    Fred Thompson

Here's a name that's been mentioned a few times here in TD who deserves his own thread. Especially because if he does throw his hat in the ring for the Republican nomination, he'll win.

    Fred Thompson

    "He’ll win for three reasons:
    • He’s a southerner with conservative credentials in national government service
    • He’s a personality in an age of personality-driven politics
    • He will out-presence his opponents"

    He'll be perfect.
As an old movie star, he is familiar with being directed.

Good OP because there is a large field of potential GOPers that can run that haven't declared, and perhaps not even started exploratory committees.

I don't see anyone in the GOP at the moment that provides a spark.

And the election is still 19 months away.

The only potential drawback is the fixation on raising big money.

2004 cost $1 bn, double what it cost in 2000 and 20 times what it cost
    a generation ago.

In 1933 to win, the Democrats spent $1,638,177.58, to lose, the Republicans
    spent $2,670,652.69.

US must have some real idealists spending that much to become the leader of the country.
Surely there must be some way for them to recoup the money spent..
I wouldn't take the risk though, just imagine calculating 8 years for ROI and not being reelected after the first period.

    No, I pass.

What type of cash did you think the Bush family "earned" during his dictatorship?

Well, for a so-called 'nobody', 'ol Fred has moved into third place behind Rudy and John Mcain. BTW, Fred Thompson is the guy that plays the prosecuter on that TV show in the states 'Law & Order'.

^ Fred Thompson is definitely not a 'nobody.'

And I see McCain slithering down, more and more.

considering the mess GWB is going leave behind, and the other challenges that his successor will face, i'd like to think that america will be able to come up with a more qualified person than a TV actor.

Considering the mess Jimmah left behind, it's amazing that a former TV actor - who turned out to be the best President we've had in living memory - was able to reduce double-digit inflation, bring down the Berlin Was etc., etc, eh?

A lot of points in this article: immigration, entitlements, protecting the border, etc.

Fred Thompson predicts immigration reform bill will fail

    By BILL THEOBALD
    The Jackson Sun

CHICAGO - The immigration reform bill worked out late last week by Senate Republicans and Democrats likely will fail, former senator and possible presidential candidate Fred Thompson said here Sunday.Thompson, speaking at the National Restaurant Association annual show, said the bill will not win the support of the American people because they don't trust senators' promises to block illegal immigrants from crossing the Mexican border into the U.S.

"Nobody believes them. It goes to the bigger issue of the lack of credibility our government has these days," said Thompson, who was greeted with hoots and applause from the 2,300 convention attendees who filled a ballroom at the

    McCormick Place convention center.

Thompson also was harshly critical of China, saying the military and economic threat the country poses is among the critical issues - along with untamed growth in entitlement spending - that are not being dealt with while the U.S. is fixated on the war in Iraq.

"I call it 'The Day After Iraq,' " Thompson said. "It's not a pretty picture."

After GWB and Iraq, you would have to be a fool to seek the Republican nomination. America is going to vote in a Democrat, no matter who they are.

Wouldn't be too sure about that.
This latest Immigration Bill fiasco could save the Republicans.

    ^ I agree with Sir Burr's comment.

The pendelum has swung to the Ds.

At this point, the Ds can just play it to the Center.

    House, Seanate, and President.

Play to the Center. "Support the troops" (but plan to an end.) Fiscal management, talk. The big spending, dropping the ball on immigration, and foreign policy all add up for knocking out the GOP.

    D season is here.

Except that I don't think a majority of Americans are willing to take the chance with Hillary.

Rudy's a fraud. McCain is too senile to govern.

Perhaps another actor is what we really need.

The demographics have changed enough for Hillary to be serious.

I think she'll be the nominee. (If Gore entered it'd be interesting.)

After GWB, Hillary can pretend to play the center. The DNC machine is working and has plenty of money in the campaign chest.

    IMHO, of course.

We have a way to go.

i don't think hillary will get through the primaries specifically because dems know she's a risk in the general election.......she might still get the nomination, but wacky christians won't come out in november specifically to vote against obama, edwards, or gore in the way that they would against hillary.

the chances of a gore/obama ticket seem more likely with each passing month.....and i can't think of any republican ticket that could beat them.

but this thread is about a guy who likes to play make believe for a living, and now wants to pretend to be president.

btw, apparently he was in the pocket of big pharma during and after the time he was pretending to be a senator.

I see your point. But I do think Hillary will end up with it.

As I try to think like much of the American public, I think they'll buy her Center messages

The lovely Xtian right, and in particular the Evangelicals may very well stay home in larger number because of all of the candidates running.

Not one of the them is really with them....although they are needed.

Agree, no one could beat them, IMO.

But Gore will have to run (which he may).

And give much of the spotlight to a popular VP, which Prez's don't like to do.

    True.

Fred (aka, Elmer Fudd) is a dud as far as a serious candidate.

If the Republicans have to pick an actor, then Arnies the man (with a slight rule change).

    Too controversial within the party.
