Well, the so-calld pan - European nazi nationalist surge has failed to materialise much beyond a ripple and that mostly comprises Italy and France whining about blacks and Arabs, a doctrine that has little staying power. The important development in the changing fashion of democracy is that the opposition to lumpen nationalist dross is broader but still outnumbers the low end trash. The Brexit party is little more than an accretion of the stupid, the lower middle class bigot and the usual Kipper melange of the thick-headed, the racist, the ignorant and the deluded. The Tory Brexit faction is now courting this demographic in its current parade to slap lipstick on a pig but in truth it is no different to Cameron pandering to the lower end bigot in the 2015 election. It is a mistake this round however, given we now know more want to keep the EU benefits than don't.
The more significant events of late seem to have bypassed the Tory leadership pageant of parading piglet candidates. Bercow has recently announced that he is not now vacating his Speaker's chair and has reiterated the not inconsiderable fact that Parliament has already rejected a no-deal Brexit and the election of May's successor will not alter that. The canvassing gibberish of several candidates, that they will return to the EU and re-negotiate a replacement agreement that accords with the lumpen end's dismal comprehension of reality, has been dismissed out of hand by the EU, several times.
It is therefore clear that there will only be one outcome this summer, either a GE or a second referendum to decide whether Britain leaves the EU without a deal or to abandon Brexit entirely. I suspect the Tories have not the bottle or appetite for a fight at the hustings that may well see them lose seats to the LibDems and face defeat to a LibDem/Labour coalition. So, it seems that a referendum is on the cards.
The £ is now trading at 40.26 baht and with the increasing volatility around the world and in Britain it is likely to continue south.

I recently visited three long established and successful British pubs in Pattaya and discussed matters with their owners. None can recall a worse time in the past twenty years and all attributed the significant drop in trade in what was their high season to the exchange rate. The lower end whoremonger and the married couples returning for their annual visit to the family up country trade has fallen off a cliff. The additional demographic sea change in tourism, from Westerners to Indian/Chinese/Asean/ME nationals, means that there may not be any alternative but closure. I understand that the Indians have their own bars now in Walking Street doing a roaring trade.

Brexit is certainly Ebola in Britain but it's contagion means the end of British bars here in Pattaya.

Quite sad really but nothing lasts forever, except of course stupidity as so vividly demonstrated by the Brexit fuckwits posting here.

Jesus Chugger you do go on. So the your consumer "Poll" has uncovered that the exchange rate is causing people with UK sourced funds problems. in 2016 it was c50 and granted now c40 but what about the drop from 2005ish of 71THB - the pound had been going one way for a long time.

My dear Fuknumdick, you seem to struggle with basic comprehension of phenomena that most understand from a relatively early age. Is the impediment a congenital affliction or simply a matter of cognitive dysfunction caused by the sound of too much road-digging with pneumatic drills and the like? Or is it merely a matter of poor education? Do tell.

    Let me try and explain.

Things happen, they happen a lot in many different ways, in little ways a lot of times or they happen big time but not so many times. Many times things just happen all the time but we don't notice because we are more concerned about bigger things that happen big time. But they all matter, most times. A little thing can become a very big thing in the end. We call this attaining critical mass, but you might have known it better when you were digging in your dirty water-filled trench as the "tipping point".

Between Sept 2005 and Set 2015, a period of ten years ( what we call in the trade a "decade" ), the sterling baht exchange rate fell from 75 to 55. This decline was marked by a steep fall recording the advent of the credit crunch and concomitant recession that began in 2008 but then assumed a more gradual downward trajectory reflecting political and economic events in both countries and the wider world settling nicely at a consistent 50-55 rate . However, with the announcement of the Brexit vote and the development of the lower end's support for it, it again began to fall below a level maintained at 48-50 until the final vote when it then fell in the next five months to a new low of 42-44 since when it has fluctuated at the same level until this year when it fell to the lowest value of 40, where we are at now. In terms of purchasing power and the effect on British consumers here in Thailand the tipping point was 42 baht.

At below 42, it became too expensive for the average Brit/Thai couple to both send remittances home to the Thai family in the boonies and to visit the country on the regular and more frequent basis we saw in the past.

And if there is a new referendum/GE that precipitates a WTO Brexit and an economic border in NI, then we shall see £ at $1.10 and 33-35 baht. The tipping point will have by then been surpassed and in new territory we call "in the shit".

    Understand now?

the closure of British bars in Pattaya is hardly a bad thing, I would say it's a positive thing actually

fewer chavs and fewer British criminals monopolizing the place in Pattaya and Bangkok is definitely a big improvment,

    thank you Brexit

expat pub and bar owners are rarely savvy businessmen, mostly they are chancer geezers whose only aim is to to relieve their customers of the maximum amount of cash in the shortest possible time in order to line their pockets and those of their wives. if they want to reverse the drop in turnover then they should address the real cause, which is the grossly overpriced alcohol and food they serve.

the "there'll always be an england" type of ageing expat sitting around in a faux brit pub supping ale and ogling bints all night are a dying breed anyway, and if these bars are losing trade then they should do what every other struggling business in the world has to do to survive, either adapt and change their business model or go under.

if the bobble head bars are busy then they must be doing something right, the indian rupee has also fallen against the baht over the past year.

Actually, I was not referring to the Brit skanky beer bars or hole-in-the-wall non-aircon bars with the odd desultory drinker among the gaggle of Isaan pug-nosed stumpy slappers, they are the well funded long established air-conned bar/restaurants that also offer budget accommodation viz Jamieson's, The Sportsman, Rosies, Pig & Whislte, the Robin Hood Tavern ( old Shenanigans ) and the Queen Vic. If the current market prevails, or worsens, then these places will be gone.

good point tax, the old expat community from the years 2000 are gone, like another kind of was gone in the 90s

it's just this cycle in Thailand is faster,

the future of Pattaya will be Russian anyhow, slowly and surely they will invade the place

Tax, you are not a drinker and you know evidently fuck all about the Brit pub business scene in Thailand. Most of the established pubs I am referring to are owned and operated by folk with a background in licensed premises or were established business owners in the catering trade.

Given that most are still operating after 20 years in the trade and operate from the same premises I rather think that is suitable testament to their acumen.

You silly little Northern whippet fucker.

a quick look at the menu and drink prices for the robin hood and its no wonder these places are struggling.

If the current market prevails, or worsens, then these places will be gone.
well, if the customer base is not large enough to support them all, then one or two will go under and the remaining ones will take up the slack.

its survival of the fittest, the ability to adapt to a changing environment.

ever wonder why aldi and lidl are so successful in the uk and tesco, sainsburys etc are struggling?

Most of the Russian traders in Wongamat went bankrupt in the post ruble collapse in 2015/16 and their leases sold on to the Chinks. The Russian surge that enveloped Pattaya from 2006 onwards has long since receded leaving a steady stream of families visiting in the long Siberian winter until May when they disappear. The market is changing all the time but a noticeable difference this year is the reduction of Chinese tour groups. Fuckers seem to be staying away which is good news. They were buying condos by the yard but the recent Chinese clampdown on exchange controls for their people has slowed things right down.

The issue is not a lack of motivation by Brits wishing to spend winter time here or to retire, it is simply because they cannot now afford it because Brexit has fucked the exchange rate. It was tolerable when it was 50 baht but at 40 it is simply not tenable.

    It isn't fucking rocket science.

Prices have not increased greatly in the past decade, it's the fucking exchange rate that has made it difficult for Brits. If you divide most prices by 72-75 its a bargain, whether it is a 5 star hotel, the Hilton restaurant, or shagging dirty Noi and her sister but now drinking outside of happy hours or dining in a decent international restaurant is approaching or even surpassing London prices.

Brit businesses are therefore holding prices down but in the end if the numbers are low then there can be no profit.

Brexit has killed the rate and reduced the demographic, and there it is.

Tax, you are not a drinker
of course i am a drinker, and i eat too. i just rarely drink alcohol.

i occassionally visit these places in bangkok and in hua hin, although in hua hin, thankfully there are not so many of them.
sometimes one just needs a plate of proper thick cut chips and a recent daily mail to read whilst enjoying them.

but imho, its just as enjoyable, and far cheaper, to spend an evening socialising with friends at a medium priced thai run restaurant, be it air con or outdoors, where the alcohol is cheaper, the choice of food better and the atmosphere much more interesting than the same again brit pubs with their customer base of florid loudmouthed holidaymakers and the worse for wear cackling gimlet eyed bints that often seem to accompany them or the boozy local expats with their trophy wives pouring their beers and mopping their brows and balding pates.

i know relatively few brits in thailand, and mostly hang out with french and germans, and they, like me, would much rather spend an evening at a restaurant than a brit style boozer. the euros know how to drink, they dont knock it back in the desperate way the brit does, pint after pint, bottle after bottle. the euros are so much more civilised than that.

Given that most are still operating after 20 years in the trade and operate from the same premises I rather think that is suitable testament to their acumen.
and given that you say these establishments are struggling then i would say that they are slow to adapt to the changing conditions and their acumen must be lacking somewhat.

    Are you bisexual Tax?

Incidentally, the only way one can react to the current trading conditions for the Brit pub owner is to cease trading.

It's hardly likely to convert itself into a fucking sushi bar or pizza parlour, you twat.

The market is evaporating for Brits. And there it is.

Incidentally, sitting, sweating your balls off among the Thai in some open-air cockroach infested clip joint eating lukewarm rice and tenth rate quality meat and fish drenched in the same fucking four marinades/sauces is fine for a novelty evening and Lonely Planeteers but as a habitual practice its a ghastly prospect. Bloody beer is warm and when you complain they bring some fucking nam kaeng. Bloody savages.

So Pattaya is (allegedly) getting too expensive for British drinkers. So fucking what. Big fucking deal. Find a cheaper alternative; either somewhere cheaper to pickle your liver or something cheaper to drink. Not fucking rocket science.

Nev, you are getting drawn in to Buttchuggers endless rants too. He goes out to a few bars and gets his ears bent by his singlet wearing mates and tosses and turns all night until he can stand it no more, rises and spews paragraphs of the same repetitive obvious drivel.

actually most of those places are financed by boiler room boys and petty British criminals to "clean" their cash from Spain and England for their underground business

it's usually their drinking place, they don't need the profit, and 20 years ago they were already complaining that things were bad, but at the end it didn't really matter, and they are still here

and is weatherspoons pattaya any better?

    poor old s.a.

the former westminster based civil servant now exiled in pattaya, stuck whimpering amongst the tattooed dross, the chinese spitters, the sweating indians, the screeching whores, the deafening motorcycles, the faux brit and irish pubs, the semen drenched blow job bars and happy ending emporia, the broken pavements, the flooded streets and with an ocean of liquid sewage on one side and the pollution belching industrial dystopia of chonburi on the other and with a collapsing currency, ruinously expensive health insurance legislation on the horizon and the increasingly onerous requirements of the immigration department all bearing down on him like an out of control express locomotive driven by a wild eyed somchai the future does indeed look grim.

Firstly, I'd enjoy these two in a nice threesome...

Secondly, a Northerner, not part of the Londonite petite bourgeois, to lead a blue collar Conservative party - good stuff.
