Good restaurants that serve veggie dishes?

After turning vegetarian a few months ago I've noticed a lot of decent restaurants lack much variety when it comes to dishes I can eat.

The only one so far to show any intrest in customer happiness is Cafe De's Amis. There are some veggie dishes on their menu but Blu and his chef are always ready to make up a special on the spot for me.

If I go to a Thai restaurant I often end up with just mixed veg and rice.

I know there are a few vegetarian only restaurants but the look of horror on my friends and families faces when I suggest a visit tells me it would end up a table for one.

So, any restaurants you connoisseurs reccommend?
I would post pictures but life's too short.

^I had the great misfortune to be married once upon a time to a very rigid vegetarian. Thus, I know that the base for Worchester Sauce is anchovies ("Can't you hear the innocent little fishies crying?") I also know that if you order soup in a restaurant in Hong Kong and ask the Chinese-only-speaking waiter, "Is there any meat stock in your soup?", they mutter curses upon all your generations to come. I also know that on Thanksgiving, a pineapple adorned with a paper turkey head and tail as a centerpiece is likely to get you reams of shit.

That said, and putting aside the years I suffered with that fucking retarded bitch, most Indian restaurants do good veggie stuff. And your family might buy off on an Indian meal as well.

^Not to mention the incessant whining before EVERY international flight. "Did you remember to pre-order my vegetarian meal?" FFS, stuff a bread roll in your mouth and STFU! Fortunately, during most of those years of living hell, we lived in SWAsia, so she and the Guptas could indulge their bizarre proclivities together.

Except during the vegetarian festival it is very difficult to find a Thai dish one that has not been seasoned with Nam Pla. I got lucky in that the girlfriend never asked me to translate Nam Pla.

Hi Kurgen, I've been vegetarian 35 years and currently live in Thailand. There isn't too much of a problem finding veggie food, but the quality varies a lot. Often I get served a few veggie bits with rice.....more like an appetizer than a meal.
You'll have to enquire and explore your local area. Sometimes I have to go to a food hall and buy the "red bean and coconut milk in a plastic bag" dessert in order to get my daily protein. And I get unsalted almonds from health food shops.
Beware restaurants that stir-fry veggies in pork fat rather than veggie oil.
Try the "happy cow" website that lists restaurants in different locales. Although it's updated regularly, it's best to phone the restaurant first to make sure they still exist !
There are some good ones in BKK, but it seems you're in Pattaya...?

Vegetarian restaurants in Thailand usually post/fly a sign colored yellow with a symbol looking like a 7.

Govinda vegetarian restaurants are great and originally owner operated by Hari Krishna's. they can be found all over the world. I even found one in Lima Peru as well as Paris.

Although I am vegetarian I am not one of those who cannot bear to watch other's indulge in meat eating. I became a vegetarian for health reasons and for meditation practice. Intolerance is simply bigotry. I understand Davis completely.

I decided a while back I needed to lose some weight and as I rarely excersise and enjoy my daily intake of beer I decided to try a veggie diet. 3 or 4 months on and I still haven't got a gym membership and I still drink 10+ bottles of tiger in the evening and I'm down from 94k's to just under 82k's, and still dropping.
I'm not a strict 'keep that oxo cube away from me' type veggie, I've been to a few chinese restaurants when there is literally no choice but to have one or two meat dishes.

    Veggies

There is a vegetarian restaurant on the NW corner of Pattaya Tai and 3rd road.
It sits about 1-2 doors west of the corner next to a costume shop, look for the yellow sign. It says "Aharn Jae" in Thai and means vegetarian.
Never ate there, myself but FYI.

Yes I've seen that one but the wife needs her serving of farmyard so we never seem to get there. Cheers anyway.

What you need to do is find a veggie restaurant that serves really tasty food....then invite your wife there. I did this here in Bangkok, and it worked well. Now she really WANTS to go there in preference to, say, a pizza place, because it serves Thai dishes she's familiar with.
The problem is that a lot of Thai vegetarian dishes in ordinary restaurants are dull and lifeless. They have no idea of how to make tasty veggie food in ordinary restaurants. Thai people have tried this food and naturally think ALL veggie food is like this. It's also often garlic-free, so it's even more insipid.
A proper veggie restaurant will have mock meat dishes which are savoury and tasty. I've taken meat-eaters to good veggie restaurants in Australia and they've been amazed ! It's comical to see their reaction.

I think the OP is in Pattaya.
By coincidence I was in soi 11/1 the other night, in The Dosa King. Overall it was as good as Kazana, if not a little better (though to be fair, it's been a while since I was in Kazana)....except for the (non-dosa) Indian breads. Kazana was better for those.

I agree that Dosa King does certain dishes better, but generally I find the freshness of KK to be high quality.

Their Paneer Bhurji is just spectacular.....

There is a great little indian vege place. It's on South Pattaya Road near the traffic lights with third road.
    Diagonally opposite Tonys gym.
