Nigel, I do agree but I have not had a lot of success finding a good pro. I drove over to the Udon Thani Golf Course near my house and asked about lessons. They just gave me this blank stare and when the boss came out he just told me their hours and how much a round of golf costs.

I will be going back to the states for a few months in July, so I will just take some lessons while I am there. Like you said, once you get the swing down, it is repetition after that. I played golf for awhile starting at the age of 13, but in a few years I had my own car to take out the girls and that was that.

I've got it sussed, just aim 29.73 degrees to the left and belt it clean up the middle of the fairway every time.

Caddie spends most of their time running back to the clubhouse for cold beers. Then I get all confused when I reach the hole that crosses fairways with another hole, call it a day and go to the dark side.

    Great day out

A good roll up of 10 attended for our Friday Ubolrat Friday Competition.
Tony Jones would have surprised himself with 37 points to win the day from Graham Firth 34 and Peter Hellery 33. Jacque Messier and Graham Firth won the only 2 closest to the pin prizes on the par 3 holes.

    Cool Interesting Thread

How many players from your Illustrious club, Have played the 9hole Crown course at Ban Kok samrahn ,south of Mukdaharn, the first all farang course in Thailand, before it closed down?? originally opened in may 1964 by 59 sqn RE, our tented camp at that time had no decent toilets or shower facilities , but we did have a 9hole golf course with the narrowest fairways known to man now sadly it has reverted back to scrub and rice paddies , but the memories of mekhong and lao khao infused play offs linger on!!

I've just returned from a trip down South and spent two nights in Pratchup Kiri Kan.

One day I just drove around checking out the surrounding area. On the way to Ao Manoe bay I passed a sign for a Golf course so went in for a look see.

Jesus, what a blinding location this is. Directly on the beach with a driving range as well.

Any of you guys who live down that way need to check it out.

    Bloody lovely.

I'll throw some pics up when sorted.

2nd April 2015 Ubolrat Friday Competition Results.
Extremely hot conditions yesterday as 9 of our Ubolrat Friday group teed off early. Trevor Edge must have consumed his chocolate Easter eggs early as he was on fire with 40 points to win the day from Graham Firth 36 and Jacques Messier 33 in 2nd and 3rd positions.
Jacques also dead eye dick by winning both the closest to the pin prizes on the par 3 holes.

16th April Medal Round in our Udon Golf Society on Monday in extremely hot conditions. Add to that it was Thai holiday which made for a slow 18 holes playing behind 5 ball Thai groups.
Ian Barrett net 69 took the honors from Rex King 70 net and William Chang 71 net. Graham Firth and Rex King won the two closest to the pin prizes.
Uncertainty at this moment re a tee off time for next Mondays 13th April round as it will be Songkran and the course is expected to be full of large Thai groups.

13th April 2015 Udon Golf Society Results
In spite of it being Songkran our Society Round with an early 7 30am tee off at Sri Thani Forest Golf course was able to complete their Stable ford round relatively easy with minimum holdups from large Thai holiday groups.
Graham Firth with an impressive 39 points took the points from Rex King 37 and Ian Barrett 36.
Anders Lincoln and Rex King won the two closest to the pin prizes on the par 3 holes.

    Udon Thani Golf Society Results

20th April 2015 Udon Golf Society Results
Only 7 members teed off this morning which considering the stifling heat was a great turn up. The temperature soared to 107 degrees ie 42 Celsius and it is a wonder how they all completed the round without anyone becoming very ill.
Hopefully the temperatures will ease with rain forecast for Wednesday and Thursday this week.
Graham Firth 36 points won the day with Gordon Caygill 35points snatching second on countback from Rex King also on 35 points.

Results of 2015 IFGG April Round
Numbers down at this time of the year but we still had 9 members tee off at Dancoon Golf Course in Khon Kaen yesterday in our Stable ford Round IFGG 2 Day comp.
Fortunately no rain fell and although the temperature was mid 30's it was relatively easy going.
Course conditions were average, rough had been cut which was a plus, bunkers OK, fairways due to the heat over the previous weeks were sparse with grass, greens were tough as hole placement made it very difficult due to the speed of the greens unless you encountered slower sanded greens back nine.
The management let themselves down badly by having mainly young male school kids masquerade as Caddies. They were probably collectively the worst group of caddies we have encountered.
Aside from these negatives the good news was that no one died lol.
    Scores: Andy Gatling 37,Peter Hellery 36,Gordon Caygill 32,Terry Aston & Rex King 31,Paul Samme 28,Graham Firth 27,Chuck McCormick 25, Ian Barrett 20.
Closest to the Pin on the Par 3 hole went to Andy Gatling.

Results of 2015 IFGG April 22/23 Comp.
A most successful and enjoyable two days with our IFGG members concluded today with the Stroke Round at Ubolrat Dam. Weather looked poor first up with rain falling but as is the case often in Thailand it improved and the course was in excellent condition when we teed off.
Rex King as expected enjoyed playing stroke and although he got frustrated at times with his form he still came up with 72 net to win the day from Peter Hellery who continued his great form with 74 net.
Gordon Caygill after a disastrous first 3 holes recorded 3 over on his last 10 holes for a total of 76 to finish third,
Gordon also won the Closest to the pin prize on the 12th par 3 to disappoint Paul Samme who looked all over the winner until Gordon's great shot.
Peter Hellery continued on his winning ways to win the overall 2 Days which is a great reward for his perseverance.
The other two awards we all try to avoid ie the Crazy Hat for the lowest daily score went to Denni Price.
Strong competition evolved for the Wooden Spoon for lowest 2 day score but Paul Samme narrowly got to take that home until the May round.

27th April 2015 Udon Golf Society Round Results.
Numbers still down at this time of the year for our regular Monday Society Round as only 7 teed off this morning at Srithani Forest Course.
34 degree with almost 80 % humidity welcomed us but it was far better than recent days when the temperature has been 40 plus.
The course was in ok condition except for the fairways that badly need watering that has not been possible with the dry spell here in Udon.
Putting greens however were true and far easier than what we encountered at Dancoon and Ubolrat last week when the greens where inconsistent.
This was reflected in the low scores recorded by the total group.
Gordon Caygill 39 points won the day with Graham Firth second 37 points and Peter Hellery 36 in third.
Other scores Terry Aston & Rex King 35,William Chang 32.
Gordon Caygill also won the only closest to the pin on the 12th par 3 hole.
Next Monday it is a Thai holiday so we will need to tee off earlier at 7 30am to hopefully avoid the many Thai Groups.

1st May 2015 Friday Udon Golf Ubolrat Results.
Thai Labor Day Holiday commenced today and although the Ubolrat Course was not besieged early with Thai groups it was still very slow going. A 7 and 6 ball group a couple of groups ahead of our 2 x 3 ball groups though resulted in a 5 hour plus round which in the heat was excessive.
Regardless of this it was still an enjoyable round with friendly competition between our 2 3 ball teams resulting in a 1 point win to Team Mc Cormick / Firth / Aston over Team Edge / Samme / Price.
Bragging rights of course were more important that the 100 baht won by the winning team.
    Next week's Schedule.
Monday Srithani Forest Course Udon Golf Medal Round. Please be there at 7 15am for a 7 30am sharp Tee Off.
Wednesday Ubolrat Charity Stable ford Competition with a field of 34 will tee off early.

4th May 2015 Udon Golf Society Medal Round
Very hot conditions once again for our Udon Golf Society regular weekly round.
May Medal Round today with 7 members present for a 7 30am tee off. The recent rain has somewhat improved the course although the greens were quite slow.
Graham Firth blitzed the field with a commendable 71 net score with the closest being Ari Jylha and Rex King with 78 net.
Terry Aston won the closest to the pin prize for the 17th par 3 hole.
Due to the excessive hot conditions our Monday Udon Golf Society Rounds will tee off at 7 30am until further notice,

Udon Charity Golf Event 6th May 2015
A super effort by Trevor Edge and his lovely wife Tai in organizing once again a hugely successful Golf Day at Ubolrat Golf Course yesterday for our Udon Home for Children Charity.
More than 30 Golfers entered the Competition and some who were not able to attend still donated generously.
The course was not in great condition due to non activity over the 5 day holiday weekend and scores overall reflected this.
However this did not detract from the enjoyment of the day and the goal in contributing that all participants could towards a most worthwhile Charity.
With the temperature in the high 30's the beers made available by Trevor and Tai on the 4th Tee box were much appreciated. Some might have not passed a blood test after though as the intake of a few beers certainly lifted their game i.e. Chuck Mc Cormick.
    Winners were;
    1st Brian Proctor KK
    2nd Marcel Joerg Udon
    3rd Toppy Fahey KK
    Closest to the Pin on the par 3 holes were;
    Graham Burke 3rd and 12th
    Marcel Joerg 5th
    Trevor M 14th
Following the Round a Thai buffet was supplied for lunch, and with a few ales having been enjoyed by this stage the Auction commenced.
A huge thanks was afforded by Auctioneer Peter Hellery and Trevor for the generous donations to be auctioned off. Peter as with last year conducted the event with humour and encouragement to extract as many baht as possible from a good natured crowd.
Lots of good natured banter followed until everything was
    gone, credit to the Auctioneer.
Presentations followed for the Days winners and the Raffle prizes.
Following Trevor's calculations it was discovered a new record had been set with 35,300 baht raised from the Auction and the Entrance fees.
Everyone on the day was Winner in contributing to a worthwhile Charity.
Congratulation and thanks to all especially Trevor and Tai Edge, Auctioneer Peter Hellery and Tai's family members who also assisted on the day.

8th May 2015 Udon Golf at Wing 23
As we had played Ubolrat Wednesday in the Charity Event we decided to forgo our regular Friday round there and instead play locally at Wing 23.
The course is in top condition for this time of the year and the general opinion is that it is a better option than Srithani Forest Golf Course.
Except of course that Wing does not have carts for those who struggle to walk 18 holes in the current heat.
At only 350baht for Green and caddy fees plus the Caddy tip it is an inexpensive round of golf.
Only 6 of us rolled up early to tee off at 7 30am and although it was in the high 30's commencing early made it bearable.
Scores- Terry Aston 37.Graham Firth 36,Tony Jones & Per Hansen 31,Peter Hellery 27,William Chang 24.
Closest to the pin on the 15th par 3 went to Tony Jones.
Udon Golf Society Round next Monday 11th at Srithani -be there at 7 15am please for a 7 30am tee off.

11th May 2015 Udon Golf Society Results
High temperature around 38 degrees and equally high humidity was experienced this morning at Srithani Forest Golf Course even though we teed off early at
    7 30am.
Numbers were down no doubt due to the conditions as it really tested those playing. Srithani has a higher humidity level than most Udon courses and this is especially uncomfortable following rain or early morning watering.
Fairways are still sparse with grass but the Greens were almost back to their best condition for ages.
Rex King and Graham Firth in spite of any difficulty with the conditions were very impressive with 39 point rounds. Rex just winning the day with 19 points on the back nine compared to Grahams 15 points.
Closest to the Pin on the 12th par 3 hole went to Terry Aston.
Overall Scores- Rex King, Graham Firth 39,Tony Jones 33,Terry Aston 29, Rudolf Fischer 23,Peter Hellery 19.
For anyone interested a few of us will be playing Wednesday at Wing 23 with a 7 30am tee off.
    Terry Aston
    Organizer.

    May 2015 IFGG Round.
Numbers down due to members overseas or injured but we still had 8 to tee off yesterday morning at Dancoon Golf Course in Khon Kaen.
Very hot which is to be expected at this time of the year in the high 30's.
Course in relatively good condition with flag placement and speedy greens resulting in many 3 putts.
The windy conditions was difficult to handle with draws becoming hooks and fades into slices.
Rex King won the day with 36 points followed by Terry Aston in second with 34 and Peter Hellery in third with 32 points.
Terry Aston won the only closest to the pin on the 17th par 3 hole.
    Overall Scores.
    Rex King 36,Terry Aston 34,Peter Hellery 32,Tony Jones 31,Gordon Caygill 30,Per Hansen 29,Chuck Mc Cormick 26,Denni Price 20

Second day of May IFGG at Ubolrat this morning.Very hot conditions throughout the round.Fairways were ok but greens were extremely difficult to read the speed.A big difference after our round yesterday at Dancoon where the greens were much quicker.
Per Hansen had an excellent round with a net 72 to win the day.Chuck Mc Cormick on count back with a net 79 was second with Denni Price in 3rd spot.
Denni also won the Closest to the pin on the par 3 12th.
Peter Hellery won the Crazy hat with a round he best forget.
Rex King with 68 points won the overall 2 day Comp narrowly from Terry Aston 66 and Per Hansen 65.
Denni Price took home the Wooden Spoon but I doubt that will be repeated this year.

Damn hot and humid this morning at Srithani Forest Golf for our Udon Golf Society weekly round.
The heat, humidity, earlier tee off time and many away overseas or injured seriously impacted on our numbers as only 5 teed off.
Course was in ok condition but will improve further once we get some serious rain.
    Scores- William Chang 39,Terry Aston 37,Tony Jones 30,Rex King 28,Peter Hellery 27.
