There was never in the whole world a shoot to wound policy if you gonna shoot someone you have to be willing for him to die, all those shoot to kill enquiries were a joke, they aint trying to shoot the gun/bomb out of paddys hand, they had to stop him, the way they are trained is 2 shots per time into the main body mass, the odds are that they would die from two 9mms into the torso, and obviously in the excitement of it all others would also join in the shooting so paddy would get a few more shots in him, I don't know whether you have been really scared before, but imagine your in a group of four and patrolling in northern island, the front guy calls out to paddy who happens to have a gun in his hand as he turns round, the front man starts shooting at him, the other 3 see their front man firing at an armed paddy, paddy is slowly swinging round with his gun, what do you think those other 3 guys are gonna do? they are obviously shocked by the initial firing, guns are loud, they now have a paddy in front of them turning round in what seems slow motion with a gun in his hand, should they then decide which one will shoot to wound? sorry I doubt if that would even enter their minds. if you point a gun at someone you must be willing to accept that they may die, it's like whacking somebody over the head with a hammer, there is a good chance that they may die
