^Guy must have been doing well a few years ago, but as far as I know he has ended up selling noodles on the street.

could be a possible front. I had a chinese maid when living in Hong Kong. Cleaned my dirty underpants an all. after a few years I found out she has properties all over HK and was one of those millionares that will hoard their money and stay in their shitty jobs,

Dunno whats going on inside some of their heads but it aint normal I tell you.
This kind of 'dishonesty' is a Thai cultural trait. it should be expected every time you deal with a Thai.

They believe there is nothing wrong with this kind of behaviour, and indeed if they can get away with it, that it was the right thing to do.

To a Thai, someone that doesn't lift a finger yet amasses a vast wealth through less than honest practices is more admired than someone that works hard every day for little reward.
The first guy is clever, while the second is stupid. Honesty and integrity are not that important when it comes to amassing wealth and status.

Different cultures, different values. It's no surprise 99% of Westerners cannot understand the cnuts.
    ^ Excellent post.

I was talking with Peterpan last week, over a few beers, and he put it something like this.

Many Thais derive no greater pleasure than to have gotten over on somebody. They will go to great lengths to weasel around trying to squeeze every lie and halftruth into a deal so they can feel clever. It's far more gratifying than integrity and a honest deal.

    I agree.

Dinging bells, flashing lights, air horns, waving flags!
Sounds like a typical Thai, "I've got loads of money" gimmick.
Barge poles and smelly, rotton things come to mind.

No, they were selling the house because they needed the money. I could probably have been a bit more ruthless and squeezed him on the price and got him down by a large amount, as I'm pretty sure he was desperate.

When land is either bought or sold here it is customery to meet the other party in the land office-check the original chanote to ensure there are no charges registered against the land then and only them the money is handed over and the chanote signed.
Any other way and for sure you will be ripped off.
I always make sure than anyone i deal with in busines here--Thai or farang ---is made well aware of the consequences of trying to fock me over! ( and i never mean solicitors)

It's the perfect angle for her, we get dried beef in a day from being on the spoiler, it is on a bamboo type plate though.
