Bang Khun Thian police were called to a condominium in Ekachai Soi 88 in Bangkok on Saturday after reports that a foreigner had shot himself.
In the sixth floor room on a bed they found 82 year old Thomas Edward Bacon (name transliterated from Thai) with a single gunshot wound to the throat from a .38 gun.
On a table was a suicide note. It read: “I don’t want to be a burden for anyone to look after”.
The victim’s wife Thanakorn Lomrat, 54, who owns the condominium, said that her husband was a former policeman. He came to Thailand twenty years ago but his health had deteriorated and he had many illnesses.
Recently he had suffered diabetes that had affected his eyesight and was barely able to walk.
The body was sent for autopsy and the embassy have been informed.

A case for Teakdoor CSI , he commited suicide by shooting himself in the throat , being an ex policeman I don't think he would have shot himself in his throat .

RIP Mr Bacon ... such a sad way to depart this mortal coil.

BTW ... 28 years his junior, I hope that had fun times together.

Good luck to the old boy, his health and life where only going to deteriorate so he cut the misery trail early.

Sounds like he had had enough of failing health and a poor quality of life. I hope when you were young you shined like the sun. RIP

Policeman unfortunately do not Shine like The Sun, their job is shit, they are usually shunned at social events and end up socializing with other Police.

They are only appreciated when some coont needs them, besides that it is a shit way to earn a living.

Many mental issues ensue because of the stress of the job.

Fook that.

Perhaps this might be a trendy start towards things to come..

The poor chap had been resident in thailand for 20 years, married to a thai national, probably supporting her too and yet the thai health system was unable to help him, and at that age insurance would be all but impossible.

The condo looks somewhat low rent and the pictures on the wall point to happier times, it is a shame that he, like so many other expats, unthinkingly burnt his bridges to civilisation and compassionate free healthcare when relocating to thailand.

Maybe that letter where he states he doesnt want to be a burden was an indicator to him going back to Oz..

Shooting himself in the neck is a bit strange

As for his illnesses it only states he had poor eyesight in that op.

What compssionate and free heath care would that be, old people are treated like shit if they don't have the money to go private.

Ex cop on a police pension, better off than most, but not rich by a long shot, would be dumped on the street or some welfare old peoples home and left to die alone.

As to shot in the throat, take that to mean gun under the chin, front of the throat above the adams apple.

Well its certainly not available where you live.

Lets hope you have a solid plan B for when things get difficult.

You certainly dont want to believe all the negativity you read about the nhs in the uk.

They looked after an ageing relative of mine with dementia to a standard that had to be seen to believed, before she died a dignified and peaceful death in a wonderfully staffed hospice.

If you know the ins and outs of the system, and are aware of exactly what you are entitled to, and deal with them in a respectful and civilised way, then they will do whatever they can to help. Be that end of life care, quick gp referrals or choosing your consultant and hospital.

Some areas of the country are certainly better than others, i am fortunate enough to be registered in an area with a particularly good reputation for staffing levels, efficiency and patient satisfaction.

I would not like to rely on thai hospitals for either end of life or terminsl illness care, or being treated for any serious illness.

You may get your scan done in ten minutes, but the quack will then spend the next 2 days on google working out the diagnosis whilst the nurses adjust their make up and update their line and facebook accounts.

Theres only a queue of 4 million:)
