Annex some more of Ukraine in exactly the same way.

The joining NATO/EU or whatever else is irrelevant. Putin wants Ukraine to be part of Russia again. He said so himself in his speech.

What did Russia do when the US claimed ALL of Ukraine including Crimea when it overthrew the elected government in 2014 ? It retained Crimea , where it has had a naval base since the 1700's.

It will be unforgiveable if the West expect Ukrainians to fight to the last man with no hope of rescue and eventual protection, guarantees of EU and NATO membership. As it drags on will be a factor in popularity of Biden and Boris while Macron needs a new mandate in 2 months so desperate for a diplomatic win.

As Troy accurately described tranche by tranche Putin is slicing off his conquest like a slow gobbler moving down the buffet.

May settle for the for lines of status quo ante last week , then all of Donbas and so on and so on.

The US and Nato claimed all of Ukraine in 2014. Joining Nato does not mean independence. Independence would mean not being in Nato or the Russian equivalent CSTO.

From 1991 to 2014, Ukraine was not in the CSTO. It was independent.

The Banderite facist govt that the US constructed to take power in 2014 and accent into Nato, is from the yellow region. Russia would never want that region. The US can park its Agis Ashore missile batteries pointing at Russia in the yellow part.

Here's an article from 2004. With the US's first go at Ukraine.

US campaign behind the turmoil in Kiev | World news | The Guardian

But while the gains of the orange-bedecked "chestnut revolution" are Ukraine's, the campaign is an American creation, a sophisticated and brilliantly conceived exercise in western branding and mass marketing that, in four countries in four years, has been used to try to salvage rigged elections and topple unsavoury regimes.

Funded and organised by the US government, deploying US consultancies, pollsters, diplomats, the two big American parties and US non-government organisations, the campaign was first used in Europe in Belgrade in 2000 to beat Slobodan Milosevic at the ballot box.

Richard Miles, the US ambassador in Belgrade, played a key role. And by last year, as US ambassador in Tbilisi, he repeated the trick in Georgia, coaching Mikhail Saakashvili in how to bring down Eduard Shevardnadze.

The operation - engineering democracy through the ballot box and civil disobedience - is now so slick that the methods have matured into a template for winning other people's elections.

People stuck in the previous century clearly resent the new multipolar world order! But they can do nothing about it. They'll be suffering from reds under the bed until they bitterly pass.

Sure is- but at other times, not so. Russia/China/Iran & Central Asia/ India. No island is gonna beat them down. May as well realise the future.

I'd almost given up on this thread as it had descended into the Detritus level.

But, just when the debate couldn't sink to new depths, Trump weighs in ...

‘Genius,’ ‘Savvy’: Trump reacts to Putin’s moves on Ukraine exactly as you’d expect

    Ukraine war mega thread-screenshot-2022-02-23-16-45-a
    File photo

“I went in yesterday and there was a television screen, and I said, ‘This is genius,’ ” Trump continued. “Putin declares a big portion of the Ukraine — of Ukraine. Putin declares it as independent.

Oh, that’s wonderful. So, Putin is now saying, ‘It’s independent,’ a large section of Ukraine. I said, ‘How smart is that?’ And he’s gonna go in and be a peacekeeper. That’s strongest peace force … We could use that on our southern border.”

He continued to praise Putin a bit later.

“Here’s a guy that says, you know, ‘I’m gonna declare a big portion of Ukraine independent’ — he used the word ‘independent’ — ‘and we’re gonna go out and we’re gonna go in and we’re gonna help keep peace,’ ” Trump said.
“You gotta say that’s pretty savvy. And you know what the response was from Biden? There was no response.”

Germany Can Do Without Russian Gas, Minister Says

However Germany’s power demands could be “compensated” with other energy sources and suppliers, including an accelerated renewables push set out by the government, he said.

They just need to accelerate this plan. The countries long term goal is almost entirely renewable, so the time to do it is now.

Kyiv Calls for Nationwide Emergency, Urges Ukrainians to Leave Russia ‘Immediately’

Ukraine has announced a nationwide emergency and told its citizens to leave Russia immediately, pointing to the threat of a Russian invasion.

The announcements come after Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized eastern Ukraine's two breakaway territories and ordered Russian troops to “maintain peace” there.

Ukraine’s national security and defense council announced a state of emergency in all regions excluding Luhansk and Donetsk, where Kyiv’s forces have been at war with the pro-Russian separatists since 2014.

Its spokesman said the 30-day state of emergency can be extended up to 60 days.

The move, which is one step short of martial law, is subject to the Ukrainian parliament's approval.

The Ukrainian foreign ministry also said it is calling on citizens currently in Russia to leave “due to increased Russian aggression against Ukraine which, among other things, may lead to a significant restriction of the ability to provide consular assistance” to Ukrainians in Russia.

More than 2.5 million Ukrainian citizens are estimated to be living in Russia.

Around the same time, Ukraine’s military said it has started calling up reservists aged 18-60 for up to one year.

Ukraine’s border service also announced temporary restrictions on movements in areas bordering Russia and Belarus.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Tuesday he was considering cutting diplomatic ties with Russia over its recognition of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk people's republics.

Putin signed military cooperation treaties with Ukraine’s pro-Moscow separatists and dispatched so-called “peacekeepers” to Donetsk and Luhansk, while Russian senators green-lighted Putin’s request to deploy troops there.

The United States, which along with its Western allies announced a new package of sanctions on Russia, described those moves as “the beginning of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.”

Russia’s Foreign Ministry said Tuesday it planned to evacuate its diplomatic staff from Ukraine “in the near future” because they had received threats and were under “repeated attacks.”

Several Western embassies have relocated from Kyiv to the city of Lviv near the Polish border, as the U.S. and its allies have for months accused Russia of planning an attack on Ukraine.

Facing Russia Threat, Ukraine Calls Up Reservists

Ukraine on Wednesday began calling up reservists into the armed forces and urged its citizens to leave Russia immediately as the pro-Western country braced for a possible invasion.

The call was issued a day after Russia's upper house of parliament gave President Vladimir Putin permission to send "peacekeepers" into two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine.

Ukraine's armed forces said in a statement on Facebook that reservists between the ages of 18 and 60 would be called up for a period of up to one year.

Ukraine has a reserve force of more than 200,000 that is comprised mostly of military personnel who served in the first years of the country's eight-year war with Russian-backed separatists.

The decree signed by President Volodymyr Zelensky says former officers and non-commissioned personnel "will serve in military units and according to the specialization" that they had in the past.

"If the reservist, for one reason or another prescribed by law, cannot be called up, they must personally present an explanatory document," it added.

"Failure to appear or disregard for the call-up can lead to administrative and criminal penalties," it warned.

The foreign ministry said the growing threat of Russian "aggression" meant that it would be increasingly difficult to provide consular services for Ukrainian citizens in Russia.

Between two and three million Ukrainians are believed to be living in Russia today.

"The foreign ministry urges the citizens of Ukraine to refrain from travel to Russia, and for those in that country to leave its territory immediately," the ministry said.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also reaffirmed his call for world powers to stiffen their sanctions on Russia.

Western powers began to announce new penalties on Tuesday directed mostly against Russian banks.

"To stop Putin from further aggression, we call on partners to impose more sanctions on Russia now," Kuleba said in a tweet.
