PH trip. Just boarding the plane from Vancouver to Manila. We have no set itinerary or hotels booked. Just winging it. Will spend a couple days in Manila to recover from the flight

I agree with cyrille that 2 days are more than enough to recover from jetlag. You could make it 1 day only if your vacay is short.

If y'all will go to her province, that'll take 1 day from Manila & another for the return trip.

If you want to do both Olongapo & La Union, I think it's doable. Elyu (as called by the millennials) is only 1-2 hrs away from Olongapo. You'll get both the "mature" expats in Olongapo & the younger crowd on LU. And if you want to see the millenials in LU, go there on a weekend bcos they work during weekdays.

If you want hotel reco in Manila, I can give suggestions (depends on your budget).

I still think he should get his ass to baloy beach not everyone's an old fart. Most of my mates that still.live there are 50 to 60 but think that there 25. Personally I would love a wee sojourn to the region.
