    Was Jesus a Muslim?

I watched a show on telly the other night called The Muslim Jesus. It explored the similarities between the Quoran & the Bible in regards to some of the characters found in it. Having previously been fairly ignorant as to what the Quoran contains (& only really knowledgable of the Bible as far as it gets rammed down your throat) I was quite surprised to notice they are pretty much the same.

I would have thought the Quoran was about raining holy fire down on infedels & what have you, but it was basically the same characters as the bible, playing different roles.

For example - Mary was the mother of Jesus. This is undisputed. In the Bible, when he is born there are three wise men bearing gifts in a stable. In the Quoran, he is born in the desert under a tree & Mary is alone.

Mary takes Jesus to see the top Muslims guys & at first they are pissed that Mary has had a kid with no apparant father, but then Jesus speaks (as new born baby) & tells them he's the son of God & everybody's happy.

Jesus spends his life going round doing miracles & general Jesus type shit, pretty much in the same way as both sides say. The real difference is how Jesus dies.

Christians say he was crucified, died for our sins & all that.

Muslims say Judas was crucified after some slieght of hand by God that turned Jesus into him & that Jesus was whipped off to heaven.

Mohammed is buried wherever it is, I can't remember the name now, but did you know there is an empty grave, next to Mo's, that is reserved for when Jesus comes back to earth & dies again?

I find the connections between other characters, such as Abraham, Cain & Able & a whole host of who's who in both books to be facinating.

Here is the thing - in the bible, God lets Jesus die & in a particularly nasty way. In the Quoran, he whips him away in peace & all that. The Muslims say that is what God would have done because he is a loving God & doesn't like to see pain or whatever. So why, now, are Muslims all over the world blowing themselves up & such in the name of a 'peaceful' God? And the bloodthirsty Christians are generally some of the most pleasant people on the planet (besides Memock, whos skin starts to sizzle when he picks up a bible?)

Yes, there are some connections. Obviously it was the archangel Gabriel (don't know if he has the same name in english) who told Mohammad teh words of the Quran.

Looking into this on wicki and I was surprised by the similarities too. Most non muslims I would bet have a totally different impression of the book.

If you are really interested in this stuff you should try reading 'Jesus for the Non-Religious' by Bishop John Shelby Spong. It's very interesting. He does a literal analysis of the 4 gospels Mark, Matthew, Luke and John and the various other writings of the first few decades to try and find out exactly who Jesus was. There are some interesting conclusions. Joseph is almost certainly a fictional character. Mary was probably a single mother of dubious virtue The nativity story is an invention to satisfy the Jewish scriptures of the Old Testament (if you were christian you might remember many readings ending with '...in accordance with the scriptures'). Large parts of the bible were copied from the Torah because it had to be convincing for the Jewish audience. Large parts of the Koran are copied straight from the Bible for the same reason. It goes on...

You lost me at this part. How many Muslim nations have illegally invaded an(other) sovereign state(s) recently?

I think you misunderstood the show. Saying Jesus was a Muslim is like saying he was a Christian or a member of the RSPB.

Mohammed invented Islam based on the influences of Judeo-Christianity. Everyone knows that, it was a question regularly asked on 'University Challege' with Bamber Gascoigne.

They don't have time to invade another nation, they are to busy blowing up their friends and neighbors or finding other ways to kill them.
Shooting Rockets at Israel and doing other silly shit, like hiding behind civilians and getting someone else to kill em.

There are many similarities between Jesus's life, character and teachings and the Buddha as well.

^ Except that the other religions have an imaginary GOD figure and Buddhism has no god, only a way to live your life.

Tell that to the majority of Buddhists as they give offerings to their idol and pray for lottery numbers.

Absolutely. I'm not sure if Jesus would buy into the jihads and public executions encouraged in the Koran. There was a powerful little essay by Arthur Schopenhauer in his 'Essays and Aphorisms', I think it was called 'Of Religion'. It tied Jesus and Buddhism together very logically. I developed a more positive view of both religions after reading it years ago. Some people even feel that Jesus was guided by Buddhist missionaries during his early adulthood.

Out of interest where, exactly, does it encourage jihads and public executions in the Koran?

And how does that compare to the 'eye for an eye', 'stonings for harlotry' of the Old Testament in any event?

Yes but it's a real feat for Jesus of Nazareth to be a Muslim 6 centuries before Mohamed!

Many similarities between loads of them...make what you will of it but Agni, Balder, Krishna, Hercules, Samson, Jonah, Osiris, Bacchus, Mithra, Hermes, Buddha, Jesus, Quetzalcoatl, Codom, Prometheus, Zoroaster, Perseus, Laotse, Fo Hi, Horus and Rameses all are gods or figureheads which had gods or godlike figures for fathers, and each of their mothers were virgins; almost all their births were announced by stars and voices declared that a blessing had come to earth. All are said to have fasted forty days, nearly all were followed and worshipped by wise men and met a violent death. Tyrants sought to destroy each in his infancy, and all were born in December, on the 25th day of the month. All rose from the dead.

Must be coincidences running a bit wild.

"164 Jihad Verses in the Koran -- Passages in the Quran about Islamic Holy War" compiled by Yoel Natan

164 verses from the Quran that deal with jihad.

Like any religion Islam demands conformity to its beliefs. However its beliefs are not that different from other major religions. It is in the interpretation of verses and the use out of context of them that the danger lies. The radical Imams are the real threat from within modern Islam as are the cult leaders of many modern day pentecostal Christian churches. Both of these examples are more concerned with extending their power base at the expense of others be it by law, by economics or by bomb.

Blind faith in anything will get you killed.
