakthrough in the negotiations did not appear to be imminent, as Israel decided not to attend.

Israel made the decision after Qatar’s prime minister informed David Barnea, the head of Mossad, Israel’s foreign intelligence service, on Sunday that Hamas had refused an Israeli request to provide a list of the hostages who were still alive, according to an Israeli official.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel said on Thursday that he had requested the names of hostages who would be freed in an agreement.

Another factor that figured into Israel’s decision was that Hamas declined to consent to the terms for swapping hostages for Palestinian prisoners that the United States presented in Paris about 10 days ago, said two Israeli officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized publicly.

The U.S. outline entailed Israel releasing hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for 40 hostages, with different numbers of prisoners being traded for different categories of hostages, according to two officials with knowledge of the negotiations.

Mr. Naim declined to respond to the claims about the Hamas refusals.

The United States has been pushing for a cease-fire ahead of Ramadan, the Muslim holy month that starts in about a week, but slow progress in the talks has made that challenging.

Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, was leading the delegation in Cairo, Mr. Naim said in a text message.

Sticking points in the negotiations have been the number of Palestinian prisoners to be released, including the number of those serving life sentences, and whether a cease-fire will be permanent or temporary.

On Saturday, a senior U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive diplomatic efforts, told reporters that Israel had “more or less accepted” a framework for the deal and that the ball was now in Hamas’s court.

But Mahmoud Mardawi, a Hamas official, suggested on Saturday that the talks were not advancing.

“We haven’t seen any change in the Israeli position at all,” Mr. Mardawi told Al Jazeera in a live interview. “It hasn’t offered us anything.”

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has said progress in the talks would require Hamas to soften its “ludicrous demands.”

President Biden said on Thursday that the bloodshed in northern Gaza earlier in the day, when scores of Palestinians were killed after Israeli forces opened fire around a convoy of aid trucks, would complicate negotiations for a cease-fire.

“I know it will,” he told reporters in Washington, as he backed away from his earlier prediction that an agreement could be in place by Monday. “Probably not by Monday, but I’m hopeful,” he said.

The Israeli military has said most of those who died in the chaotic scene on Thursday were killed in a crush around the vehicles. Palestinian witnesses and doctors have said Israeli forces fired extensively, wounding and killing many."

Five killed in Gaza when aid was dropped from planes

    OF
    Carsten Thomsen

Five people were killed and ten were injured when aid was dropped from planes over Gaza today.

This is according to the Palestinian health authority in Gaza, which is controlled by Hamas, according to CNN.

The parachute packages landed in the al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City.

According to CNN, a video shows that some of the parachutes were not properly unfolded when they landed.

Muhammad Al-Sheikh, head of the emergency department at the Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City, said several of the wounded were in critical condition.

It has not been revealed which country the aid came from, but the UN and several Western countries have dropped aid on Gaza in recent days.

Israeli settlers are expanding at record speed: Can make a Palestinian state impossible

Settlements in the West Bank are growing rapidly and violence committed against the Palestinian population is escalating, according to a UN report.

The number of Israeli settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories is growing at an unprecedented rate and to such an extent that it could make the creation of a future Palestinian state impossible.

These are the words of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, who strongly criticizes the continued development of settlements and points out that it is a war crime when a nation expels its population and moves parts of its own population to areas that the nation has under occupation.

READ ALSO:'It's either settlements or a two-state solution. There can't be both'

The volume of violent incidents committed by settlers and offenses related to the settlements has reached shocking and unprecedented levels.

VOLKER TÜRK, UN HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
"This week's announcements that Israel is planning to build an additional 3,476 homes in the settlements of Maale Adumim, Efrat and Kedar are in complete violation of international law," the UN chief said in a statement.
The statement follows a report by the United Nations which concludes that the already existing Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank have been expanded by around 24,300 new homes between November 1, 2022 and October 31, 2023.

This is the highest number of new homes since statistics began in 2017.

In addition, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich recently announced that Israel has no plans to reduce the number of new settlements.

"We will maintain momentum with the settlement of the areas," he told Reuters in late February.

    What is the West Bank?

    • A piece of land located between Israel and Jordan.
    • Was occupied by Israel during the Six Day War in 1967.
    • The UN General Assembly has asked the International Court of Justice to rule on the legality of Israel's occupation.
    • According to the UN, Israel has established illegal settlements in the area.
    • About three million Palestinians live in the West Bank.
    • According to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, more than 700,000 settlers live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
    • Israel has full military control of the area and access to it, while the Palestinians themselves are responsible for e.g. health care, schools, etc.
    • The Palestinian territories of the West Bank are politically controlled by the Palestinian Authority, which is dominated by the Fatah party. There have been no parliamentary elections in the Palestinian territories since 2006.
    • The West Bank has no physical borders with Gaza, where Hamas has political control.

Sources: Un.org, The Great Dane, lex.dk, UN, US State Department

    Escalating violence

The report also points to a drastic increase in the intensity, violence and regularity of violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers and the Israeli state against Palestinians in the West Bank. Especially in the aftermath of Hamas's October 7 terror attack on Israel.

"The West Bank was already in crisis. But the volume of violent incidents committed by settlers and offences related to the settlements has reached shocking and unprecedented levels, and it risks destroying any practical possibility of the creation of a viable Palestinian state.

Since October 7, according to the UN, more than 400 Palestinians have been killed by settlers and Israeli security forces in the West Bank, and 603 cases of settlers attacking Palestinians have been recorded.
Israel's actions against the Palestinian people must stop immediately. The only way forward is to find a sustainable political solution that ends the occupation, leads to the creation of an independent Palestinian state and guarantees fundamental human rights for the Palestinian people, says UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk.

There are synagogues in Canada hosting real estate events that feature companies that sell land in the illegal settlements. And they cry "antisemitism" when the protesters show up. They've long worn out their victim status.

Equipment for Gaza port on its way from the United States: 'The first two months do not indicate that it helps people in Gaza'

The first children in Gaza have died of starvation. UNICEF warns of famine and calls for a lasting ceasefire.

A U.S. military ship is now on its way with the first equipment to build a port in Gaza. This is according to the US Central Command.

The ship was launched shortly after US President Joe Biden announced that the US would send humanitarian aid to Gaza by sea.

Gaza has no functioning ports, and therefore the US military will establish a temporary pier off the Gaza coast where ships carrying aid will be able to dock.

Currently, aid is delivered via a few trucks or dropped from aircraft; A method that is criticized for not being effective enough.

Several aid agencies have recently described the desperate shortage of aid, which among other things leads to Palestinians dying of hunger, and it could take several months before the U.S. port project is operational.

"I don't think it makes much sense for the people in Gaza who are starving and don't have access to medicine, clean water and fuel. Especially in the northern part of Gaza, two months is a very long time to wait, says DR's international correspondent, Steffen Kretz, who is in Israel.

"Politically, it might make sense, because it shows an initiative in relation to the humanitarian catastrophe unfolding in Gaza. But it has long prospects, it is not very practical, and in the first two months there is nothing to suggest that it helps people in Gaza, he says.

    Children die of hunger

The situation in Gaza is so desperate that the UN is even warning of famine, which is why emergency aid needs to enter the enclave now, not in two months' time.

Children in Gaza are particularly vulnerable, and some have already died of starvation. Therefore, emergency aid by water or air drops is not enough. This is the opinion of Unicef Denmark's Secretary General, Susanne Dahl.

"It may take some time before they finish at that port and before the aid arrives. The problem is that there is far too long a way to go to the children, and at present one in six children under the age of two suffers from acute malnutrition. Therefore, in the past week, we have unfortunately seen far too many children dying of hunger, says Susanne Dahl.

She points out that it is not only the small amount of aid entering Gaza that is the problem. There is also a huge challenge in distributing aid in the middle of a war zone.

    - Specifically, you can get caught in the crossfire. Shots and bombings continue to be fired up, so distributing aid is very dangerous. Unfortunately, we also see that emergency aid sometimes stops at Israeli checkpoints. It will be delayed or asked to turn back," says Susanne Dahl.

The shortage of aid and, in particular, food is widespread in Gaza. The first children have died of starvation, and the UN warns of famine. Here is a malnourished boy in Rafah in southern Gaza. (Photo: © Mohammed Salem, Ritzau Scanpix)
A temporary ceasefire could ensure distribution around Gaza for a short time. But this is a tragedy, and the first children have already died of starvation. We fear that this could turn into a full-blown famine among the children. A lasting ceasefire is needed, says Unicef Denmark's Secretary General.

    Political dilemma for the West

It is part of Israel's government's strategy to control the flow of aid into Gaza, says Steffen Kretz. In this way, it is hoped to persuade the population to oppose Hamas.

The strategy is to curb the supply of food, water, fuel and medicine to Gaza because it hopes to put pressure on Hamas. The political thinking is that if the people of Gaza get desperate enough, they might rebel against Hamas. So it is Israel that is keeping supplies out of Gaza, Kretz said.

Before the war, 500 trucks carrying aid were entering Gaza every day. Currently, it is only about 100 trucks. This is despite the fact that the trolleys with help are ready just 10 minutes from where they are needed.

This places the West and the European Union, which supports Israel's fight against the terrorist organisation Hamas, in a dilemma. And that's why you see the West trying to find other solutions for the delivery of relief.

"The West is in a political dilemma. It is the United States that supplies the bombs Israel drops on Gaza. It is the West and also the EU that supports Israel, and it is Israel that ensures that not enough aid enters Gaza, Steffen Kretz said.

Israel's government has pointed out that much of the aid entering Gaza falls into Hamas's hands, which is one of the reasons why it is limiting the amount.
