Top White House aide Karl Rove has said he will resign at the end of August.

"I just think it's time," Mr Rove said in an interview for the Wall Street Journal, adding that he was quitting for the sake of his family.

Mr Rove is a senior political adviser to President George W Bush and has worked with him for more than a decade.

As Mr Bush's chief strategist, he is seen as instrumental in delivering two presidential and several congressional election victories for the Republicans.

The two men began working together when Mr Bush first announced his intention to run for office as governor of Texas in 1993.

But Mr Rove has always been a controversial figure and has faced accusations of underhand tactics against Democrat opponents since his teenage years.

Last month, the US Senate issued a subpoena against him as part of an investigation into the sacking of eight federal prosecutors, but Mr Bush ordered him not to testify, citing executive privilege.

Mr Rove was also investigated in connection with the exposure of CIA agent Valerie Plame, though prosecutors decided he should not face any charges.

There's another thread started by somebody about this in Domestic Issues.

Rove is basically an ELECTION STRATEGIST.

    His job is done.

It's time for him to move on, into the private sector, doing other gigs.

You will see more resignations in the last 1 1/2 years of Bush.

    People plan ahead.

Wishful thinking mate, said pretty much the same about Clinton in his last few years and he got the impeachment vote to boot.

yep this is clearly a US Domestic issue if there ever was one.

This is a Rove tactic: Allowing the pathological Bush haters to make themselves look stupid.

Snow (Whom I don't like), is leaving for financial reason he says. $163,000 is not enought for his family and kids in school, yadda, yadda.

Folks often leave administration within the last year and a half.

    No reason to stay.

But still, I think not all liked being associated with such an administration.
