For all those opposed to Democratic Socialism, I have a question.

How do you think schools, police, military protection, roads, fire service, environmental protection, border patrol, etc get paid for? Or do you even think about that at all?

Socialism is just government collecting taxes to pay for public services. The Democratic part is that the people vote for representatives to allocate that money where it is needed most (ideally).

It's the base system of the United States right now.

It has drastically been perverted by the wealthy elites who control Congress, but still functions to some modest degree nonetheless.

So, we have a Democratic Socialist system in the US right now. The question, as always, is who pays taxes and who benefits from them?

AOC would like the elites to pay more and the rest of us to benefit more. That's it in a nutshell.

But of course, this would upset the apple cart that has been so carefully constructed by the ones who skim trillions of dollars of tax revenue into their own pockets regularly. I'm talking of ultra wealthy businessmen with generous paying gov't contracts, elites who hide much of their untaxed wealth in offshore accounts, and sweetheart corporate tax loopholes.

A more equitable system is possible, but the current one is so entrenched and well funded it will be a battle to change it.

Bar a military coup you will never change the system but who controls the military so even that fantasy is ruled out. The elites will continue to throw a few crumbs at the masses when they get uppity from time to time to placate them and round and round we go.

Hobbes and Locke would be proud. They both argued for a popular contract or constitution whereby citizens give up some rights to the government for, essentially, one thing -- security. They both knew that people wasted a lot of time and resources when they spent all day guarding their shit. A collective means of security would allow farmers to farm and blacksmiths to black smith. Yep, security, that's it. Now, we have absurd, behemoth governments distributing heating oil, regulating everything from prunes to porn, and feeding children before school. They ration water, control transportation systems, require approval to put a swing set in your back yard, and threaten a death squad of 50 swat members will rush your bedroom if you rip the tag off your mattress.

It's out of control.

In the US -- half of all citizens pay ZERO federal income tax. Not one cent. It's only the top half who pay anything and the top 10% of earners pay about 80% of all federal tax.

To make it MORE equitable, the bottom half would end up MUCH worse off. Poor people really don't have any idea how good they have it.

you've conveniently neglected to mention that they pay state taxes, local taxes and sales tax...and that they pay fees (e.g. driver's license) that are essentially taxes.
you've also neglected to mention the multinationals that makes billions of profit per year but pay nothing in federal income tax. not one cent.

taxes pay for safe roads and bridges, police and firefighters, food and drug inspectors, the education and safety of children, etc....
