We drove past this cool looking statue on the way in so we went to check it out. Not sure about the history of this one, been meaning to look it up.

Noticed some dinosaur statues across the grass, looks like they're in the middle of building a dinosaur museum or something. There was a bunch of army guys around with some heavy machinery.
This next one's a footprint...
Walked back across the muddy ground to the statue and hit the road again...
To appease the missus, we stopped at this highly exciting pottery selling area on the highway just out of town. Actually bargains to be had here, we picked up some real nice microwavable dinner plates for 25 THB each, plus some other assorted crap.
Sip baht djaaaaooooo
And with that, we headed for Lampang.
Though I've heard posters on this board raving about Lampang, to me it's just another small congested Thai city. Having said that, I haven't spent much time there and never seen it at night. We just drove around for a little before heading back to the highway.
Another bridge over the mighty Wang...
And with that, we hit the trusty old dual lane highway 11 back to Chiang Mai, about 3pm. Good timing too as we got hit by a massive storm engulfing the whole area just after leaving Lampang. This always brings out the best in Thai driving skills. Only passed two overturned trucks (sorry no pics - too slow) on the way back to Chiang Mai.
And that's all folks. Cheers.
9999 just dug up your post, we have been building a new home behind the Sugar Factory where you had a meal on Main street Ko kha, the Army have landscaped the area with the monument to the King, who won back Siam from the Burmese. Sugar factory is destined to move to Issan, stinking mess when it operates , Lampang is slow but much cheaper than CNX or Bangers and much less Falang! just did a drive to Li, the back way to, hope to post some photos soon MM
Hope to see some pics MM, will have to spot there next time i drive to bangers in a few months.
Next road trip is next month, it's been a while but this is a big one - Chiang Mai to Nong Kai and back again, only this time we will take a different route, take our time and do some site seeing in Northern Thailand / North-western Isaan. Got my eye on some roads around Loei to try.
There was something that took me about Kho Kha. I have slagged Lampang for being dull, but gotta say you have chosen a great spot to live there MM.
Going the back way through Li and follow route 106 through Pasang and Lamphun city and into Chiang Mai - makes the trip a tad longer but far more interesting than the well travelled windy super highway from Lampang to Chiang Mai.
Just read excellent thread and some ideas for our next trip to C Mai always try and do a few small detours.Have you been to Fang?
Yeah I been to Fang a few times, and have hugged the border all the way across to Mae Sai which was interesting. Doi Mae Salong is worth a stop if you're crossing over from Fang.
Great Thread 9999
Before reaching Li, on left there is a village Baan Shivid Mai (New Life), a village where some people with milder Leprosy were relocate to. There were also few sponsored rubberwood plantations some 25 years ago around this village, it should be quite overgrown by now, wondering how much rubber have they got.
If not continuing from Li by the main highway to Thoern, but turn on left in the middle of the town, there is nice scenic road going straight to Kho Kha (ca. 100 km). Just after leaving Li is a lignite mine and later a Queen's project (agriculture) for hill tribe people. Also a simple Wat with forest monks.
Boring? A premature consideration. Once a kingdom of the northern area Lanna. A In two previous centuries a center of teak business run by foreign companies.
There are many ceramics factories around with education and exhibition center
Easy place for shopping for population of the large province, with recently new Central Plaza, HomePro, ThaiWasadu, Global House, Tesco, Big C and many traditional shops.
There 3 flights daily from Bangkok.
Few years ago a very lively night life in the City for the many workers (not only foreign) engaged 30 km behind the City in construction of then the largest power plant in Asia - Mae Moh - with 13 generating units fired by lignite coal from surface mine nearby, the site construction going over 20 years. First 3 units erected in 70th had been already demolished, large coal open pit extended under its previous location.
Lampang is well known for a number of Wats of various styles. The most famous is Wat Lampang Prabat Luang, near to Kho Kha.
Another curiosity are horse carriages - Rod Maa - as the only city in Thailand.
Somewhere in that area is very famous forest market Tung Kwien, well known to travellers to Chiang Mai, with exotic food, plants and insects are sold.
Then further on is the Elephant Center run by Forestry, with elephant school and hospital, two interesting presentations daily of the elephant skill.
