None of it would have happened if Putin hadn't protected Assad from the outset.

He's basically rewarded a dictator for waging war on his own people.

The only losers are the Syrian people.

As for "influence gain", the Syrian regime have always had the backing of Iran - they are fellow Shi'ites, and Iran have always needed Syria to funnel arms and support to Hezbollah.

And Russia had its only Mediterranean base there, too.

So what have they "gained" exactly?

Again more or less ditto, though I would guess Israel is always nervous. While Putin outplayed Obama throughout (if not done on the nod) to push the buttons in that region, he also knows that if the wrong type of forces get too close to Israel they will not hesitate to strike across borders with full support of a Trump admin. Wouldn't be my first blunder, but I don't think he wants a nose to nose considering he has already achieved through the Obama term what he could not have more than hoped a few years ago.
