The jokes here are the best ever. They beat American humour every day of the week. This thread is almost beyond praise!

When somebody played a practical joke on me by changing the name of my own first thread to "MASTURBATION etc...", their joke worked even better than they could ever have planned. I had several tabs open in Firefox, and the new thread-name just fitted the tab so as to exactly read, "MASTURBATION". I laughed so much I nearly spilled my coffee!

May I take it that my first thread got moved to MKP too? Where, of course, I can't read it yet.

The rest of the forum is really good too. Better written than a travel guide. It deserves far more recognition from Google than the current pagerank. I am definitely a virtual ex-pat from now on, and who knows what the future may bring? I may well bring my body over too sometime!

Many thanks to the chap who sent me here! (Is he likely to reveal his username on this forum?)

Page rank doesn't mean anything at all, serps is all that counts.

Of course you are right. Getting at the top of the front page of a Google search is a very profitable thing. Page rank by itself doesn't bring you nearly as much.

But doesn't page rank help serps? (Please understand that I am not arguing with you; I am a n00b trying to learn.) Suppose there are 100's of import/export agents in Bangkok which have websites with fairly similar content. If an enquirer asks Google for "bangkok import export agents", won't the site with the highest PR get selected for a higher position in the results compared to its similar competitors?

Also, won't PR by itself help a website's marketing efforts? (I am really just guessing here, but I think it is a sensible guess.) Suppose this forum is trying to sell advertising space, and the advertisers think (rightly or wrongly) that PR matters. Won't a high PR persuade them to pay more? And if this forum was trying to swap page links with another site, and the other webmaster thought (rightly or wrongly) that PR mattered a lot, wouldn't he be more willing to make a deal? Also I have read (sorry, I forget where) of a webmaster seriously thinking of buying several links from various PR6 sites for US$150 each. Whether or not the links are actually worth the money, the fact that some people think those links are valuable must mean that anyone owning a high PR site can make some nice extra income.

If anyone can point out whether I am right or wrong in my thoughts, or can offer more advice around the subject, I will be really grateful!

Oooops! And apologies to EssEffBee for posting on his thread without contributing a joke! (I am still hurting a bit from where my previous attempts at jokes went down the wrong way, and people gave me a good kicking on the nasty old red button.)

Google has quietly gotten rid of PageRank in Webmaster Tools. Barry Schwartz at Search Engine Roundtable points to a thread featuring an explanation from Google Webmaster Trends Analyst Susan Moskwa.

"We've been telling people for a long time that they shouldn't focus on PageRank so much; many site owners seem to think it's the most important metric for them to track, which is simply not true," says Moskwa. "We removed it because we felt it was silly to tell people not to think about it, but then to show them the data, implying that they should look at it."

Search marketers are wondering why Google tells people not to focus on PageRank and removes it from Webmaster Tools, but still keeps it in the Google Toolbar. "Back in 2007, Google wanted feedback on removing PageRank from the Toolbar," says Schwartz. "I felt it was a good idea but the idea died out. Google cannot remove PageRank from the Toolbar, it is too much of their branding. No matter how much Matt Cutts and the Google search quality and webmaster trends team want it removed, I cannot see Google's executives allowing it."

Andy Beal of Marketing Pilgrim says the role of PageRank has been reduced to nothing more than a "comfort blanket for SEO Noobs." He adds, "I say this, with a high degree of confidence that most experienced SEOs pour over the data in Google Webmaster Tools, whereas those new to the industry likely let the toolbar be their only guiding light."

He also notes, however, that PageRank data can still be useful. For example, it can be a good indicator of a site's behavior in Google's index. "Any green means 'go.' No green, means there's something to investigate," says Beal.

Despite this usefulness though, Moskwa pretty much closes the case on Google's position on it. In fact, she even points to a FAQ page about crawling, indexing, and ranking, which says that webmasters shouldn't even bother thinking about it. It also says that PageRank is just one of over 200 signals that can affect how your site is crawled, indexed, and ranked.

But it's still "new news" to n00bs like me who didn't know it before.

That's a really brilliant reply. Many thanks for all the effort you took to compile it.

There's another lesson in this for me, and a valuable one too. Having recently been tied to a telephone and PC, I've joined a few forums to try to learn a few things. Most of the contributors to forums who mention page rank seem to think that it does matter a lot, so I naturally assumed they were right. It seems that the few people who "know" can be drowned out on forums by a greater number of people who "think they know."

Can you point me to any good tips for doing SEO on a website?

There is a new website to be launched for a new product to be available in 3 months or so. Money is tight, as usual, and I have made the site myself, which was no problem for a software engineer. I have put together a lot of good and useful content for the new website. Most of it is original content. Even when I have used other people's work as a beginning, I have updated the contents, and edited it so much to correct the spelling, grammar, and general readability, that it will be "original" to search engines.

What more can I do technically to make the website rank well in serps? It would be a pity to write an attractive website with good content that people never find.

If you could point me toward some articles on SEO that you like, then I'll be confident that I'll be reading the best rather than the worst of what is on offer.

(Sorry if I'm being a pest and taking advantage of your good nature!)

Once again, sincere apologies to EssEffBee for not mentioning anything anal on his thread.

Try webmaster-talk.com any questions your interested in wait till chrishirst posts in the thread, they still have a fair selection of idiots who are worth ignoring, but Chris is pretty much on the button for everything web related.

That's excellent advice. There are plenty of posts from Chris on that forum, which will keep me reading a good while.

There's also another bright chap on that forum called ThailandForum. I'm still reading his replies to the "Any one can answer my SEO Interview question?" post. I bet he could have got that job if he'd wanted!

    Many thanks (again!)

And again, sorry to EssEffBee for taking so long to add a joke to his thread. Here it is at last. Policeman: "Stop that. That's a sheep. You're supposed to shear them!" Farmer: "She's my favourite. I'm not shearing her. I'm keeping her all to myself!"

    Is there a misunderstanding here?

It wasn't a matter that I "would rather listen to the idiots."

I started reading the "Any one can answer my SEO Interview question?" thread because chrishurst was the last poster on the thread. chrishurst is not an idiot.

I said I was "still reading his replies" to that thread, by which I was referring to ThailandForum's replies. And I commented that I'd bet that ThailandForum could have got that job if he'd wanted. ThailandForum is not an idiot either.

I might well have been listening to idiots before, but (after your advice) I am trying to concentrate on what more knowledgeable people have written.

Do you know the best way to torment an engineer? Just hint that a real internet whizz kid would know how to do something. It niggled at me until I found out how to do it!

Yeah he's a pretty smart guy, don't tell him I said that though cos he's a northerner and we can't let those monkeys get a high opinion of themselves, but there is a real lot of shite you should just ignore on there, he does his best to sort it out but he can't answer everybodies questions, basically if you read what he says and actually digest it, although he can sometimes be quite vague, your site will do well or your questions will be answered.
