Boston officials overreact to marketing campaign...

Boston officials livid over ad stunt - Yahoo! News

Livid about a publicity campaign that disrupted the city by stirring fears of terrorism, Boston officials vowed to prosecute those responsible and seek restitution, while others mocked authorities on Thursday for what they called an overreaction.

Officials found a slew of blinking electronic signs adorning bridges and other high-profile spots across the city Wednesday, prompting the closing of a highway and part of the Charles River and the deployment of bomb squads.

The 38 signs were part of a promotion for the Cartoon Network TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force," a surreal series about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball. The network's parent is Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc.

^ This is a sign of a country gone whacko.

As a citizen, I saw this in recent years.

Should we laugh, brush it off, take it serious, or lament?

    This I don't know.

But I think that by living in South East Asia I have more sanity.

Sorry for adding this but I felt like I had to:

Asked what they had wanted to be as adults when they were children, 22 percent of people surveyed said firefighter, 17 percent said princess and 16 percent said professional dancer. An equal number of people — 14 percent — wanted to be cowboy or president.

BOSTON - A judge ordered two men held on bond Thursday for allegedly placing electronic advertising devices around the city, stirring fears of terrorism and shutting down parts of Boston. Peter Berdovsky, 27, and Sean Stevens, 28, were held on $2,500 cash bond each after they pleaded not guilty to placing a hoax device and disorderly conduct.
Officials found 38 blinking electronic signs promoting the Cartoon Network TV show "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" on bridges and other high-profile spots across the city Wednesday, prompting the closing of a highway and the deployment of bomb squads. The surreal series is about a talking milkshake, a box of fries and a meatball. The network is a division of Turner Broadcasting Systems Inc.

    Been done before I think.........

    * On October 30, 1938, Martians invaded Earth---or at least thousands of Americans thought they did. That night, people gathered around their radios, as people today gather around their televisions, to tune in to a popular program on CBS Radio. The show that night was a dramatization of The War of the Worlds, a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells about an invasion from Mars. Actor and director Orson Welles (above) and his theater group produced the show, which aired coast to coast.

    * In adapting the novel for a radio drama, Welles made an important change: The play was written and performed so that it sounded like a live news broadcast about an alien invasion. As the play unfolded, dance music was interrupted by fake news flashes reporting that a "huge flaming object" had dropped on a farm near Grover's Mill, N.J. Other news bulletins followed, reporting an all-out Martian invasion. At one point in the broadcast, an actor playing a newscaster frantically described the emergence of aliens from a spacecraft. "Good heavens, something's wriggling out of the shadow like a gray snake," he said. "Now it's another one and another.... I can hardly force myself to keep looking at it...."

    * Unfortunately, many listeners missed the announcement at the beginning of the broadcast explaining that the show was fictional. Some listeners became so transfixed by the drama that they didn't think to tune in to other radio stations to verify the "attacks" Widespread panic erupted, especially in the Northeast, where the "invasions" occurred.

    * Thousands of terrified listeners fled their homes for safety; doctors called police stations to volunteer aid to the injured. One Pittsburgh woman was so scared that she tried to swallow poison rather than die at the hands of aliens. Her husband saved her just in time.
    Lord, deliver us from e-mail.
