They mortared us a few times but it was not really that bad.
Each of us has an opinion of decent respect and i stand by what i say that a British newsreader should show just that on a poignant day.
Veterans around the world have my respect, though have they been given the respect by there govts.?
Lest we forget possibly time to forget.

Governments have eroded enough freedom of choice. It's one of the main reasons I left the UK. Better we defend the few choices we have left.
Heart of Gold and a Knob of butter.
Point taken, she chose to sit in front of nation without showing respect.Originally Posted by chassamui

No more on this thread for me as i dont want to piss people off with boring shite.
We can no longer rely on our national government to do 'the right thing'. UK Blair is an example of all that was/is wrong with current leaders. Parliament alone should not be permitted, on majority, to take a nation into a war on foreign lands.
They quite wrongly believe, having won an election, that they have the nations backing whatever they decide. They do not.
On such an important issue as war, the people need to decide. We have evolved, we are no longer followers, we need to call the fate of our service personnel.
Their lives/safety should be paramount. Afghanistan/Iraq? 10 years on, yes, more years than the 2 World Wars put together. So what exactly has been achieved?
Pretty much bugger all, other than the death of around 8,000 troops if governments wish to call death an achievement. The innocent civilian lives in those countries are far, far more.
It really is time to call a halt to political whims. Defend your nation by all means but think twice what foreign policies bring
I would agree with what you have said, provided all voters can see and listen to the horror of war for themselves.
Allow those who have witnessed genocide to tell their story.
Let the man who saw his best mate have his face shot off in a shell scrape in the Falklands tell them how he felt.
Bring them face to face with women and children who have been bombed and shot at.
Then let them decide.
Way past time but won't happen. We will always be reminded of our glorious wars and the warriors who participated. I've no problem if folks want to participate in Remembrance but those who don't or have opinion against the "expected" norm have the right to do so.Originally Posted by Yasojack
Or unpatriotic. Amazing given folks like you who served have to endure such BS from a bunch of sheeple who haven't a clue. There are many vets who relish the attention, parades and the like but far more who like you, did their stint, quietly went on with life.Originally Posted by Davis Knowlton

She is a news reader/journo, her job (ideally) is to present factual news not coloured by her or anyone else's opinions or bias. It's not like she was wearing a swastika pin instead of a poppy.
Nothing wrong with that and certainly preferable to the jingoistic punditry that US "News" media has devolved into.
I always bought the most expensive pin on Remembrance Day, ANZAC Day, Legacy Week etc. Sometimes several. I never wore them though, it's not a competition to show how grateful you are in public.
Firing ammunition on behalf of politicians furthering what they believe to be the nation's interests, but in truth mostly resolves to their own, usually, base reasons not entirely unrelated to personal gain, aggrandizement and political survival, is actually no big deal. It's no accident that our fodder is generally taken from the ranks of the stupid, the uneducated and feckless. Their overall inferiority makes them that much more malleable and compliant in accepting orders to act unthinkingly. Scratch any nazi storm trooper and you'll find a reasonable chap just happy to belong and get his day's rations.most soldiers are there because they're, well, there. Sensible folk have much better things to do with their lives rather than risking themselves for anything as pointless as jingoistic nationalism, national hubris or adventurism. Which is why of course we have conscription.
Just as well all this silly sentimentalism is only limited to one day a year. If it carried on for much longer, we'd probably all be sick as parrots.
but you, like most here, have never lived through a time when your country has been threatened with invasion and all that that entails for the population.
is it not in a nations interest to defend its territory and people from the invader.
would you allow your home and land to be invaded by outsiders and do nothing except submit to their will, or would you, like the brave men who died for our freedoms, stand up and resist.
your time in blighty seems to be turning you into a rather mediocre pub politician, an empty vessel with a thesaurus and little else, the old geezer nursing a pint of mild, ranting in the corner of the snug to an audience of one.
your hackneyed anti establishment rants are such old hat, even that prick russell brand makes a better fist of it than you.
true, but there are wars, and then there are wars.
