Americans of high-school age are 82 times more likely to die from a gun homicide than 15- to 19-year-olds in the rest of the developed world.

After today’s massacre in Texas, the state’s lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, suggested that the problem may be that high schools have too many doors. “Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe [the shooter] would have been stopped.”
At other moments, we’re told that the problem is that we need to do a better job guessing which troubled teens may prove murderous at some point in the future, or dealing with the excesses of masculinity, or possibly the crisis of meaning and identity in the secularizing modern world. As always, though, there is a simpler and more powerful explanation of why there has been no similar school shooting in Germany since 2009; or in Canada since 2016; none in the United Kingdom since 1996—while conversely, more young Americans have died in school shootings in 2018 than in all the nation’s combat operations all over the world.*

Louisa toddler dead after 4-year-old brother thought gun was a toy

LOUISA COUNTY, Va. -- A Louisa County toddler died Tuesday after he was accidentally shot by his older brother.
The two-year-old boy, identified by the sheriff's office as Tyson Aponte, was fatally shot in the chest when his four-year-old brother picked up a gun and fired it, according to Major Donald A. Lowe with the Louisa County Sheriff's Office. The older child thought the gun was a toy, Lowe added.
"It's of paramount importance to make sure your guns are secured and out of the reach of children and everything," Major Lowe said. "At least have them unloaded or a safety lock on them, whatever you have to do to keep them from being discharged accidentally."
The children's mother was at the home off Shannon Hill Road, near the Louisa County-Goochland County line, when the shooting occurred Tuesday morning.
"It will be thoroughly investigated," Major Lowe said. "Our heart breaks for this family... they're devastated, naturally, so we want to do everything we can to help them."
Neighbor Linda Eddy said she's known the Aponte family for more than a decade.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on a felony terrorism charge after he was accused of panicking shoppers by donning a mask and toting a replica AK-47 assault rifle through a Las Vegas mall, police said Friday.
