I still love it but it seems the operators are taking the piss. Ridership is up as we all know - but no extra trains or carriages/cars are added. The result is sardine can like travel. I now consider taxis again.

Gota be Joking mate, if not outside peak hours which there are few off the roads are grid locked.
Fuk that.
At least its not the baht bus where sardines are squashed to fish maw and there's not even room for gropers
I think they had plans to double the length of the trains. That was until the 7/7 terror attacks in London (or simular).
Bunged on shelve and just keep cramming them in, hoping no one notices.
There is definitely an extra carriage on the Silom line. The train now extends the full length of the platform where as before there was a space at both ends.
platform canna take any more ?
Tom, I suspect that you are going to have to wait a very long time. I do kind of feel for you I had the same problem in london when living just outside zone one in chalk farm... in the end I gave up and walked to and from work, primrose hill, regents park, euston, kings cross, faringdon road with its "quaility chop shop.... the progressive working class caterer" and the office.... never regretted it.
First they need to recognize they are loosing money by not buying the trains/coaches, can take years
then they need to work out if they have the capacity for expansion oin the rail and stations, how much its going to cost
then you hit budgeting cycles.... which can be anywhere between 2-4 years
but for you the news is worse. I suspect that the skytain operator is not going to invest any money in the skytrains until the legality of their operating contract is resolved. And these things can take decades.... rather like that pile of toxic waste known as bangkoks new fire engines and boats.
Still if you are lucky I guess they might hire some uniformed people with white gloves to push you into the sardine.... sorry train.

During peak hours, motocye taxi's are the fastest way to go if you're not carrying a lot of stuff. Wear a backpack and keep those arms and legs in!
What annoys me about the BTS/MRT just as i get to the bottom or top of the escalator the train doors close and i end up waiting for the next bloody one.
i'd rather be stuck in a traffic jam in my car listening to my music than being in a full BTS train trying not to hyperventilate because everyone's in my space.
I get pissed off on the MRT because the quality of eye candy is much lower compared to the BTS. That combined with not being able to look out the windows makes for a boring journey.
Another claustrophobic person. Mine was brought on by living here. I prefer the BTS at anytime other than rush hour though. Just cant take an hour of not moving in a car.Originally Posted by armstrong

A new line is under construction at PakNahm. I passed it the other day going to the immigration office.
I have a problem with the escalators and stairs on the BTS thing.
Why didn't they install little wanking cubicles at the bottom of them?
The BTS is only rammed at peak Times, outside that its OK, I plan my moves outside peak. Easy sorted.
On the other hand I love rush hour because I can cross the roads without fear of getting run over.
Love grid lock.
I prefer to take the Metro whenever possible. Never rode the Skytrains, as I hear they are more crowded then the subways.
Still taking a Taxi during Bangkok rush hour (which is almost all day long) makes for a long and sometimes frustrating trip. I really feel for the Taxi drivers who do that all day long, for relatively little money.
Private car is not much better, unless the driver really knows the best routes to take. Even then, you really have to plan ahead.
Locally, I like to use tuk-tuks (but always agree upon a price before getting in).
That's really all just part of life in the big city (which I try to avoid, unless visiting in-laws).

Its packed all the time, they really should provide more carriages.
The ticketing arrangements, fare structure, and the layout of some of the stations are a masterclass in illogical thinking.
It is a credit to the thai though that neither the stations nor the rolling stock have been defaced by graffiti and that the interiors of the carriages show few signs of wear and tear after ten years use.
Agreed ! It really is a credit to them. Here in Brisbane, Australia, when I got on a train recently it appeared that EVERY window had names or some stupid word scratched on them. It seems they use small pieces of sandpaper to do this.
Only to be used off peak.
Used it a lot when it first opened. Almost never now, 4 stops or less.
Two people travelling together is usually cheaper and a damn sight more pleasant in a taxi.
