I wouldn't live in China if I was paid for it, but I guess if the choice was between a middle class life in China and a tent site somewhere, surrounded by homeless people, I wouldn't choose the US.

Your average poor American does not live in a tent city. They live in federally subsidized housing or own their own home. Homeless people living in tents has more to do with lack of mental health care and drug addiction than lack of money. You and sabang are just being obtuse.

The reason I would prefer China over the USA, as an early retiree, is quite simple and already stated- money, or more accurately what a fixed amount of money buys you. I'm not going to enter this "better life" debate- because it is entirely subjective, and also heavily influenced by your financial and work situation. I like Asia, and that includes China. Of the western countries, I much prefer Australia- and as a citizen, I enjoy many benefits. So I'm fine.

If you want to get a perspective on life in China, ask an expat who lives there. Isn't that simple? There are literally hundreds of 'Lifestyle vloggers' in Thailand, Australia and so on- Americans in particular seem to be fascinated by the differences between the states and oz. Yet if you show some normal bloke actually enjoying their life in China, it is met by the usual scepticism by the sinophobes. I wonder how many have even been there? M'ehhh.

Would you eat a soup made from cows placenta/ afterbirth in Mai Arse? I have done so in Isaan. Yummy too- but I'm relieved I didn't know what it was until after the event. Point being, you don't have to enjoy eating everything the locals eat to enjoy living there. How do you get on with Isaan pla dek? didn't think so.

Nonsense, idiot- I would hate the cold winters for a start. I would like to visit St Petersburg though, in summer- beautiful city, and a cultural treasure trove. I am told by some people I have met that have lived and worked there (unlike you) that Moscow has quite the nightlife- especially if you have money in your pocket, and a taste for beautiful women of the Caucasian variety. But don't fret- it has a gay scene too.

I would gladly live in China however, if circumstances so determined (highly unlikely).
