Planning travel for arrival

This might be impacted by the response to the place to rent the motorcycle, but once we arrive in BKK I will be quickly getting on a train to head to Mukdahan. My question is should I take the one going to Nong Khai or Ubon, and once I arrive at one of those is it difficult to find a bus going where I want to go?

I know the question may seem like I am planning too much like a farang but finding info on Isaan transport routes is next to impossible online.

and no, buses are very regular..to anywhere..

Regular bus services operate between Nong Khai to Nakhon Phanom via Sakon Nakhon at the rate of 79 bahts, while air-conditioned buse services are provided hourly from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the rate of 143 baht.From Udon Thani regular bus services are provided at the rate of 128 baht, while air-conditioned bus services are provided at the rate of 211 baht.In addition, bus services between Nakhon Phanom and Mukdahan Provinces are provided on an hourly basis from 5.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m. daily, while air-conditioned buses services between Nakhon Phanom and Khorat Provinces are provided 3 times a day at the rate of 264 baht.

Unless you are set on the train, you will be better off taking a VIP bus to Mukdahan.

But buses are 'orrible..I'd rather sit down for a cup of tea and a chat with granny for 10 hours.

Train is good if you get a sleeper but slower. I used to take the VIP bus from Bangkok to Roiet. Full layback seats so just sleep the whole way.



Leaves around 8:30PM and arrives Roiet around 6AM. Bangkok to Mukdahan will be a couple hours longer.

Anyway not a big deal if train or bus. Nice thing about Isaan nothing is very urgent.

Does a train go directly to Mukdahan these days?

I am merely jotting down the options but tentatively I was thinking a 1st class sleeper with AC from BKK to NongKhai, then a bus the last stretch. I was thinking that for the bed that was mentioned above. But if a train goes straight into Mukdahan I would be thrilled! I know I am asking a bit much, last I knew the route was non existent.

No train line to Muk. Two lines going through Isaan. Bangkok to Korat to start then one north to Udon Thani and one east to Ubon.

Nongkhai much further from Muk than Ubon. Option would be train to Khon Kean then bus to Muk. Distance about same as Ubon to Muk but road better Ubon to Muk.

What time are you arriving in BKK?.

Best to take train to Khon Kaen. There are air/con buses leaving every half hour to Muk from the non/ air bus terminal. [ There are 2 bus terminals in KK. ]

The bus from Ubon is non air, very old & they go looking for passengers, including a long stop in AMNUATCHAROEN.

Arrival at 10:50 AM, but the transportation I don't mind being delayed a bit. I am looking forward to throwing my watch away upon arrival, that should help me fit into Thai punctuality. Honestly I was planning on spending some money at Pantip and likely buying a couple Android phones at MBK, perhaps a few sets of clothes before heading up country. Time isn't really a concern, more or less trying to determine the best routes for the scenery rather than the schedule. I know I said quickly getting on a train, but I didn't mean same day, just no plans to stay in Bangkok for more than 48 hours. Sorry to confuse.

If you want to see scenery there is a day train #75 leaving BKK at 8.20am. Gets to KK about 4.30pm. Still buses going to Muk. Other trains are over night sleepers.
