Its well worth a visit. Its just ruined by the clowns for the most part. Avoid Had Rin and you'll be fine!

Had a lovely time. Was there for 6 days and then went off to Samui for about 5 days. Gorgeous weather -- didn't rain too much. Was on one of the north beachs - Ao Thong Nai Pan Noi - not many tourists, although all the bungalow ops like to jack up the prices because it's out in the middle of nowhere. Hopefully these pics will come out okay....

Bungalows right on the beach. Could hear the waves softly crashing at night and at 600 baht a night during peak season, well, I thought that was a pretty good deal. The aircon ones were further inland and twice the price!

This is the very end of the beach, Ao Thon Nai Pan Noi. The sand is very soft down at this end, and virtually no tourists (except for the topless Germans bathing on the rocks - sorry no pics of those.)

Went to Haad Rin one day and the road is just awful. It had rained the previous night.

    More of the beach:

Thought I'd throw in some piccies of Samui just for the hell of it. These were taken on small, secluded beaches between Lamai and Chaweng.

i stayed on the north of the island last winter, its about a 45 min drive in a 4x4.the road is pretty bad.once you get there the beaches are stunning and the beach huts are cheap.nice bars and restaurants, but on the downside theres a whole load of dreadlocks and petouli oil wearers whanging on about how they are travellers and not tourists cos there here for the whole month.

I don't want to generalize but generally they're all really rude.

No, he's right... That 'veneer' you elude to is perceived as rudeness by many...

Perhaps the many ought to try and live with the constant threat of being wiped out and then see if they don't develop a "veneer".

Real disappointed to hear these kinds of comments anywhere, and especially on a Thailand forum.

Open your minds up a little.
