    So then, Pattaya...

... from the outset let me be very clear about one thing, I've never been to Pattaya. Not so much as passed through it.

However from all that I've heard/read/seen (on here and other places and from other people) is it really the dirty, stinking, cesspit of human effluence and waste, Sodom and Gomorrah of Asia, souless, filthy, catchment for drifting turds and refuse, scum-infested shite-hole that it seems to be?

Yeah, I do harbour some sort of morbid curiosity about the place I have to admit.

Seems like every day I'm hearing about some sort of tragic story coming from the place, gotten to the point where I was thinking it must be hell on earth. But then I remembered Australia so it can't be that bad.

Worse spots in the world than Patters, like BKK for example.

Parts of it are, i don't think anyone is going to dispute that and i've lived here best part of 5 years, but at the same time cross the sukhumvit road and you are in east Pattaya, away from the tourists and a lot nicer and quieter area, yet still only 5-10 minutes away from the madness as and when you want it.

I believe TAT is looking for a new slogan to replace 'Amazing Thailand'. Maybe you should submit this?

It really is a depressingly sad place. It seems like everyone in the whole town is on the game.

I'll have to agree here, Pattaya is one of those places you either love or hate, there is no inbetween.

Imagine being chained to a chair, drugged, and forced to watch endless episodes of The Bold and the Beautiful.
With Sophia Loren and Brigi8tte Bardot.

    Thats Pattaya.

Pattaya is a great place for a single mans holiday as long as you don't take things too seriously.

Overdeveloped, uncharming and the most unfriendly Thais I have ever met anywhere.

Not necessarily worse than some parts of Bangkok and certainly not worse than some other places in the world, Cairo or Khartoum for example. But all in all, the place I have the least desire to go to in Thailand (apart from Klong Prem and Bang Kwang).

As someone has already mentioned, if you cross Sukhumvit Road, it's like being in the country.
The naughty bits is only between the beach and third road (if my memory serves correct).
Used to love Pattaya when I was single, but then, the whole of the Pattaya consisted of what is now Walking Street.
Still like it, but, after a couple of days, it wears a bit thin.

I used to live there, the first three years I was here, we had a house on the road to Siam Country club.
I go there every 4 month (hospital thing) and i go back the same day.
For a first-timer in Thailand it must be heaven, to me it looks more like the gates to hell, it has taken a very bad turn from what it was.

I must admit, I've never really understood why Pattaya attracts the sheer number of tourists that it does.
