    Yesterday’s House Seats - 212 Democrats - 219 Republicans

Former Rep. Tom Suozzi (D) has won back his old seat in the House, giving Democrats a critical pickup that will further narrow the GOP House majority, according to a projection from Decision Desk HQ.

Suozzi defeated Republican Mazi Pilip in the special election to fill the seat vacated by former Rep. George Santos (R), who was expelled from his seat in December in the aftermath of criminal charges being filed against him and the many false claims he made about his background.

The race was seen as an important bellwether heading into the November general election, as New York will be key to Democrats’ strategy to win back control of the House. The 3rd Congressional District is one of five in the state that voted for Biden in 2020 but elected a Republican representative in 2022.

    Today’s House Seats - 213 Democrats - 219 Republicans

Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wisc.), the chair of the House Select Committee on China, said Saturday he will not seek reelection in November.

Why it matters: Gallagher is the fourth Republican committee chair to announce their retirement in 2024 and the second just this week.

What he's saying: "The Framers intended citizens to serve in Congress for a season and then return to their private lives," Gallagher said in a statement.

    • "Electoral politics was never supposed to be a career and, trust me, Congress is no place to grow old. And so, with a heavy heart, I have decided not to run for re-election."

The backdrop: A 39-year-old former Marine who served in the Iraq War, Gallagher has represented his Green Bay-based district since 2017.

    • He is widely viewed as a rising star and was the GOP's desired recruit to challenge Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) this cycle, but he passed on a run.

Between the lines: Gallagher's announcement comes just days after his controversial vote against impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

    • His defection, along with those of Reps. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) and Tom McClintock (R-Calif.) led to the impeachment effort failing.
    • Gallagher has faced significant backlash for his vote from allies of former President Trump — including threats of a primary challenge — for his vote.

The big picture: Gallagher's retirement adds to an already historic rate of House retirements in both parties, but especially among top Republicans.

We will see but important not to nationalize this win too much. His campaign was aimed directly at his constituency which differs to varying amounts nationwide.

Same issues (D vs R) were discussed by each candidate before the election. If it carries over (Nation wide) to November, the Dems have a good chance to win back the House and keep the White House.

    Suozzi’s victory speech.

    In other news…….

Democrats retained their slim majority in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Tuesday after voters elected a former school board member to represent them in a Philadelphia suburb that has been trending more to the left.

Jim Prokopiak’s election to the Bucks County seat will give Democrats a 102-100 majority in the House, which they have sought to defend in four special elections in the past year. A Republican lawmaker’s resignation last week shifted the power back to Democrats, and Prokopiak’s win kept it in place.

He defeated Republican challenger Candace Cabanas and will replace former state Rep. John Galloway, who resigned to serve as a magisterial judge. Cabanas has said previously she plans to run again during the general election.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected appeals from three Republican U.S. House members who challenged fines for not wearing face coverings on the House floor in 2021.

The justices did not comment on leaving in place $500 fines issued in May 2021 to U.S. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Thomas Massie of Kentucky and Ralph Norman of South Carolina.

The mask requirement was part of the House's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the mandate remained in place even after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued guidance noting that “fully vaccinated people can resume activities without wearing a mask or physically distancing.”

The lawmakers showed up on the House floor without masks, even posing for a selfie. The requirement was lifted in June 2021.

Lower courts had refused to disturb the fines, ruling that courts lack the power to review the mask policy.

Lawyers for House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, had urged the court to reject the appeal from fellow Republican representatives, though they noted that Johnson and every other member of the Republican leadership voted against the mask policy.

Rep. Maria Salazar (R-Fla.) this month celebrated delivering $1.4 million to a children’s hospital in her district, even attending a photo op where she handed over massive checks to leadership and staff at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital.

Except Salazar voted against the bill that provided this money.

“The doctors and staff at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital are nothing short of miracle workers, and I am proud to support their work in Congress,” Salazar declared in a Feb. 8 press release. “I am thrilled to have secured over $1.4 million to provide cutting-edge medicine to children and help the hospital confront our nation’s growing mental health crisis.”

But as her own press release states, this money came from the Fiscal Year 2023 Consolidated Appropriations Act ― a bill she opposed. Virtually every House Republican voted against this bill, which provided $1.7 trillion to fund the federal government.

You can see her “no” vote here.

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-Colo.) was a victim of bad timing on Tuesday.

The Colorado congresswoman decided to show off her MAGA bonafides with a post on X, attacking the “Biden Crime Family” as “the most corrupt political family in American history.”

Hours after posting her tweet attacking the Bidens for alleged corruption — accusations that are still unsubstantiated — Boebert’s son, Tyler Jay Boebert, was arrested on 22 separate charges, including four felony counts of criminal possession of ID documents, one felony count of conspiracy to commit a felony and 15 misdemeanor and petty offenses.

Boebert’s estranged husband, Jayson Boebert, was arrested in January for third-degree criminal trespass, obstruction and disorderly conduct in connection with an altercation between the couple at a Colorado restaurant.
