Comedy Show with OBL penetrate security in Sydney

    TV show breaches fortress Sydney

Members of an Australian television comedy show have been arrested and charged after breaching the tightest security the city has ever seen. The team from the satirical show The Chaser's War on Everything were stopped within yards of the hotel where US President George W Bush was staying.
The stunt was reportedly only revealed when one of the team, dressed as Osama Bin Laden, got out of the car.
Police handling security for the Apec summit called it a "dangerous stunt".

"We have snipers deployed around the city. They weren't there for show, they mean business, that's what they are there for," Commissioner Andrew Scipione of New South Wales police said.

The sham motorcade involved three large cars and two motorcycles carrying Canadian flags.

They were waved through two police checkpoints on what was one of the busiest days for the city's security forces, as world leaders arrived for this weekend's summit.
Police only moved in when one of the crew emerged from the car wearing a long fake beard and robes, close to the InterContinental Hotel where President Bush is staying.
All 11 members of the crew have been bailed after being charged with entering a secure area. Police are said to be considering further charges.
Makers of the programme, which is broadcast on ABC, said they had never intended to enter the Apec restricted zone in central Sydney.
The crew believed they had been given permission by police to proceed as far as they did, and voluntarily turned round when they thought they were about to enter the restricted area, the makers said in a statement on the ABC website.

Sydney has seen the biggest security operation ever mounted by Australia ahead of the meeting of 21 leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation forum.
A 5km (three-mile) barrier has been erected across the central business district and more than 5,000 police and troops are patrolling the streets.

    I think it was awesome.

BTW, the article is from the bbc.co.uk/news (australia) website.

It was stupid maybe , because it was just a publicity stunt.

On the other hand , with all the kerfuffle I've seen on TV about the 'extraordinary security measures' surrounding this gathering , it might give rise to useful reflection.

Is it really worth virtually shutting down one of the worlds most beautiful cities so that these wankers can carouse and be wined and dined in relative security?
Why don't they just build a purpose built facility in the middle of a desert or something like that, so that real people can get on with their lives and these people can have all the security they want, but not at our expense?

Actually, Mid already mentioned tongue in cheek on another thread sending them to Pine Gap/Alice Springs, where they would have lots of security. But, that wouldn't serve political interests, now would it?

It wouldn't suit political cravings you mean- they'd prefer to see a city centre shackled so they can have their fun in fancy restaurants and so forth, to the detriment and cost of the residents.

They are there for business, not fun. Why wouldn't it be in political interests to hold their convention in a secure environment with a minimum of diversions such as restaurants and harbour trips?

Of course, they don't care because it's our money they are spending. Pollies and their type just love to gorge themselves on the public purse. Do you think there would be as many delegates and their various hangers on at this 'summit' if it was held in a truly secure business focused environment such as, say, Ayers Rock

Another interesting point- why is it assumed without question that someone dressed in Islamic garb is automatically a target for a snipers bullet? At least two of the countries there- Malaysia and Singapore- are Islamic. It's not like they were carrying anything threatening.

For that matter, it is not illegal to drive a car with a Canadian, or any other flag on it.

They were waved through checkpoints. They were not trespassing. They threatened nobody.

Embarrassing the cops and Aussie politicians is not in itself a crime. I could describe it as a public servce actually- exposing flaws in Sydneys marvellous 'shut down the City' APEC security.

Other than perhaps some vague charge of 'causing a public nuisance' I don't see how the pranksters can be validly charged with anything.

The Chasers were more amazed than anyone that they got away with it. They expected to be stopped at the first checkpoint.

They had passes made up that looked a bit like the APEC passes. But they were clearly labelled as INsecurity Passes and had the word APEC replaced with JOKE.

The dumb coppers just waived them through.

In reality, the security forces should have known the Chasers would try something and had them watched from the start.

Both Sabang and Tizme made valid points in my opinion.

The truth is, securioty forces in "our world" can either shooot to kill someone - brazilian dude underground, london - or fear repercussions - case in point, this thread/

Either way, it's all bollocks. Let us live for fucks sake.

We'll be more likely to pinpoint dangerous people ourselves, if it didn't involve risky g'ment imposed lawsuits against us.

LET THE PEOPLE FUCKING DECIDE! WE MIGHT JUST MAKE DECISIONS< OR AT LEAT REACH A CONCENCUS LONG BEFORE THEM INCOMPENTANT EGOTISTS IN GOV'T

Actually I saw a reference somewhere to an 'APEC 2007 act' but can't find it again at the moment. Probably a Patriot Act for Bruces and Shielas. I never read the details but I'm sure there's something in there worth 20 years. The global war on liberty must be fought to the finish !

Yeh, so they did. Thats Australia all over- go to the time and expense of drafting a set of laws and passing them in Parliament for a bluddy conference. Who cares- taxpayers paying for it.

Hey, if Borat can go piss on an entire nation of 300 million and they love him for it, then I guess these guys can do the same in OZ. Wait till Hollywood finds them, then mass exposure. Agents are probably calling already.
