So any budget rooms around the 400 to 500 baht close to the bars and restaurants guys?
I recently went to Udon and loved it but would like to try Khon Kaen next time. Any help would be most appreciated.
the khon kaen hotel is alright, approx 500 inc breakfast
Have to agree with those who like the lifestyle in KK. It's a great place.
Greetings expats, travelers and other. This my first post.
rgds from
Khon Kaen
I visit KK at least once a year, and always looking forward.
Must admit I was a bit worried I made the wrong decision when I moved to KKC a few years ago.
Now, I am glad I did.
The person who started this thread, kk boy (real name Bobby Lennox), sadly passed away about 5 years ago, at the young age of 47.
Out of the 10 places he mentioned then, only 3 actually still exist, and only one, Pomodoros (Italian Pizzeria) has the original owner.
The old days were fun, and vibrant, but today's scene is not a patch on what it was.
Used to have some great Issan music cafes, including one owned by singer Yodrak, all gone last time I went in 2003.
The general demographic has dramatically changed throughout most provinces.
That is if one finds the only stimulation to pursue are Farang-themed joints, which tend to be rather banal and predictable - reflective of the patrons.
.....otherwise there's a wealth of Thai and Thai-based entertainment and food venues available that might surprise some.
Frankly, these locales are much more enjoyable.
Where in Isaan would even compare to Khon Kaen? I've only been to the three I mentioned and Mukdahan
I'm guessing Udon Thani?
Shame to read about the op and being so young. Just read a couple of his threads,; seemed like a top bloke of Scottish descent who left a couple of older children behind, was an offshore oil worker, liked his golf and fishing and did some good charity work.
R.I.P
Much more. Wife and I often go to a morlum outdoor place just down the road. Great fun had by all.
Young ladies singing their hearts out in hope a few 20 baht notes make there way to the lei around their neck.
Local farm boys getting drunk and taking the piss out of each other. All hoping the 20 baht they hung around the singers neck will pay pussy dividends at closing time.
Usually disappointed cuz 20 baht doesn't get much more than a smile even in Isaan.

Are you in Roi Et Norton? cafes are about gone in Bkk as far as I know. Went to stay at the Kosa Hotek in KK once as Fon Tanasuthorn was booked in to do a concert in KK, she cancelled the concert appearance and did not show up. She was probably having girl friend problems! Was left with silly fools band!

Went into Khon kaen city centre last night, not very exciting.
For someone new to the place, it would probably be ok, but for anyone who has lived here for a while, and see it change, it would probably be a big disappointment.
An old work colleague of mine from Bkk in the 90s moved up there an Aussie Colin R from Melbourne. Often wondered if he stayed. I always had a soft spot for Nonkai. Did some work there in the 90s with Colin. Went there in 2009. "The meeting place" was still there. Had a beer. Remember I met an interesting old Irish guy when visiting a temple there who use to spend his time between Ireland Sri Lanka and Nonkai. Some interesting characters there. Reminiscing again, I am getting old.
By all accounts, KK nightlife is getting even worse......... more bars opened, and fewer customers about !
Never knew much of a nightlife in KK but used to be a healthy Brit community some years back, probably half dead by now and the others groaning under the stresses of having to buy baht with an emerging market currency.
